Tropical Dry Forest Succession and the Contribution of Lianas to Wood Area Index (WAI)
The transmission and interception of light through the canopy is an important indicator of forest productivity in tropical forest ecosystems, and the amount of light that eventually reaches the forest floor is influenced by its interactions with leaves, branches, fruits, and flowers among many different canopy elements. While most studies of forest canopy light interception focus on leaf area index (LAI), very few studies have examined wood area index (WAI), which may account for a substantial component of light interception in tropical forests. The influence of lianas on the interception of light and their overall contribution to WAI is a potentially important factor, but it is generally overlooked because of its difficulty to assess. In this paper we evaluate the relative contribution that lianas have to the overall WAI and canopy openness as function of successional stage via a latitudinal comparison of sites across the Americas (Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil). Our results suggest that lianas significantly increase WAI and decreases canopy openness. However, lianas were absent at all of our study sites where canopy openness exceeded 60%. Our data are the first to explicitly document the role of lianas in the estimation of WAI and, overall, they will contribute to better estimations of ecosystem level LAI in tropical environments, where there is a lack of data on WAI
A Review of the Enviro-Net Project
Ecosystems monitoring is essential to properly understand their development
and the effects of events, both climatological and anthropological in nature.
The amount of data used in these assessments is increasing at very high rates.
This is due to increasing availability of sensing systems and the development
of new techniques to analyze sensor data. The Enviro-Net Project encompasses
several of such sensor system deployments across five countries in the
Americas. These deployments use a few different ground-based sensor systems,
installed at different heights monitoring the conditions in tropical dry
forests over long periods of time. This paper presents our experience in
deploying and maintaining these systems, retrieving and pre-processing the
data, and describes the Web portal developed to help with data management,

Effects of conversion of native cerrado vegetation to pasture on soil hydro-physical properties, evapotranspiration and streamflow on the Amazonian agricultural frontier
Understanding the impacts of land-use change on landscape-hydrological dynamics is one of the main challenges in the Northern Brazilian Cerrado biome, where the Amazon agricultural frontier is located. Motivated by the gap in literature assessing these impacts, we characterized the soil hydro-physical properties and quantified surface water fluxes from catchments under contrasting land-use in this region. We used data from field measurements in two headwater micro-catchments with similar physical characteristics and different land use, i.e. cerrado sensu stricto vegetation and pasture for extensive cattle ranching. We determined hydraulic and physical properties of the soils, applied ground-based remote sensing techniques to estimate evapotranspiration, and monitored streamflow from October 2012 to September 2014. Our results show significant differences in soil hydro-physical properties between the catchments, with greater bulk density and smaller total porosity in the pasture catchment. We found that evapotranspiration is smaller in the pasture (639 ± 31% mm yr-1) than in the cerrado catchment (1,004 ± 24% mm yr-1), and that streamflow from the pasture catchment is greater with runoff coefficients of 0.40 for the pasture and 0.27 for the cerrado catchment. Overall, our results confirm that conversion of cerrado vegetation to pasture causes soil hydro-physical properties deterioration, reduction in evapotranspiration reduction, and increased streamflow
Data from: Can Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and hemispherical photographs predict Tropical Dry Forest Succession with liana abundance?
Tropical dry forests (TDFs) are ecosystems with long drought periods, a mean
temperature of 25 °C, a mean annual precipitation that ranges from 900 to
2000 mm, and that possess a high abundance of deciduous species (trees
and lianas). What remains of the original extent of TDFs in the Americas
remains highly fragmented and at different levels of ecological succession.
It is estimated that one of the main fingerprints left by global
environmental and climate change in tropical environments is an increase in
liana coverage. Lianas are non-structural elements of the forest canopy that
eventually kill their host trees. In this paper we evaluate the use of a
terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) in combination with hemispherical
photographs (HPs) to characterize changes in forest structure as a function
of ecological succession and liana abundance. We deployed a TLS and HP
system in 28 plots throughout secondary forests of different ages and with
different levels of liana abundance. Using a canonical correlation
analysis (CCA), we addressed how the VEGNET, a terrestrial laser scanner, and HPs could predict TDF structure.
Likewise, using univariate analyses of correlations, we show how the liana
abundance could affect the prediction of the forest structure. Our results
suggest that TLSs and HPs can predict the differences in the forest structure at
different successional stages but that these differences disappear as liana
abundance increases. Therefore, in well known ecosystems such as the
tropical dry forest of Costa Rica, these biases of prediction could be
considered as structural effects of liana presence. This research
contributes to the understanding of the potential effects of lianas in
secondary dry forests and highlights the role of TLSs combined with HPs in
monitoring structural changes in secondary TDFs
Selection of Reserves for Woodland Caribou Using an Optimization Approach
Habitat protection has been identified as an important strategy for the conservation of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus). However, because of the economic opportunity costs associated with protection it is unlikely that all caribou ranges can be protected in their entirety. We used an optimization approach to identify reserve designs for caribou in Alberta, Canada, across a range of potential protection targets. Our designs minimized costs as well as three demographic risk factors: current industrial footprint, presence of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and climate change. We found that, using optimization, 60% of current caribou range can be protected (including 17% in existing parks) while maintaining access to over 98% of the value of resources on public lands. The trade-off between minimizing cost and minimizing demographic risk factors was minimal because the spatial distributions of cost and risk were similar. The prospects for protection are much reduced if protection is directed towards the herds that are most at risk of near-term extirpation
INVENTORY OF MOSQUITOES (DIPTERA: CULICIDAE) IN CONSERVATION UNITS IN BRAZILIAN TROPICAL DRY FORESTS
In Brazil, most studies of the Culicidae family are concentrated in rainforest regions. As such, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the diversity of Culicidae in regions with different climatic and vegetational characteristics. The aim of this study was to compile an inventory of Culicidae in protected areas of the semi-arid region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in order to better understand the diversity of the family within this region. The study was conducted across four protected areas in the northern region of the state, in tropical dry forest (TDF) fragments. Sampling methods included Shannon trap and CDC light trap, as well as active collection. A total of 11,219 mosquito specimens were collected between August 2008 and July 2012, belonging to 11 genera and 45 species; 15 new records for the state of Minas Gerais were registered, as well as 26 new records for semi-arid regions within the state. The high number of new Culicidae records in this region demonstrates the importance of inventory studies for increasing the knowledge of culicid biodiversity in Minas Gerais, and in particular within semi-arid regions of the state
