    Understanding the Random Displacement Model: From Ground-State Properties to Localization

    We give a detailed survey of results obtained in the most recent half decade which led to a deeper understanding of the random displacement model, a model of a random Schr\"odinger operator which describes the quantum mechanics of an electron in a structurally disordered medium. These results started by identifying configurations which characterize minimal energy, then led to Lifshitz tail bounds on the integrated density of states as well as a Wegner estimate near the spectral minimum, which ultimately resulted in a proof of spectral and dynamical localization at low energy for the multi-dimensional random displacement model.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures, final version, to appear in Proceedings of "Spectral Days 2010", Santiago, Chile, September 20-24, 201

    Measurement of the W-pair Production Cross-section and W Branching Ratios at s\sqrt{s}=205 and 207 GeV

    The cross-section for the process e+e-->W+W- was measured with the data sample collected by DELPHI at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of about 209 pb^-1. The branching ratios of the W decay were also measured; from them the value of |Vcs| was extracted. The results are compared with the most recent calculations in the frame of the Standard Model

    Identification of the bulk pairing symmetry in high-temperature superconductors: Evidence for an extended s-wave with eight line nodes

    we identify the intrinsic bulk pairing symmetry for both electron and hole-doped cuprates from the existing bulk- and nearly bulk-sensitive experimental results such as magnetic penetration depth, Raman scattering, single-particle tunneling, Andreev reflection, nonlinear Meissner effect, neutron scattering, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. These experiments consistently show that the dominant bulk pairing symmetry in hole-doped cuprates is of extended s-wave with eight line nodes, and of anisotropic s-wave in electron-doped cuprates. The proposed pairing symmetries do not contradict some surface- and phase-sensitive experiments which show a predominant d-wave pairing symmetry at the degraded surfaces. We also quantitatively explain the phase-sensitive experiments along the c-axis for both Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+y} and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-y}.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

    CP asymmetry in BϕKSB \to \phi K_S in a general two-Higgs-doublet model with fourth-generation quarks

    We discuss the time-dependent CP asymmetry of decay BϕKSB \to \phi K_S in an extension of the Standard Model with both two Higgs doublets and additional fourth-generation quarks. We show that although the Standard Model with two-Higgs-doublet and the Standard model with fourth generation quarks alone are not likely to largely change the effective sin2β\sin 2 \beta from the decay of BϕKSB \to \phi K_S , the model with both additional Higgs doublet and fourth-generation quarks can easily account for the possible large negative value of sin2β\sin 2 \beta without conflicting with other experimental constraints. In this model, additional large CP violating effects may arise from the flavor changing Yukawa interactions between neutral Higgs bosons and the heavy fourth generation down type quark, which can modify the QCD penguin contributions. With the constraints obtained from bssˉsb \to s \bar{s} s processes such as BXsγB \to X_s \gamma and ΔmBs0\Delta m_{B_s^0}, this model can lead to the effective sin2β\sin 2 \beta to be as large as 0.4- 0.4 in the CP asymmetry of BϕKSB \to \phi K_S.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, references added, to appear in Eur.Phys.J.

    Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2

    A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172 GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95% confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2, depending on the channel.     Disulfide relays and phosphorylative cascades: Partners in redox-mediated signaling pathways

    Modifications of specific amino-acid residues of proteins are fundamental in order to modulate different signaling processes among which the cascade of phosphorylation represents the most effective example. Recently, also, the modification of the redox state of cysteine residues of certain proteins, which is a widespread mechanism in the regulation of protein function, has been proposed to be involved in signaling pathways. Growing evidence shows that some transcription factors could be modulated by both oxidation and phosphorylation. In particular, the pathways regulated by the mitogen activated protein (MAP) kinases represent well-established examples of the cross talk between redox-mediated signaling and phosphorylative cascades. This review will compare the two modes of signal transduction and propose an evolutionary model of a partnership of the two mechanisms in the eukaryotic cell, with redox-mediated signals being more specific and ancestral and phosphorylative signals being more diffuse but predominant in signal propagation. © 2005 Nature Publishing Group All rights reserved

    Evidence for an Excess of Soft Photons in Hadronic Decays of Z^0

    Soft photons inside hadronic jets converted in front of the DELPHI main tracker (TPC) in events of qqbar disintegrations of the Z^0 were studied in the kinematic range 0.2 < E_gamma < 1 GeV and transverse momentum with respect to the closest jet direction p_T < 80 MeV/c. A clear excess of photons in the experimental data as compared to the Monte Carlo predictions is observed. This excess (uncorrected for the photon detection efficiency) is (1.17 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.27) x 10^{-3} gamma/jet in the specified kinematic region, while the expected level of the inner hadronic bremsstrahlung (which is not included in the Monte Carlo) is (0.340 +/- 0.001 +/- 0.038) x 10^{-3} gamma/jet. The ratio of the excess to the predicted bremsstrahlung rate is then (3.4 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.8), which is similar in strength to the anomalous soft photon signal observed in fixed target experiments with hadronic beams.Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures, Accepted by Eur.
