    Results are presented of a vast analysis into Bronchopneumonia (B.P.) conducted in North East Italy as activity of the Regional Section of the Italian Paediatric Society. The survey of the 14 Paediatric Centres in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, produced a total of 536 cases of B.P. in the period January-December 1982. Some significant connections between the several epidemiologic parameters investigated, with special interest in length of hospitalization, are commented. Bed occupancy, short vs. long stays, efficient management are discussed having also in consideration specific possible necessities of some local communities

    H3+ characteristics in the Jupiter atmosphere as observed at limb with Juno/JIRAM

    NASA’s Juno spacecraft has been orbiting Jupiter since August 2016, providing unprecedented insights into the giant planet’s atmosphere. The Jupiter Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) experiment on board Juno has made spectroscopic observations of the trihydrogen cation (H3+) emissions in both northern and southern auroral regions (Dinelli et al. 2017; Adriani et al. 2017; Mura et al. 2017) and at mid-to-low latitudes (this paper). Observations targeting the limb of the planet from 60° North to 60° South latitudes were acquired with JIRAM’s spectrometer in August 2016 and March 2017. We use these observations to characterize, for the first time, the vertical distribution of the H3+ emissions as a function of latitude across Jupiter’s sunlit face dayside. H3+ emission features in the 3-4 μm spectral band were used to retrieve the H3+ volume mixing ratio (VMR) and atmospheric temperatures as a function of altitude. The H3+ density profile has a quasi-symmetric distribution with latitude, decreasing from 5×105 cm-3 at 500 km altitude above the 1-bar level to 2×105 cm-3 at 650 km (column densities of 3.5×1013 cm-2 to 1.4×1013 cm-2, assuming a 700 km column depth; altitudes are referenced to 1-bar pressure level). The H3+ VMR is higher in the Southern hemisphere than in the North with values at 500 km altitude of ~4×10-4 ppmv at 40°N and ~8×10-4 ppmv at 40°S. Retrieved temperatures increase almost monotonically with increasing altitude, hovering around 400 K at 300 km and greater than 900 K at about 700 km.JUNO - PRODE

    Complete nucleotide sequence, expression and chromosomal localization of human mixed-lineage kinase 2

    Protein kinases play pivotal roles in the control of many cellular processes. In a search for protein kinases expressed in human epithelial tumour cells, we discovered two members of a novel protein kinase family [Dorow, D. S., Devereux, L., Dietzsch, E. & de Kretser, T. A. (1993) Eur. J. Biochem. 213, 701-710]. Due to the unique mixture of structural domains within their amino acid sequences, we named the family mixed-lineage kinases (MLK). We initially isolated clones encoding partial cDNAs of MLK1 and 2 from a human colonic cDNA library. The MLK2 cDNA was subsequently used to screen a human brain cDNA library and we have now cloned and sequenced a 3454-bp cDNA encoding the full-length MLK2 protein. The predicted MLK2 polypeptide has 954 amino acids and contains a src homology 3 (SH3) domain, a kinase catalytic domain, a double leucine zipper and basic domain, and a large C-terminal domain. The 22-amino-acid N-terminal region has four glutamic acid residues immediately following the initiator methionine. Beginning at amino acid 23, the 55-amino-acid SH3 domain contains a 5-amino-acid insert in a position corresponding to inserts of 6 and 15 residues in the SH3 domains of n-src and the phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase. Adjacent to the SH3 domain is a kinase catalytic domain with conserved motifs associated with both serine/threonine and tyrosine specificity. Beginning nine residues C-terminal to the catalytic domain, there are two leucine/isoleucine zippers separated by a 13-amino-acid spacer sequence and followed by a stretch of basic residues. The polybasic sequence contains a motif that is similar to nuclear localisation signals from several proteins. The C-terminal domain is composed of 491 amino acids of which 17% are serine or threonine and 16% are proline. This domain also has a biased ratio of basic to acidic amino acids with a calculated pI of 9.38. When used as a probe to examine mRNA expression in human tissues, a MLK2 cDNA hybridised to a species of 3.8 kb that was expressed at highest levels in RNA from brain and skeletal muscle.     Mars Express investigations of Phobos and Deimos

    International audienceThe Mars Express mission was launched in June 2003 and was inserted into orbit around Mars in December 2003. Its main objective is to study the Mars' subsurface, surface, atmosphere and interaction with the solar wind. A secondary objective is to study the martian moons, in particular the largest one Phobos, thanks to a near polar and elliptical orbit which allows the spacecraft to perform close flybys about every five months. The Mars Express data not only consist of high-resolution 3D color images, but also astrometric images, spectra from 0.18 to 20 μm, radar echoes, Doppler signals from gravity experiments, and ion data. A new view of the moons has emerged from this data set, favoring now the idea that they are not captured asteroids, but rather the result of a re-accretion following a major impact on Mars. This unique set of data is available in the ESA Planetary Science Archive (PSA) and mirror imaged in the NASA Planetary Data System (PDS).
