    A Pragmatic Approach to DHT Adoption

    Despite the peer-to-peer community's obvious wish to have its systems adopted, specific mechanisms to facilitate incremental adoption have not yet received the same level of attention as the many other practical concerns associated with these systems. This paper argues that ease of adoption should be elevated to a first-class concern and accordingly presents HOLD, a front-end to existing DHTs that is optimized for incremental adoption. Specifically, HOLD is backwards-compatible: it leverages DNS to provide a key-based routing service to existing Internet hosts without requiring them to install any software. This paper also presents applications that could benefit from HOLD as well as the trade-offs that accompany HOLD. Early implementation experience suggests that HOLD is practical

    The purpose of the research was to find the best arts management techniques for the production of live events to be developed into guidelines to assist performing arts organizations in the creation of their own production strategies. Methodologies included consulting with theatre professionals and attending management seminars and conferences related to the field of live production. A literature review of arts management guides and books was conducted to provide the background needed to develop the strategies. Based on the findings, guidelines were developed to assist performing arts managers in conducting a thorough analysis of their organization, deciding on the scope of a strategy, as well as implementing, evaluating and revising the strategy. The study concluded that performing arts organizations would greatly benefit from the development and implementation of a production strategy that will improve employee performance, client satisfaction, conserve resources, and streamline live events

    Kinetics of catalysis with surface disorder

    We study the effects of generalised surface disorder on the monomer-monomer model of heterogeneous catalysis, where disorder is implemented by allowing different adsorption rates for each lattice site. By mapping the system in the reaction-controlled limit onto a kinetic Ising model, we derive the rate equations for the one and two-spin correlation functions. There is good agreement between these equations and numerical simulations. We then study the inclusion of desorption of monomers from the substrate, first by both species and then by just one, and find exact time-dependent solutions for the one-spin correlation functions.Comment: LaTex, 19 pages, 1 figure included, requires epsf.st

    Heterogeneous Catalysis on a Disordered Surface

    We introduce a simple model of heterogeneous catalysis on a disordered surface which consists of two types of randomly distributed sites with different adsorption rates. Disorder can create a reactive steady state in situations where the same model on a homogeneous surface exhibits trivial kinetics with no steady state. A rich variety of kinetic behaviors occur for the adsorbate concentrations and catalytic reaction rate as a function of model parameters.Comment: 4 pages, gzipped PostScript fil

    Equilibrium Properties of A Monomer-Monomer Catalytic Reaction on A One-Dimensional Chain

    We study the equilibrium properties of a lattice-gas model of an A+B0A + B \to 0 catalytic reaction on a one-dimensional chain in contact with a reservoir for the particles. The particles of species AA and BB are in thermal contact with their vapor phases acting as reservoirs, i.e., they may adsorb onto empty lattice sites and may desorb from the lattice. If adsorbed AA and BB particles appear at neighboring lattice sites they instantaneously react and both desorb. For this model of a catalytic reaction in the adsorption-controlled limit, we derive analytically the expression of the pressure and present exact results for the mean densities of particles and for the compressibilities of the adsorbate as function of the chemical potentials of the two species.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys.     Kinetics of Heterogeneous Single-Species Annihilation

    We investigate the kinetics of diffusion-controlled heterogeneous single-species annihilation, where the diffusivity of each particle may be different. The concentration of the species with the smallest diffusion coefficient has the same time dependence as in homogeneous single-species annihilation, A+A-->0. However, the concentrations of more mobile species decay as power laws in time, but with non-universal exponents that depend on the ratios of the corresponding diffusivities to that of the least mobile species. We determine these exponents both in a mean-field approximation, which should be valid for spatial dimension d>2, and in a phenomenological Smoluchowski theory which is applicable in d<2. Our theoretical predictions compare well with both Monte Carlo simulations and with time series expansions.Comment: TeX, 18 page

    Adsorption of Reactive Particles on a Random Catalytic Chain: An Exact Solution

    We study equilibrium properties of a catalytically-activated annihilation A+A0A + A \to 0 reaction taking place on a one-dimensional chain of length NN (NN \to \infty) in which some segments (placed at random, with mean concentration pp) possess special, catalytic properties. Annihilation reaction takes place, as soon as any two AA particles land onto two vacant sites at the extremities of the catalytic segment, or when any AA particle lands onto a vacant site on a catalytic segment while the site at the other extremity of this segment is already occupied by another AA particle. Non-catalytic segments are inert with respect to reaction and here two adsorbed AA particles harmlessly coexist. For both "annealed" and "quenched" disorder in placement of the catalytic segments, we calculate exactly the disorder-average pressure per site.     Proinsulin Secretion Is a Persistent Feature of Type 1 Diabetes

    OBJECTIVE: Abnormally elevated proinsulin secretion has been reported in type 2 and early type 1 diabetes when significant C-peptide is present. We questioned whether individuals with long-standing type 1 diabetes and low or absent C-peptide secretory capacity retained the ability to make proinsulin. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: C-peptide and proinsulin were measured in fasting and stimulated sera from 319 subjects with long-standing type 1 diabetes (≥3 years) and 12 control subjects without diabetes. We considered three categories of stimulated C-peptide: 1) C-peptide positive, with high stimulated values ≥0.2 nmol/L; 2) C-peptide positive, with low stimulated values ≥0.017 but <0.2 nmol/L; and 3) C-peptide <0.017 nmol/L. Longitudinal samples were analyzed from C-peptide-positive subjects with diabetes after 1, 2, and 4 years. RESULTS: Of individuals with long-standing type 1 diabetes, 95.9% had detectable serum proinsulin (>3.1 pmol/L), while 89.9% of participants with stimulated C-peptide values below the limit of detection (<0.017 nmol/L; n = 99) had measurable proinsulin. Proinsulin levels remained stable over 4 years of follow-up, while C-peptide decreased slowly during longitudinal analysis. Correlations between proinsulin with C-peptide and mixed-meal stimulation of proinsulin were found only in subjects with high stimulated C-peptide values (≥0.2 nmol/L). Specifically, increases in proinsulin with mixed-meal stimulation were present only in the group with high stimulated C-peptide values, with no increases observed among subjects with low or undetectable (<0.017 nmol/L) residual C-peptide. CONCLUSIONS: In individuals with long-duration type 1 diabetes, the ability to secrete proinsulin persists, even in those with undetectable serum C-peptide

    Metabolic improvements following Roux-en-Y surgery assessed by solid meal test in subjects with short duration type 2 diabetes

    BACKGROUND: Glucose homeostasis improves within days following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. The dynamic metabolic response to caloric intake following RYGB has been assessed using liquid mixed meal tolerance tests (MMTT). Few studies have evaluated the glycemic and hormonal response to a solid mixed meal in subjects with diabetes prior to, and within the first month following RYGB. METHODS: Seventeen women with type 2 diabetes of less than 5 years duration participated. Fasting measures of glucose homeostasis, lipids and gut hormones were obtained pre- and post-surgery. MMTT utilizing a solid 4 oz chocolate pudding performed pre-, 2 and 4 weeks post-surgery. Metabolic response to 4 and 2 oz MMTT assessed in five diabetic subjects not undergoing surgery. RESULTS: Significant reductions in fasting glucose and insulin at 3 days, and in fasting betatrophin, triglycerides and total cholesterol at 2 weeks post-surgery. Hepatic insulin clearance was greater at 3 days post-surgery. Subjects exhibited less hunger and greater feelings of fullness and satisfaction during the MMTT while consuming 52.9 ± 6.5% and 51.0 ± 6.5% of the meal at 2 and 4 weeks post-surgery respectively. At 2 weeks post-surgery, glucose and insulin response to MMTT were improved, with greater GLP-1 and PYY secretion. Improved response to solid MMTT not replicated by consumption of smaller pudding volume in diabetic non-surgical subjects. CONCLUSIONS: With a test meal of size and composition representative of the routine diet of post-RYGB subjects, improved glycemic and gut hormone responses occur which cannot be replicated by reducing the size of the MMTT in diabetic subjects not undergoing surgery
