THE POWER OF STRUCTURED DESIGNS AND MIXED MODELS IN A REAL WORLD EXPERIMENT
Justifications usually given for adopting an automated system pertain to a reduction in labor and an improvement in quality control. A manufacturer of a prototype instrument that automated some of the steps for culturing bacteria wanted to compare the automated system to the manual system. The manufacturer wanted to compare the two systems in 1) Total time needed to isolate the target bacteria, 2) Ability to isolate the target bacteria, 3) Amount of interference from background (non-target) bacterial growth, and 1) Extent of cross (sample to sample) contamination.
This paper presents the experimental design used to make these comparisons and how the design helped discover some surprising results about laboratory quality control. The experiment presented illustrates the importance of a good experimental design, the power of current statistical tools, and that a thorough and appropriate analysis of a data set requires side-by-side good detective work by both statistician and client

Towards Sustainable Transport and Mobility
Small island states are one of the most affected areas by sea-level rise, and sustainable transport development is crucial to their transition towards resiliency. However, their special spatial situations, insularity, geographic remoteness, small populations, and small economies resulted in high transport costs and car dependencies. The book moves away from the conventional focus on urban areas in the Global North and tourism. It gives a different perspective on sustainable transport, travelling, and commuting in the Caribbean and Europe. The authors provide research-based insights and show the state-of-the-art and future approaches for policy-makers, academics, and practitioners. Even beyond small island state research, the book offers an innovative outlook

'Concrete freedom' : C.L.R. James on culture and black politics
This article aims to provide a synoptic account of the cultural writings of the West Indian intellectual and activist C.L.R. James. I aim to make a case for greater recognition of his work among cultural sociologists. I go on to show how James’ original, historicising account of cultural forms relates closely to his wider political interventions including, specifically, his ground-breaking discussion of mid-twentieth century black politics in America
Case Report: Molecular characterization of rabies virus transmitted from a dog to a bull in a livestock market in Ghana
On the 24/09/2023, a video of a suspected rabid bull at a livestock market in Ghana was shared on social media and was seen by a local veterinary officer. This led to an on-site investigation by veterinary authorities on the 25/09/2023 which concluded that the bull had been bitten by a three-month old dog 4 days previously. The puppy, which was killed and buried after the bite, was subsequently exhumed, tested and confirmed positive for rabies. The bull was humanely destroyed. Brain tissue from the bull was collected and sent to the Accra Veterinary Laboratory for further analysis. RABV was confirmed by conventional RT-PCR and the full genome of the viruses from both animals were sequenced. The consensus sequences of the genomes belonging to the Africa 2 clade, were identical although sub-consensus variants in a subset of the sequences located in the RNA-dependent-RNA polymerase (L) gene of the bovine virus were observed. The implication of these findings is discussed

Building Capacity for Trauma-Informed Care: Enhancing Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice of Trauma-Informed Care Among Nurses
Exposure to trauma is a global and pervasive phenomenon that is known to have negative consequences on the health, health outcomes, and well-being of individuals and at-risk populations to include Veterans. The implementation of trauma-informed care concepts and principles in the delivery of healthcare services among all staff and across the span of healthcare allows healthcare professionals to realize the impact of trauma on individuals, to recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma, to respond to trauma through improved practices, procedures, and policies; and to prevent re-traumatization while receiving care. The purpose of this evidence-based project is to develop and implement an educational intervention on basic trauma-informed care for nurses to increase their knowledge, attitudes, confidence, and practice providing trauma-informed care to Veterans. This project provides a literature review to support the evidence of the positive outcomes of trauma-informed approach to care which uses the theory of planned change by Kurt Lewin as the theoretical framework. The project used the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service’s (SAMSHA’s) concepts and principles to develop the educational training. A pre and post survey measured the changes in knowledge, attitudes, and practices among nurses at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the mid-southern area of the United States. A total of 27 nurses completed the survey. Nurses’ knowledge increased after the educational training with the one-tailed p-value of 0.014. Confidence levels were statistically significant with the two-tailed p-value of 0.027. There were no significant changes in the nurses’ attitudes and practice. Lack of organizational awareness was the most common identified barrier among nurses
