    Observations on the landing of Odonus niger at Mangalore

    The redtoothed triggerfish (Odonus niger) of the family Balistidae is a reef associated species landed by trawl nets operated along the Karnataka coast. This species forms dense aggregations in inshore waters and were not targeted till recently due to their poor market demand. The triggerfish shoals are intentionally avoided by the trawlers and the incidental catches are either discarded or brought ashore when there is available deck space for storage. Such small quantities landed are auctioned along with the miscellaneous fish groups. Some interest was evinced on this species by the fish meal traders due to limited availability of raw materials during the year 2008

    Babylonia spirata is a commercially important edible gastropod found inhabiting the coastal waters with sandy bottom. Commonly known as whelks, they are landed as by-catch in shrimp trawlers in Kerala and Tamilnadu.There is an emerging fishery for whelks along the Malpe coast (13° 21’ N and 74°42’5” E) with the increase in export demand.     During 1997-'98 seasons, the mussel culture activities were carried out at Mulky estuary with the active participation of local fishermen and the growth rate was studied. Culture work was continued at two places in Mulky estuary during 1998-'99 seasons. The growth rate of mussels in Chitrapu area was higher than that observed in Mulky area. During 1998-'99 seasons, the meat content of the harvested mussel was low as they had spawned before the harvest. The culture works carried out at Mulky estuary reveal that mussel culture can be profitabily done during October-May months in Mulky estuary. The fishermen group can take up the culture activities as a part-time venture as the culture involves minimum labour only during the initial period and thereafter it needs little husbandry work. There is good demand for mussels in monsoon months when supply of marine fish is less due to ban on mechanized fishing. Mussels harvested in May can be processed and marketed for sale during the lean season, for which infrastructural facilities have to be developed. Once the marketing infrastructure is developed mussel culture activities can be taken up by more fishermen group in a profitable manner

    Background & objectives: Incomplete adherence is a major contributor to failure of antiretroviral therapy. Although the available methods to monitor adherence to therapy have proved to be predictive of outcomes, the results are variable. We assessed the feasibility of detecting nevirapine (NVP) in spot urine samples to monitor patient adherence to antiretroviral treatment and to study the urinary excretion of NVP in healthy volunteers after oral administration of a single dose of NVP (200 mg). Methods: Spot urine samples were collected from 50 HIV-infected patients (36 on treatment regimen containing NVP and 14 on drugs other than NVP) and tested for NVP by HPLC in a blinded manner. Sixteen healthy volunteers (9 males and 7 females) were administered a single oral dose of 200 mg NVP and spot urine samples were collected on day ‘0’ before drug administration, and thereafter every 24 h up to 9 days and tested for NVP. Results: All the urine samples collected from patients undergoing treatment with NVP-containing regimens at different time points after drug administration tested positive for NVP. Thirteen out of 14 samples from patients not on NVP yielded a negative result. The drug was detected in the urine of healthy volunteers up to 9 days. The urinary excretion of NVP was prolonged in females than in males. Interpretation & conclusion: In view of its long half-life, NVP gets excreted in urine for a long period of time. Hence, testing spot urine samples for NVP may not be a useful measure to monitor patient adherence to treatment

    Surface resonance of the (2×1) reconstructed lanthanum hexaboride (001)-cleavage plane : a combined STM and DFT study

    We performed a combined study of the (001)-cleavage plane of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) using scanning tunneling microscopy and density-functional theory (DFT). Experimentally, we found a (2×1) reconstructed surface on a local scale. The reconstruction is only short-range ordered and tends to order perpendicularly to step edges. At larger distances from surface steps, the reconstruction evolves to a labyrinthlike pattern. These findings are supported by low-energy electron diffraction experiments. Slab calculations within the framework of DFT show that the atomic structure consists of parallel lanthanum chains on top of boron octahedra. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy shows a prominent spectral feature at −0.6eV. Using DFT, we identify this structure as a surface resonance of the (2×1) reconstructed LaB6 (100) surface which is dominated by boron dangling bond states and lanthanum d states

    A validated high-performance liquid chromatography method for the determination of rifampicin and desacetyl rifampicin in plasma and urine

    Objective: To standardize a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of rifampicin (RMP) and its major metabolite desacetyl rifampicin (DRMP) in plasma and urine. Material and Methods: A simple, specific and sensitive HPLC method was developed for the determination of RMP and DRMP in plasma and urine. Separation in both was achieved by reversephase chromatography on a C18 column with a mobile phase composition of 0.05 M phosphate buffer: acetonitrile (55:45 v/v) at 254 nm. Results: The retention times of DRMP, RMP and Rifapentine (RPN), the internal standard were 2.9, 4.8 and 10.5 min respectively. The assay was linear from 0.25 to 15.0 μg ml-1 for plasma and 2.5 to 80.0 μg ml-1 for urine. Both intra-day and inter-day accuracy and precision data showed good reproducibility. Conclusion: The HPLC method described is sensitive, selective and linear for the wide range of concentrations for RMP and DRMP in plasma and urine. Thus, the method developed is well suited for the pharmacokinetic studies
