    Results from the Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (SuperCDMS) experiment at Soudan

    We report the result of a blinded search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) using the majority of the SuperCDMS Soudan dataset. With an exposure of 1690 kg days, a single candidate event is observed, consistent with expected backgrounds. This analysis (combined with previous Ge results) sets an upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP--nucleon cross section of 1.4×10441.4 \times 10^{-44} (1.0×10441.0 \times 10^{-44}) cm2^2 at 46 GeV/c2c^2. These results set the strongest limits for WIMP--germanium-nucleus interactions for masses >>12 GeV/c2c^2

    Harnessing RNA sequencing for global, unbiased evaluation of two new adjuvants for dendritic-cell immunotherapy

    Effective stimulation of immune cells is crucial for the success of cancer immunotherapies. Current approaches to evaluate the efficiency of stimuli are mainly defined by known flow cytometry-based cell activation or cell maturation markers. This method however does not give a complete overview of the achieved activation state and may leave important side effects unnoticed. Here, we used an unbiased RNA sequencing (RNA-seq)-based approach to compare the capacity of four clinical-grade dendritic cell (DC) activation stimuli used to prepare DC-vaccines composed of various types of DC subsets; the already clinically applied GM-CSF and Frühsommer meningoencephalitis (FSME) prophylactic vaccine and the novel clinical grade adjuvants protamine-RNA complexes (pRNA) and CpG-P. We found that GM-CSF and pRNA had similar effects on their target cells, whereas pRNA and CpG-P induced stronger type I interferon (IFN) expression than FSME. In general, the pathways most affected by all stimuli were related to immune activity and cell migration. GMCSF stimulation, however, also induced a significant increase of genes related to nonsense-mediated decay, indicating a possible deleterious effect of this stimulus. Taken together, the two novel stimuli appear to be promising alternatives. Our study demonstrates how RNA-seq based investigation of changes in a large number of genes and gene groups can be exploited for fast and unbiased, global evaluation of clinicalgrade stimuli, as opposed to the general limited evaluation of a pre-specified set of genes, by which one might miss important biological effects that are detrimental for vaccine efficacy

    Effectiveness Testing of an Inverse Method for Balancing Nonlinear Rotordynamic Systems

    Modern aero-engine structures typically have at least two nested rotors mounted within a flexible casing via squeeze-film damper (SFD) bearings. The inaccessibility of the HP rotor under operational conditions motivates the use of a non-invasive inverse problem procedure for identifying the unbalance. Such an inverse problem requires prior knowledge of the structure and measurements of the vibrations at the casing. Recent work by the authors reported a non-invasive inverse method for the balancing of rotordynamic systems with nonlinear squeeze-film damper (SFD) bearings, which overcomes several limitations of earlier works. However, it was not applied to a common practical configuration wherein the HP rotor is mounted on the casing via just one weak linear connection (retainer spring), with the other connections being highly nonlinear SFDs. The analysis of the present paper considers such a system. It explores the influence of the condition number and how it is affected as the number of sensors and/or measurement speeds is increased. The results show that increasing the number of measurement speeds has a far more significant impact on the conditioning of the problem than increasing the number of sensors. The balancing effectiveness is reasonably good under practical noise level conditions, but significantly lower than obtained for the previously considered simpler configurations

    Gonadal infection: a risk factor for the development of adolescent varicocele

    Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether a relationship between previous gonadal infections and adolescent varicocele occurrence exists.Patients and methods: All adolescents who presented with varicocele at Tanta Urology Department during the period from January 2006 to March 2011 were included in this study. Patients were evaluated for age, clinical presentation, previous history of epididymitis or epididymoorchitis, laterality, and grading of varicocele. Examination of testicular consistency and ultrasound measurement of testicular volume were carried out for all patients to define those with testicular atrophy.Results: Sixty-three boys were included in this study. The mean patients’ age was 15.6 years (range: 10–18, SD; 1.6 years). Twenty-nine (44.4%) boys had signs of testicular atrophy (testes are soft in consistency with ultrasounddetected volume smaller than that normal for age) either unilateral or bilateral. About 28.6% of patients (18 boys) had a history of epididymitis or epididymo-orchitis either associated with mumps or of unknown etiology. Of those patients, six boys had previous history of single attack, 10 boys had two attacks, and two boys had more than two attacks of epididymo-orchitis. A significant positive correlation was seen between the incidence of epididymo-orchitis attacks and the grade of varicocele (rs=0.63, 95% confidence interval: 0.21–0.85, P<0.05). Patients with past history of epididymo-orchitis were significantly more liable (4.1 times) of developing testicular atrophy as compared with those without a history of epididymo-orchitis (95% confidence interval: 1.517–11.097, P<0.05).Conclusion: History of epididymo-orchitis is significantly a potential risk factor for the development of adolescent varicocele with subsequently higher risk for testicular atrophy. We advise routine ultrasonographic examinations in patients with previous history of epididymo-orchitis both for possible early detection of varicocele and to avoid testicular atrophy in this cohort of patients.     New Results from the Search for Low-Mass Weakly Interacting Massive Particles with the CDMS Low Ionization Threshold Experiment

    The CDMS low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) uses cryogenic germanium detectors operated at a relatively high bias voltage to amplify the phonon signal in the search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). Results are presented from the second CDMSlite run with an exposure of 70 kg day, which reached an energy threshold for electron recoils as low as 56 eV. A fiducialization cut reduces backgrounds below those previously reported by CDMSlite.     Background: Waste recycling using biological methods has received great interest from researchers, with a focus on environmental remediation and the promotion of sustainable practices. Aim: The study aimed to identify relevant studies on waste materials, focusing on living organisms like microbes, fungi, or plants Method: Between 2010 and 2023, a systematic review of scholarly literature on biological waste recycling was conducted. The review identified 14 articles, analyzed their data, and categorized them based on waste stream and recycling technology. Result and conclusion: The 14 studies categorized waste into food waste, plastics, e-waste, and industrial residues. Anaerobic digestion was the most researched biological recycling method, followed by composting and bioleaching. Microbiology has advanced biological recycling, and further research could expand its practical applicability
