Self similar Barkhausen noise in magnetic domain wall motion
A model for domain wall motion in ferromagnets is analyzed. Long-range
magnetic dipolar interactions are shown to give rise to self-similar dynamics
when the external magnetic field is increased adiabatically. The power spectrum
of the resultant Barkhausen noise is of the form , where
can be estimated from the critical exponents for interface

Chimpanzee Rights: The Philosophers' Brief
In December 2013, the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP) filed a petition for a common law writ of habeas corpus in the New York State Supreme Court on behalf of Tommy, a chimpanzee living alone in a cage in a shed in rural New York (Barlow, 2017). Under animal welfare laws, Tommy’s owners, the Laverys, were doing nothing illegal by keeping him in those conditions. Nonetheless, the NhRP argued that given the cognitive, social, and emotional capacities of chimpanzees, Tommy’s confinement constituted a profound wrong that demanded remedy by the courts. Soon thereafter, the NhRP filed habeas corpus petitions on behalf of Kiko, another chimpanzee housed alone in Niagara Falls, and Hercules and Leo, two chimpanzees held in
research facilities at Stony Brook University. Thus began the legal struggle to move these chimpanzees from captivity to a sanctuary, an effort that has led the NhRP to argue in multiple courts before multiple judges. The central point of contention has been whether Tommy, Kiko, Hercules, and Leo have legal rights. To date, no judge has been willing to issue a writ of habeas corpus on their behalf. Such a ruling would mean that these chimpanzees have rights that confinement might violate. Instead, the judges have argued that chimpanzees cannot be bearers of legal rights because they are not, and cannot be persons. Dynamics of a ferromagnetic domain wall and the Barkhausen effect
We derive an equation of motion for the the dynamics of a ferromagnetic
domain wall driven by an external magnetic field through a disordered medium
and we study the associated depinning transition. The long-range dipolar
interactions set the upper critical dimension to be , so we suggest that
mean-field exponents describe the Barkhausen effect for three-dimensional soft
ferromagnetic materials. We analyze the scaling of the Barkhausen jumps as a
function of the field driving rate and the intensity of the demagnetizing
field, and find results in quantitative agreement with experiments on

Dynamics of a ferromagnetic domain wall: avalanches, depinning transition and the Barkhausen effect
We study the dynamics of a ferromagnetic domain wall driven by an external
magnetic field through a disordered medium. The avalanche-like motion of the
domain walls between pinned configurations produces a noise known as the
Barkhausen effect. We discuss experimental results on soft ferromagnetic
materials, with reference to the domain structure and the sample geometry, and
report Barkhausen noise measurements on FeCoB amorphous
alloy. We construct an equation of motion for a flexible domain wall, which
displays a depinning transition as the field is increased. The long-range
dipolar interactions are shown to set the upper critical dimension to ,
which implies that mean-field exponents (with possible logarithmic correction)
are expected to describe the Barkhausen effect. We introduce a mean-field
infinite-range model and show that it is equivalent to a previously introduced
single-degree-of-freedom model, known to reproduce several experimental
results. We numerically simulate the equation in , confirming the
theoretical predictions. We compute the avalanche distributions as a function
of the field driving rate and the intensity of the demagnetizing field. The
scaling exponents change linearly with the driving rate, while the cutoff of
the distribution is determined by the demagnetizing field, in remarkable

SerpinB2 regulates stromal remodelling and local invasion in pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer has a devastating prognosis, with an overall 5-year survival rate of ~8%, restricted treatment options and characteristic molecular heterogeneity. SerpinB2 expression, particularly in the stromal compartment, is associated with reduced metastasis and prolonged survival in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and our genomic analysis revealed that SERPINB2 is frequently deleted in PDAC. We show that SerpinB2 is required by stromal cells for normal collagen remodelling in vitro, regulating fibroblast interaction and engagement with collagen in the contracting matrix. In a pancreatic cancer allograft model, co-injection of PDAC cancer cells and SerpinB2(-/-) mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) resulted in increased tumour growth, aberrant remodelling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and increased local invasion from the primary tumour. These tumours also displayed elevated proteolytic activity of the primary biochemical target of SerpinB2-urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA). In a large cohort of patients with resected PDAC, we show that increasing uPA mRNA expression was significantly associated with poorer survival following pancreatectomy. This study establishes a novel role for SerpinB2 in the stromal compartment in PDAC invasion through regulation of stromal remodelling and highlights the SerpinB2/uPA axis for further investigation as a potential therapeutic target in pancreatic cancer
GrassPlot v. 2.00 – first update on the database of multi-scale plant diversity in Palaearctic grasslands
Abstract: GrassPlot is a collaborative vegetation-plot database organised by the Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) and listed in the Global Index of Vegetation-Plot Databases (GIVD ID EU-00-003). Following a previous Long Database Report (Dengler et al. 2018, Phyto- coenologia 48, 331–347), we provide here the first update on content and functionality of GrassPlot. The current version (GrassPlot v. 2.00) contains a total of 190,673 plots of different grain sizes across 28,171 independent plots, with 4,654 nested-plot series including at least four grain sizes. The database has improved its content as well as its functionality, including addition and harmonization of header data (land use, information on nestedness, structure and ecology) and preparation of species composition data. Currently, GrassPlot data are intensively used for broad-scale analyses of different aspects of alpha and beta diversity in grassland ecosystems

Stipa glareosa P. A. Smirn. (sect. Smirnovia Tzvel.) is reported for the first time from the Republic of Buryatia (Russia). Its stations are located at the northern limit of its general distribution range. The taxonomy, distribution and habitat preferences of the species are given, along with its population size at each new locality
Pulse-shaped broadband multiphoton excitation for single-molecule fluorescence detection in the far field
Multiphoton excitation of fluorescence has many potential advantages over resonant (one-photon) excitation, but the method has not found widespread use for ultrasensitive applications. We recently described an approach to the multiphoton excitation of single molecules that uses a pulse shaper to compress and tailor pulses from an ultrafast broadband laser in order to optimise the brightness and signal-to-background ratio following non-linear excitation. Here we provide a detailed description of the setup and illustrate its use and potential by optimising two-photon fluorescence of a common fluorophore, rhodamine 110, at the single-molecule level. We also show that a DNA oligonucleotide labelled with a fluorescent nucleobase analogue, tC, can be detected using two-photon FCS, whereas one-photon excitation causes rapid photobleaching. The ability to improve the signal-to-background ratio and to reduce the incident power required to attain a given brightness can be applied to the multiphoton excitation of any fluorescent species, from small molecules with low multiphoton cross sections to the brightest nanoparticles
Conformationally rigid pyrazoloquinazoline α-amino acids: one- and two-photon induced fluorescence
The synthesis and photophysical properties of a new class of α-amino acid bearing a rigid pyrazoloquinazoline chromophore are described. Confromational constraint of the amino acid side-chains resulted in high emission quantum yields, while the demonstration of two-photon-induced fluorescence via near-IR excitation signifies their potential for sensitive bioimaging applications
Efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a web-based and mobile stress-management intervention for employees: design of a randomized controlled trial
Background: Work-related stress is associated with a variety of mental and emotional problems and can lead to substantial economic costs due to lost productivity, absenteeism or the inability to work. There is a considerable amount of evidence on the effectiveness of traditional face-to-face stress-management interventions for employees; however, they are often costly, time-consuming, and characterized by a high access threshold. Web-based interventions may overcome some of these problems yet the evidence in this field is scarce. This paper describes the protocol for a study that will examine the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a web-based guided stress-management training which is based on problem solving and emotion regulation and aimed at reducing stress in adult employees. Methods. The study will target stressed employees aged 18 and older. A randomized controlled trial (RCT) design will be applied. Based on a power calculation of d=.35 (1-β of 80%, α =.05), 264 participants will be recruited and randomly assigned to either the intervention group or a six-month waitlist control group. Inclusion criteria include an elevated stress level (Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale-10 ≥ 22) and current employment. Exclusion criteria include risk of suicide or previously diagnosed psychosis or dissociative symptoms. The primary outcome will be perceived stress, and secondary outcomes include depression and anxiety. Data will be collected at baseline and seven weeks and six months after randomization. An extended follow up at 12 months is planned for the intervention group. Moreover, a cost-effectiveness analysis will be conducted from a societal perspective and will include both direct and indirect health care costs. Data will be analyzed on an intention-to-treat basis and per protocol. Discussion. The substantial negative consequences of work-related stress emphasize the necessity for effective stress-management trainings. If the proposed internet intervention proves to be (cost-) effective, a preventative, economical stress-management tool will be conceivable.
