Hard X-ray selected giant radio galaxies - I. The X-ray properties and radio connection
We present the first broad-band X-ray study of the nuclei of 14 hard X-ray
selected giant radio galaxies, based both on the literature and on the analysis
of archival X-ray data from NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, Swift and INTEGRAL. The X-ray
properties of the sources are consistent with an accretion-related X-ray
emission, likely originating from an X-ray corona coupled to a radiatively
efficient accretion flow. We find a correlation between the X-ray luminosity
and the radio core luminosity, consistent with that expected for AGNs powered
by efficient accretion. In most sources, the luminosity of the radio lobes and
the estimated jet power are relatively low compared with the nuclear X-ray
emission. This indicates that either the nucleus is more powerful than in the
past, consistent with a restarting of the central engine, or that the giant

An XMM-Newton look at the strongly variable radio-weak BL Lac Fermi J1544-0639
Fermi J1544-0639/ASASSN-17gs/AT2017egv was identified as a gamma-ray/optical
transient on May 15, 2017. Subsequent multiwavelength observations suggest that
this source may belong to the new class of radio-weak BL Lacs. We studied the
X-ray spectral properties and short-term variability of Fermi J1544-0639 to
constrain the X-ray continuum emission mechanism of this peculiar source. We
present the analysis of an XMM-Newton observation, 56 ks in length, performed
on February 21, 2018. The source exhibits strong X-ray variability, both in
flux and spectral shape, on timescales of ~10 ks, with a harder-when-brighter
behaviour typical of BL Lacs. The X-ray spectrum is nicely described by a
variable broken power law, with a break energy of around 2.7 keV consistent
with radiative cooling due to Comptonization of broad-line region photons. We
find evidence for a `soft excess', nicely described by a blackbody with a
temperature of ~0.2 keV, consistent with being produced by bulk Comptonization

Prevalence of type 2 diabetes and impaired fasting glucose in patients affected by rheumatoid arthritis
Although the better management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has significantly improved the long-term outcome of affected patients, a significant proportion of these may develop associated comorbidities including cardiometabolic complications. However, it must be pointed out that a comprehensive cardiometabolic evaluation is still poorly integrated into the management of RA patients, due to a limited awareness of the problem, a lack of appropriate clinical studies, and optimal strategies for cardiovascular (CV) risk reduction in RA. In addition, although several studies investigated the possible association between traditional CV risk factors and RA, conflicting results are still available. On this basis, we planned this cross-sectional study, aimed at investigating the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in RA patients compared with age- and gender- matched control individuals. Furthermore, we analyzed the role of both traditional and RA-related CV risk factors in predicting T2D and IFG. We observed an increased prevalence of T2D in RA patients when compared with age- and gender-matched controls. Regression analyses demonstrated that the presence of high blood pressure (HBP), a longer disease duration, and exposure to corticosteroids (CCS) were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of being classified as T2D. In addition, we observed an increased prevalence of IFG in RA patients when compared with age- and gender-matched controls. Regression analyses demonstrated that a higher body mass index (BMI), the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), higher levels of total cholesterol, the presence of radiographic damage, and higher serum levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of presenting IFG. In this cross-sectional study, we observed an increased prevalence of T2D and IFG in an Italian cohort of RA patients when compared with age- and gender-matched control individuals. Interestingly, both RA-specific features, such as disease duration, CCS exposure, and radiographic damage, and traditional CV risk factors, such as HBP and MetS, were significantly associated with glucose metabolism abnormalities
Anatomy of the AGN in NGC 5548: I. A global model for the broadband spectral energy distribution
An extensive multi-satellite campaign on NGC 5548 has revealed this
archetypal Seyfert-1 galaxy to be in an exceptional state of persistent heavy
absorption. Our observations taken in 2013-2014 with XMM-Newton, Swift, NuSTAR,
INTEGRAL, Chandra, HST and two ground-based observatories have together enabled
us to establish that this unexpected phenomenon is caused by an outflowing
stream of weakly ionised gas (called the obscurer), extending from the vicinity
of the accretion disk to the broad-line region. In this work we present the
details of our campaign and the data obtained by all the observatories. We
determine the spectral energy distribution of NGC 5548 from near-infrared to
hard X-rays by establishing the contribution of various emission and absorption
processes taking place along our line of sight towards the central engine. We
thus uncover the intrinsic emission and produce a broadband continuum model for
both obscured (average summer 2013 data) and unobscured ( 2011) epochs of
NGC 5548. Our results suggest that the intrinsic NIR/optical/UV continuum is a
single Comptonised component with its higher energy tail creating the 'soft
X-ray excess'. This component is compatible with emission from a warm,
optically-thick corona as part of the inner accretion disk. We then investigate
the effects of the continuum on the ionisation balance and thermal stability of
photoionised gas for unobscured and obscured epochs.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 19 pages, 13 figure
Aging in humid granular media
Aging behavior is an important effect in the friction properties of solid
surfaces. In this paper we investigate the temporal evolution of the static
properties of a granular medium by studying the aging over time of the maximum
stability angle of submillimetric glass beads. We report the effect of several
parameters on these aging properties, such as the wear on the beads, the stress
during the resting period, and the humidity content of the atmosphere. Aging
effects in an ethanol atmosphere are also studied. These experimental results

High-energy monitoring of NGC 4593 with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. X-ray spectral analysis
We present results from a joint XMM–Newton/NuSTAR monitoring of the Seyfert 1 NGC 4593, consisting of 5 × 20 ks simultaneous observations spaced by 2 d, performed in 2015 January. The source is variable, both in flux and spectral shape, on time-scales down to a few ks and with a clear softer-when-brighter behaviour. In agreement with past observations, we find the presence of a warm absorber well described by a two-phase ionized outflow. The source exhibits a cold, narrow and constant Fe Kα line at 6.4 keV, and a broad component is also detected. The broad-band (0.3–79 keV) spectrum is well described by a primary power law with Γ ≃ 1.6–1.8 and an exponential cut-off varying from 90^(+40_+(−20) to >700 keV, two distinct reflection components, and a variable soft excess correlated with the primary power law. This campaign shows that probing the variability of Seyfert 1 galaxies on different time-scales is of prime importance to investigate the high-energy emission of active galactic nuclei
A case of Incontinentia Pigmenti associated with congenital absence of portal vein system and nodular regenerative hyperplasia
Congenital absence of portal vein system (CAPVS) is a rare condition in which portal perfusion is bypassed by portosystemic shunt leading to the development of portal hypertension (PH) or porto‐systemic encephalopathy (PSE). Visceral anomalies and liver cancer can be associated with CAPVS1.Thanks to the advances in imaging, the number of CAPVS cases detected has increased. Incontinentia Pigmenti (IP) (OMIM #308300) also represents a rare condition, characterized by skin, teeth, hair, nails, eyes and central nervous system alterations, due to mutations of NEMO/IKBKG gene. We report on the first case of IP associated with CAPVS and nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) of the liver, in a patient with facial dysmorphisms and speech delay. Although rare, this finding may support the role of NEMO in liver homeostasis
Galois theory and commutators
We prove that the relative commutator with respect to a subvariety of a
variety of Omega-groups introduced by the first author can be described in
terms of categorical Galois theory. This extends the known correspondence
between the Froehlich-Lue and the Janelidze-Kelly notions of central extension.
As an example outside the context of Omega-groups we study the reflection of
the category of loops to the category of groups where we obtain an
interpretation of the associator as a relative commutator.Comment: 14 page
Broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the Seyfert 1 galaxy GRS 1734-292
We discuss the broadband X-ray spectrum of GRS 1734-292 obtained from
non-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations, performed in 2009 and
2014, respectively. GRS1734-292 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy, located near the
Galactic plane at . The NuSTAR spectrum ( keV) is dominated by
a primary power-law continuum with and a high-energy
cutoff keV, one of the lowest measured by NuSTAR in a
Seyfert galaxy. Comptonization models show a temperature of the coronal plasma
of keV and an optical depth, assuming a slab
geometry, or a similar temperature and
assuming a spherical geometry. The 2009 XMM-Newton
spectrum is well described by a flatter intrinsic continuum
() and one absorption line due to Fe\textsc{XXV}
K produced by a warm absorber. Both data sets show a modest iron
K emission line at keV and the associated Compton reflection, due
to reprocessing from neutral circumnuclear material
