    Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum 1792) develop a more robust body shape under organic rearing

    Prolonged exposure to captive conditions has led to the development of a rainbow trout ‘farmed’ pheno- type, which is different from that of wild trout. Selec- tion for desirable productive traits in hatcheries has resulted in the development of some morphological traits that are maladaptive in nature. The recent development of organic aquaculture, guided by the well-being of the fish, could potentially produce a new farmed phenotype that would be more adaptive in nature. In this study, rainbow trout reared in intensive and organic farms were compared by means of shape analysis, to detect patterns of shape variation associated with rearing environment. The results of this study highlight a significant effect of the rearing method on rainbow trout shape: organi- cally reared trout showed a higher body profile, in particular in the head and trunk regions, shorter median fins and a deeper caudal peduncle. A combined effect of density and habitat complexity could have contributed to the observed shape differences: in organic rearing systems, lower densi- ties and steady water could increase territoriality and aggressive interactions, promoting body designs more functional in rapid attacks and escapes

    The electromagnetic calorimeter of the AMS-02 experiment

    The electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) of the AMS-02 experiment is a 3-dimensional sampling calorimeter, made of lead and scintillating fibers. The detector allows for a high granularity, with 18 samplings in the longitudinal direction, and 72 sampling in the lateral direction. The ECAL primary goal is to measure the energy of cosmic rays up to few TeV, however, thanks to the fine grained structure, it can also provide the separation of positrons from protons, in the GeV to TeV region. A direct measurement of high energy photons with accurate energy and direction determination can also be provided.Comment: Proceedings of SF2A conference 201

    AMS-02 (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer) is a particle detector designed to operate in space, on the International Space Station (ISS). The launch and subsequent installation on the ISS took place successfully May 16, 2011 with the mission STS-134, second last shuttle mission. The apparatus is fully operational by May 19 2011 and has collected over 13 billions of events in nine months. AMS-02 will collect about 150–320 bilions of events in 10–20 years of operation allowing to achieve an unprecedented sensitivity in the search for new physics in the space

    Direct route from ethanol to pure hydrogen through autothermal reforming in a membrane reactor: Experimental demonstration, reactor modelling and design

    This work reports the integration of thin (∼3–4 μm thick) Pd-based membranes for H2 separation in a fluidized bed catalytic reactor for ethanol auto-thermal reforming. The performance of a fluidized bed membrane reactor has been investigated from an experimental and numerical point of view. The demonstration of the technology has been carried out over 50 h under reactive conditions using 5 thin Pd-based alumina-supported membranes and a 3 wt%Pt-10 wt%Ni catalyst deposited on a mixed CeO2/SiO2 support. The results have confirmed the feasibility of the concept, in particular the capacity to reach a hydrogen recovery factor up to 70%, while the operation at different fluidization regimes, oxygen-to-ethanol and steam-to-ethanol ratios, feed pressures and reactor temperatures have been studied. The most critical part of the system is the sealing of the membranes, where most of the gas leakage was detected. A fluidized bed membrane reactor model for ethanol reforming has been developed and validated with the obtained experimental results. The model has been subsequently used to design a small reactor unit for domestic use, showing that 0.45 m2 membrane area is needed to produce the amount of H2 required for a 5 kWe PEM fuel-cell based micro-CHP system.The presented work is funded within the FluidCELL project as part of the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/ 2007-2013) for the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Technology Initiative under grant agreement nº 621196

    The personal norm of reciprocity

    Reciprocity is here considered as an internalized social norm, and a questionnaire to measure individual differences in the internalized norm of reciprocity is presented. The questionnaire, Personal Norm of Reciprocity (PNR), measures three aspects of reciprocity: positive reciprocity, negative reciprocity, and beliefs in reciprocity. The PNR has been developed and tested in two cultures, British and Italian, for a total of 951 participants. A cross-cultural study provides evidence of good psychometric properties and generalizability of the PNR. Data provide evidence for criterion validity and show that positive and negative reciprocators behave in different ways as a function of the valence (positive or negative) of the other's past behaviour, the type of feasible reaction (reward versus punishment), and the fairness of their reaction.     Project. Oxidative stress (OS) is enhanced in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage to glycids, proteins and nucleic acids are main consequences of OS and are associated to increased cardiovascular risk. Vitamin E and Glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px) represent main antioxidant systems in human cells. Selenium (Se), bound to the active sites of GSH-Px, plays a critical role in this antioxidant defense system. Statins are widely used and extensively investigated in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, notably in high-risk subjects. Several studies suggest that statins show antioxidant effects, protecting low-density lipoproteins from oxidation. Aim of our study was to compare serum Se concentration in ESRD patients on maintenance HD and in homogeneous healthy subjects and to investigate whether chronic assumption of statins may interfere with serum Se concentration in HD patients. Procedure. A total of 103 HD patients and 69 healthy subjects were enrolled; HD patients were then divided into patients who were not treated with statins (group A) and patients who assumed statins since six months at least (group B). Serum Se was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Results. Serum Se was significantly lower in HD patients of group A compared to healthy subjects (81.65±19.66mcg/L Vs. 96.47±15.62mcg/L, p<0.0040). However, in HD patients who assumed statins serum Se was significantly higher than in HD patients who did not. (111.83±18.82mcg/L Vs. 81.65±19.66mcg/L, p<0.0001). Conclusions. our results suggest that in HD patients chronic assumption of statins is related to a higher availability of active antioxidant agents and to reduced oxidative stress

    New constraint on the existence of the mu+-> e+ gamma decay

    The analysis of a combined data set, totaling 3.6 \times 10^14 stopped muons on target, in the search for the lepton flavour violating decay mu^+ -> e^+ gamma is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 \times 10^-13 (90% confidence level). This represents a four times more stringent limit than the previous world best limit set by MEG.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, a version accepted in Phys. Rev. Let

    The MEG detector for μ+e+γ{\mu}+\to e+{\gamma} decay search

    The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay \meg\ by using one of the most intense continuous μ+\mu^+ beams in the world. This paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy, position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data acquisition system are also presented in detail. The paper is completed with a description of the equipment and techniques developed for the calibration in time and energy and the simulation of the whole apparatus.Comment: 59 pages, 90 figure

    A dual process account of creative thinking

    This article explicates the potential role played by type 1 thinking (automatic, fast) and type 2 thinking (effortful, logical) in creative thinking. The relevance of Evans's (2007) models of conflict of dual processes in thinking is discussed with regards to creative thinking. The role played by type 1 thinking and type 2 thinking during the different stages of creativity (problem finding and conceptualization, incubation, illumination, verification and dissemination) is discussed. It is proposed that although both types of thinking are active in creativity, the extent to which they are active and the nature of their contribution to creativity will vary between stages of the creative process. Directions for future research to test this proposal are outlined; differing methodologies and the investigation of different stages of creative thinking are discussed. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
