    The UK-China Sustainable Development Dialogue (SDD) is a partnership between the UK and Chinese Governments to promote collaboration and good practice on sustainable development. It is framed by a 2004 joint Prime Ministerial declaration and was formally established in 2005 by an agreement signed by UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and State Councillor Tang. The SDD was founded on the recognition that, in an interdependent world, international co-operation is needed to ensure that learning is shared and efforts are made collectively towards achieving common goals. This report is the 13th and Final Paper in the SDD (Urban Strand. It draws together the core conclusions from the previous twelve papers and offers recommendations for taking the dialogue forward

    Experimental and finite element analysis of the mouse caudal vertebrae loading model: prediction of cortical and trabecular bone adaptation

    In this study, we attempt to predict cortical and trabecular bone adaptation in the mouse caudal vertebrae loading model using knowledge of bone's local mechanical environment at the onset of loading. In a previous study, we demonstrated appreciable 25.9 and 11% increases in both trabecular and cortical bone volume density, respectively, when subjecting the fifth caudal vertebrae (C5) of C57BL/6 (B6) mice to an acute loading regime (amplitude of 8N, 3000 cycles, 10 Hz, 3 times a week for 4 weeks). We have also established a validated finite element (FE) model of the C5 vertebra using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), which characterizes, in 3D, the micro-mechanical strains present in both cortical and trabecular compartments due to the applied loads. To investigate the relationship between load-induced bone adaptation and mechanical strains in-vivo and in-silico data sets were compared. Using data from the previous cross-sectional study, we divided cortical and trabecular compartments into 15 subregions and determined, for each region, a bone formation parameter ΔBV/BS (a cross-sectional measure of the bone volume added to cortical and trabecular surfaces following the described loading regime). Linear regression was then used to correlate mean regional values of ΔBV/BS with mean values of mechanical strains derived from the FE models which were similarly regionalized. The mechanical parameters investigated were strain energy density (SED), the orthogonal strains (e x , e y , e z ) and the three shear strains (e xy , e yz , e zx ). For cortical regions, regression analysis showed SED to correlate extremely well with ΔBV/BS (R 2 =0.82) and e z (R 2=0.89). Furthermore, SED was found to predict expansion of the cortical shell correlating significantly with the regional percentage increases in cortical tissue volume (R 2 = 0.92), cortical marrow volume (R 2 =0.91) and cortical thickness (R 2 = 0.56). For trabecular regions, FE parameters were found not to correlate with load-induced trabecular bone morphology. These results indicate that load-induced cortical morphology can be predicted from population data, whereas the prediction of trabecular morphology requires subject-specific micro- architectur

    The HI Content of Compact Groups of Galaxies

    The HI content of Hickson Compact Groups in the southern hemisphere is measured using data from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS), and dedicated observations using the narrowband filter on the Multibeam instrument on the Parkes telescope. The expected HI mass of these groups was estimated using the luminosity, diameter and morphological types of the member galaxies, calibrated from published data. Taking careful account of non-detection limits, the results show that the compact group population that has been detected by these observations has an HI content similar to that of galaxies in the reference field sample. The upper limits for the undetected groups lie within the normal range; improvement of these limits will require a large increase in sensitivity.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures.     Analysis of Climate Policy Targets under Uncertainty

    Abstract and PDF report are also available on the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change website (http://globalchange.mit.edu/).Although policymaking in response to the climate change is essentially a challenge of risk management, most studies of the relation of emissions targets to desired climate outcomes are either deterministic or subject to a limited representation of the underlying uncertainties. Monte Carlo simulation, applied to the MIT Integrated Global System Model (an integrated economic and earth system model of intermediate complexity), is used to analyze the uncertain outcomes that flow from a set of century-scale emissions targets developed originally for a study by the U.S. Climate Change Science Program. Results are shown for atmospheric concentrations, radiative forcing, sea ice cover and temperature change, along with estimates of the odds of achieving particular target levels, and for the global costs of the associated mitigation policy. Comparison with other studies of climate targets are presented as evidence of the value, in understanding the climate challenge, of more complete analysis of uncertainties in human emissions and climate system response.This study received support from the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change, which is funded by a consortium of government, industry and foundation sponsors

    Results of the US contribution to the joint US/USSR Bering Sea experiment

    The atmospheric circulation which occurred during the Bering Sea Experiment, 15 February to 10 March 1973, in and around the experiment area is analyzed and related to the macroscale morphology and dynamics of the sea ice cover. The ice cover was very complex in structure, being made up of five ice types, and underwent strong dynamic activity. Synoptic analyses show that an optimum variety of weather situations occurred during the experiment: an initial strong anticyclonic period (6 days), followed by a period of strong cyclonic activity (6 days), followed by weak anticyclonic activity (3 days), and finally a period of weak cyclonic activity (4 days). The data of the mesoscale test areas observed on the four sea ice option flights, and ship weather, and drift data give a detailed description of mesoscale ice dynamics which correlates well with the macroscale view: anticyclonic activity advects the ice southward with strong ice divergence and a regular lead and polynya pattern; cyclonic activity advects the ice northward with ice convergence, or slight divergence, and a random lead and polynya pattern

    The Ultrasensitivity of Living Polymers

    Synthetic and biological living polymers are self-assembling chains whose chain length distributions (CLDs) are dynamic. We show these dynamics are ultrasensitive: even a small perturbation (e.g. temperature jump) non-linearly distorts the CLD, eliminating or massively augmenting short chains. The origin is fast relaxation of mass variables (mean chain length, monomer concentration) which perturbs CLD shape variables before these can relax via slow chain growth rate fluctuations. Viscosity relaxation predictions agree with experiments on the best-studied synthetic system, alpha-methylstyrene.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
