Variational approach for the quantum Zakharov system
The quantum Zakharov system is described in terms of a Lagrangian formalism.
A time-dependent Gaussian trial function approach for the envelope electric
field and the low-frequency part of the density fluctuation leads to a coupled,
nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations. In the semiclassic case,
linear stability analysis of this dynamical system shows a destabilizing r\^ole
played by quantum effects. Arbitrary value of the quantum effects are also
considered, yielding the ultimate destruction of the localized, Gaussian trial
solution. Numerical simulations are shown both for the semiclassic and the full
quantum cases.Comment: 6 figure
Cold air performance of a 12.766-centimeter-tip-diameter axial-flow cooled turbine. 2: Effect of air ejection on turbine performance
An air cooled version of a single-stage, axial-flow turbine was investigated to determine aerodynamic performance with and without air ejection from the stator and rotor blades surfaces to simulate the effect of cooling air discharge. Air ejection rate was varied from 0 to 10 percent of turbine mass flow for both the stator and the rotor. A primary-to-air ejection temperature ratio of about 1 was maintained
Constructions of biangular tight frames and their relationships with equiangular tight frames
We study several interesting examples of Biangular Tight Frames (BTFs) -
basis-like sets of unit vectors admitting exactly two distinct frame angles
(ie, pairwise absolute inner products) - and examine their relationships with
Equiangular Tight Frames (ETFs) - basis-like systems which admit exactly one
frame angle.
We demonstrate a smooth parametrization BTFs, where the corresponding frame
angles transform smoothly with the parameter, which "passes through" an ETF
answers two questions regarding the rigidity of BTFs. We also develop a general
framework of so-called harmonic BTFs and Steiner BTFs - which includes the
equiangular cases, surprisingly, the development of this framework leads to a
connection with the famous open problem(s) regarding the existence of Mersenne
and Fermat primes. Finally, we construct a (chordally) biangular tight set of
subspaces (ie, a tight fusion frame) which "Pl\"ucker embeds" into an ETF.Comment: 19 page
A multistream model for quantum plasmas
The dynamics of a quantum plasma can be described self-consistently by the
nonlinear Schroedinger-Poisson system. Here, we consider a multistream model
representing a statistical mixture of N pure states, each described by a
wavefunction. The one-stream and two-stream cases are investigated. We derive
the dispersion relation for the two-stream instability and show that a new,
purely quantum, branch appears. Numerical simulations of the complete
Schroedinger-Poisson system confirm the linear analysis, and provide further
results in the strongly nonlinear regime. The stationary states of the
Schroedinger-Poisson system are also investigated. These can be viewed as the
quantum mechanical counterpart of the classical Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal modes,
and are described by a set of coupled nonlinear differential equations for the
electrostatic potential and the stream amplitudes.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure
Iron economy in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.
While research on iron nutrition in plants has largely focused on iron-uptake pathways, photosynthetic microbes such as the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii provide excellent experimental systems for understanding iron metabolism at the subcellular level. Several paradigms in iron homeostasis have been established in this alga, including photosystem remodeling in the chloroplast and preferential retention of some pathways and key iron-dependent proteins in response to suboptimal iron supply. This review presents our current understanding of iron homeostasis in Chlamydomonas, with specific attention on characterized responses to changes in iron supply, like iron-deficiency. An overview of frequently used methods for the investigation of iron-responsive gene expression, physiology and metabolism is also provided, including preparation of media, the effect of cell size, cell density and strain choice on quantitative measurements and methods for the determination of metal content and assessing the effect of iron supply on photosynthetic performance
