Modal Logics of Topological Relations
Logical formalisms for reasoning about relations between spatial regions play
a fundamental role in geographical information systems, spatial and constraint
databases, and spatial reasoning in AI. In analogy with Halpern and Shoham's
modal logic of time intervals based on the Allen relations, we introduce a
family of modal logics equipped with eight modal operators that are interpreted
by the Egenhofer-Franzosa (or RCC8) relations between regions in topological
spaces such as the real plane. We investigate the expressive power and
computational complexity of logics obtained in this way. It turns out that our
modal logics have the same expressive power as the two-variable fragment of
first-order logic, but are exponentially less succinct. The complexity ranges
from (undecidable and) recursively enumerable to highly undecidable, where the
recursively enumerable logics are obtained by considering substructures of
structures induced by topological spaces. As our undecidability results also
capture logics based on the real line, they improve upon undecidability results
for interval temporal logics by Halpern and Shoham. We also analyze modal
logics based on the five RCC5 relations, with similar results regarding the
expressive power, but weaker results regarding the complexity
Ghost Busting: PT-Symmetric Interpretation of the Lee Model
The Lee model was introduced in the 1950s as an elementary quantum field
theory in which mass, wave function, and charge renormalization could be
carried out exactly. In early studies of this model it was found that there is
a critical value of g^2, the square of the renormalized coupling constant,
above which g_0^2, the square of the unrenormalized coupling constant, is
negative. Thus, for g^2 larger than this critical value, the Hamiltonian of the
Lee model becomes non-Hermitian. It was also discovered that in this
non-Hermitian regime a new state appears whose norm is negative. This state is
called a ghost state. It has always been assumed that in this ghost regime the
Lee model is an unacceptable quantum theory because unitarity appears to be
violated. However, in this regime while the Hamiltonian is not Hermitian, it
does possess PT symmetry. It has recently been discovered that a non-Hermitian
Hamiltonian having PT symmetry may define a quantum theory that is unitary. The
proof of unitarity requires the construction of a new time-independent operator
called C. In terms of C one can define a new inner product with respect to
which the norms of the states in the Hilbert space are positive. Furthermore,
it has been shown that time evolution in such a theory is unitary. In this
paper the C operator for the Lee model in the ghost regime is constructed
exactly in the V/N-theta sector. It is then shown that the ghost state has a
positive norm and that the Lee model is an acceptable unitary quantum field
theory for all values of g^2.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure
Current conservation in two-dimensional AC-transport
The electric current conservation in a two-dimensional quantum wire under a
time dependent field is investigated. Such a conservation is obtained as the
global density of states contribution to the emittance is balanced by the
contribution due to the internal charge response inside the sample. However
when the global partial density of states is approximately calculated using
scattering matrix only, correction terms are needed to obtain precise current
conservation. We have derived these corrections analytically using a specific
two-dimensional system. We found that when the incident energy is near the
first subband, our result reduces to the one-dimensional result. As
approaches to the -th subband with , the correction term diverges. This
explains the systematic deviation to precise current conservation observed in a

Search for WW and WZ production in lepton plus jets final state at CDF
We present a search for WW and WZ production in final states that contain a charged lepton (electron or muon) and at least two jets, produced in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV ppbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron, using data corresponding to 1.2 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector. Diboson production in this decay channel has yet to be observed at hadron colliders due to the large single W plus jets background. An artificial neural network has been developed to increase signal sensitivity, as compared with an event selection based on conventional cuts. We set a 95% confidence level upper limit of sigma_{WW}* BR(W->lnu,W->jets)+ sigma_{WZ}*BR(W->lnu,Z->jets)We present a search for WW and WZ production in final states that contain a charged lepton (electron or muon) and at least two jets, produced in √s=1.96 TeV pp̅ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron, using data corresponding to 1.2 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector. On-line case discussion assessment in Ultrasound: The effect on student centred and inter-professional learning
In 2009 an asynchronous on-line case discussion assessment was introduced, to replace an existing traditional case-study assessment, within the Medical Ultrasound Programmes at City University London, to help extend collaborative, interprofessional student-led learning skills. Two clinical modules were used to develop the on-line learning method with associated assessments. Students selected and led a clinical case from their department, uploaded anonymised images and case details with questions, to encourage interaction from other colleagues. Thirty students participated in the on-line case discussions. The assessment was evaluated via informal feedback, end of module feedback and an on-line questionnaire. Some students completed two modules, using the on-line discussion, others were involved in only one module, of which 21 out of 26 students completed end of module feedback for the 1st module and 18 out of 20 students completed feedback from the 2nd module. Twelve students out of 30 completed the on-line questionnaire. Feedback suggested that the on-line case discussions were a good learning tool, providing a wide range of cases for students to participate in or read and learn from each other. All students found the cases interesting, engaging and useful, but time consuming. Despite the small numbers involved, useful feedback was provided to assist further development of the assessment, particularly in relation to the number of cases being assessed and length of availability. On-line case discussions are an innovative, engaging method to encourage self directed, collaborative learning which could be utilised in the health care setting to share interesting cases, promote inter-professional and self-directed learning
Callers’ attitudes and experiences of UK breastfeeding helpline support
Background: Breastfeeding peer support, is considered to be a key intervention for increasing breastfeeding duration rates. Whilst a number of national organisations provide telephone based breastfeeding peer support, to date there have been no published evaluations into callers’ experiences and attitudes of this support. In this study we report on the descriptive and qualitative insights provided by 908 callers as part of an evaluation of UK-based breastfeeding helpline(s).
Methods: A structured telephone interview, incorporating Likert scale responses and open-ended questions was undertaken with 908 callers over May to August, 2011 to explore callers’ experiences of the help and support received via the breastfeeding helpline(s).
Results: Overall satisfaction with the helpline was high, with the vast majority of callers’ recalling positive experiences of the help and support received. Thematic analysis was undertaken on all qualitative and descriptive data recorded during the evaluation, contextualised within the main areas addressed within the interview schedule in terms of ‘contact with the helplines’; ‘experiences of the helpline service’, ‘perceived effectiveness of support provision’ and ‘impact on caller wellbeing’.
Conclusion: Callers valued the opportunity for accessible, targeted, non-judgmental and convenient support. Whilst the telephone support did not necessarily influence women’s breastfeeding decisions, the support they received left them feeling reassured, confident and more determined to continue breastfeeding. We recommend extending the helpline service to ensure support can be accessed when needed, and ongoing training and support for volunteers. Further advertising and promotion of the service within wider demographic groups is warranted
Photometric redshifts for the Kilo-Degree Survey. Machine-learning analysis with artificial neural networks
We present a machine-learning photometric redshift analysis of the
Kilo-Degree Survey Data Release 3, using two neural-network based techniques:
ANNz2 and MLPQNA. Despite limited coverage of spectroscopic training sets,
these ML codes provide photo-zs of quality comparable to, if not better than,
those from the BPZ code, at least up to zphot<0.9 and r<23.5. At the bright end
of r<20, where very complete spectroscopic data overlapping with KiDS are
available, the performance of the ML photo-zs clearly surpasses that of BPZ,
currently the primary photo-z method for KiDS.
Using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey as
calibration, we furthermore study how photo-zs improve for bright sources when
photometric parameters additional to magnitudes are included in the photo-z
derivation, as well as when VIKING and WISE infrared bands are added. While the
fiducial four-band ugri setup gives a photo-z bias and scatter
at mean z = 0.23, combining magnitudes, colours, and galaxy
sizes reduces the scatter by ~7% and the bias by an order of magnitude. Once
the ugri and IR magnitudes are joined into 12-band photometry spanning up to 12
, the scatter decreases by more than 10% over the fiducial case. Finally,
using the 12 bands together with optical colours and linear sizes gives and .
This paper also serves as a reference for two public photo-z catalogues
accompanying KiDS DR3, both obtained using the ANNz2 code. The first one, of
general purpose, includes all the 39 million KiDS sources with four-band ugri
measurements in DR3. The second dataset, optimized for low-redshift studies
such as galaxy-galaxy lensing, is limited to r<20, and provides photo-zs of
much better quality than in the full-depth case thanks to incorporating optical
magnitudes, colours, and sizes in the GAMA-calibrated photo-z derivation.Comment: A&A, in press. Data available from the KiDS website

Comparison and Implementation of a Rigid and a Flexible Multibody Planetary Gearbox Model
We propose algorithms for developing (1) a rigid (constrained) and (2) a flexible planetary gearbox model. The two methods are compared against each other and advantages/disadvantages of each method are discussed. The rigid model (1) has gear tooth reaction forces expressed by Lagrange multipliers. The flexible approach (2) is being compared with the gear tooth forces from the rigid approach, first without damping and second the influence of damping is examined. Variable stiffness as a function of base circle arc length is implemented in the flexible approach such that it handles the realistic switch between one and two gear teeth in mesh. The final results are from modelling the planetary gearbox in a 500 kW wind turbine which we also described in Jørgensen et.al (2013)
Relationship between spatial proximity and travel-to-work distance : the effect of the compact city
In this paper, an assessment is made of the relationship between selected aspects of spatial proximity (density, diversity, minimum commuting distance, jobs-housing balance and job accessibility) and reported commuting distances in Flanders (Belgium). Results show that correlations may depend on the considered trip end. For example, a high residential density, a high degree of spatial diversity and a high level of job accessibility are all associated with a short commute by residents, while a high job density is associated with a long commute by employees. A jobs-housing balance close to one is associated with a short commute, both by residents and by employees. In general, it appears that the alleged sustainability benefits of the compact city model are still valid in a context of continuously expanding commuting trip lengths
