Logic Program Synthesis via Proof Planning
We propose a novel approach to automating the synthesis of logic programs: Logic programs are synthesized as a by-product of the planning of a verification proof. The approach is a two-level one: At the object level, we prove program verification conjectures in a sorted, first-order theory. The conjectures are of the form . At the meta-level, we plan the object-level verification with an unspecified program definition. The definition is represented with a (second-order) meta-level variable, which becomes instantiated in the course of the planning. This technique is an application of the Clam proof planning system. Clam is currently powerful enough to plan verification proofs for given programs. We show that, if Clam's use of middle-out reasoning is extended, it will also be able to synthesize programs
Calf health from birth to weaning. II. Management of diarrhoea in pre-weaned calves
Calfhood diseases have a major impact on the economic viability of cattle operations. The second of this three part review series considers the management of diarrhoeic diseases in pre-weaned calves. In neonatal calf diarrhoea, oral rehydration therapy is the single most important therapeutic measure to be carried out by the farmer and is usually successful if instigated immediately after diarrhoea has developed. Continued feeding of milk or milk replacer to diarrhoeic calves is important, to prevent malnourishment and weight loss in affected calves. Indiscriminative antibiotic treatment of uncomplicated diarrhoea is discouraged, whereas systemically ill calves can benefit from systemic antibiotic treatment for the prevention of septicaemia or concurrent diseases. Ancillary treatments and specific preventive measures are discussed. Eimeriosis has a high economic impact on the farming industries due to direct cost of treatment and calf losses, but especially due to decreased performance of clinically as well as sub-clinically affected animals. Emphasis lies on prophylactic or metaphylactic treatment, since the degree of damage to the intestinal mucosa once diarrhoea has developed, makes therapeutic intervention unrewarding
Exploiting Fast-Variables to Understand Population Dynamics and Evolution
We describe a continuous-time modelling framework for biological population
dynamics that accounts for demographic noise. In the spirit of the methodology
used by statistical physicists, transitions between the states of the system
are caused by individual events while the dynamics are described in terms of
the time-evolution of a probability density function. In general, the
application of the diffusion approximation still leaves a description that is
quite complex. However, in many biological applications one or more of the
processes happen slowly relative to the system's other processes, and the
dynamics can be approximated as occurring within a slow low-dimensional
subspace. We review these time-scale separation arguments and analyse the more
simple stochastic dynamics that result in a number of cases. We stress that it
is important to retain the demographic noise derived in this way, and emphasise
this point by showing that it can alter the direction of selection compared to
the prediction made from an analysis of the corresponding deterministic model.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figure
Suggested Improvements for the Allergenicity Assessment of Genetically Modified Plants Used in Foods
Genetically modified (GM) plants are increasingly used for food production and industrial applications. As the global population has surpassed 7 billion and per capita consumption rises, food production is challenged by loss of arable land, changing weather patterns, and evolving plant pests and disease. Previous gains in quantity and quality relied on natural or artificial breeding, random mutagenesis, increased pesticide and fertilizer use, and improved farming techniques, all without a formal safety evaluation. However, the direct introduction of novel genes raised questions regarding safety that are being addressed by an evaluation process that considers potential increases in the allergenicity, toxicity, and nutrient availability of foods derived from the GM plants. Opinions vary regarding the adequacy of the assessment, but there is no documented proof of an adverse effect resulting from foods produced from GM plants. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) are swarming, oceanic crustaceans, up to two inches long, and best known as prey for whales and penguins – but they have another important role. With their large size, high biomass and daily vertical migrations they transport and transform essential nutrients, stimulate primary productivity and influence the carbon sink. Antarctic krill are also fished by the Southern Ocean’s largest fishery. Yet how krill fishing impacts nutrient fertilisation and the carbon sink in the Southern Ocean is poorly understood. The extent to which people ascribe mind to others has been shown to predict the extent to which human rights are conferred. Therefore, in the context of disorders of consciousness (DOC), mind ascription can influence end of life decisions. A previous US-American study indicated that participants ascribed even less mind to patients with unresponsive-wakefulness-syndrome (UWS) than to the dead. Results were explained in terms of implicit dualism and religious beliefs, as highly religious people ascribed least mind to UWS. Here, we addresses mind ascription to UWS patients in Germany.
Methods
We investigate the perception of UWS patients in a large German sample (N = 910) and compare the results to the previous US data, addressing possible cultural differences. We further assess effects of medical expertise, age, gender, socio-economic status and subjective knowledge about UWS in the German sample.
Results
Unlike the US sample, German participants did not perceive UWS patients as “more dead than dead”, ascribing either equal (on 3 of 5 items) or more (on 2 items) mental abilities to UWS patients than to the dead. Likewise, an effect of implicit dualism was not replicated and German medically trained participants ascribed more capabilities to UWS patients than did a non-medical sample. Within the German sample, age, gender, religiosity and socio-economic status explained about 15% of the variability of mind ascription. Age and religiosity were individually significant predictors, younger and more religious people ascribing more mind. Gender had no effect.
Conclusion
Results are consistent with cross-cultural differences in the perception of UWS between Germany and the USA, Germans ascribing more mind to UWS patients. The German sample ascribed as much or more but not less mind to a UWS patient than to a deceased, although within group variance was large, calling for further research. Mind ascription is vital, because, in times of declining resources for healthcare systems, and an increasing legalization of euthanasia, public opinion will influence UWS patients’ rights and whether ‘the right to die’ will be the only right conceded to them

Role of macronutrients in cotton production
Sound nutrition plays a key role in enhancing cotton yield. As cotton undergoes vegetative and reproductive growth at the same time, its nutritional requirements are dissimilar, compared to other field crops. Cotton is grown as an annual crop with an indeterminate growth pattern. The vegetative branching provides a potential fruiting place except under abiotic and biotic stresses. Moreover, cotton has a deep root system with low density of roots in the surface layer of soils where availability of nutrients is high. The rooting system makes cotton crop more dependent on the subsoil for nutrition. A continuous supply of nutrients is required to sustain morphogenesis. The rate of both nutrients absorption and dry matter production increases progressively during the seedling, vegetative, and fruiting periods and peaks near the end of the bloom period. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are required in large quantities and are limited in many soils. The deficiencies of macro-and micronutrients decrease plant growth and development, and consequently seed cotton yield is reduced. The deficiency of phosphorous (P), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), boron (B), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) affects fruit production in cotton than vegetative growth, while the deficiencies of nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), molybdenum (Mo), and manganese (Mn) affect equally vegetative and reproductive growth of cotton.
