Large area Si low-temperature light detectors with Neganov-Luke effect
Next generation calorimetric experiments for the search of rare events rely
on the detection of tiny amounts of light (of the order of 20 optical photons)
to discriminate and reduce background sources and improve sensitivity.
Calorimetric detectors are the simplest solution for photon detection at
cryogenic (mK) temperatures. The development of silicon based light detectors
with enhanced performance thanks to the use of the Neganov-Luke effect is
described. The aim of this research line is the production of high performance
detectors with industrial-grade reproducibility and reliability.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
First bolometric measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay of Mo with a ZnMoO crystals array
The large statistics collected during the operation of a ZnMoO array, for
a total exposure of 1.3 kg day of Mo, allowed the first
bolometric observation of the two neutrino double beta decay of Mo. The
observed spectrum of each crystal was reconstructed taking into account the
different background contributions due to environmental radioactivity and
internal contamination. The analysis of coincidences between the crystals
allowed the assignment of constraints to the intensity of the different
background sources, resulting in a reconstruction of the measured spectrum down
to an energy of 300 keV. The half-life extracted from the data is

Antagonism of the prokineticin system prevents and reverses allodynia and inflammation in a mouse model of diabetes
Neuropathic pain is a severe diabetes complication and its treatment is not satisfactory. It is associated with neuroinflammation-related events that participate in pain generation and chronicization. Prokineticins are a new family of chemokines that has emerged as critical players in immune system, inflammation and pain. We investigated the role of prokineticins and their receptors as modulators of neuropathic pain and inflammatory responses in experimental diabetes. In streptozotocin-induced-diabetes in mice, the time course expression of prokineticin and its receptors was evaluated in spinal cord and sciatic nerves, and correlated with mechanical allodynia. Spinal cord and sciatic nerve pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines were measured as protein and mRNA, and spinal cord GluR subunits expression studied. The effect of preventive and therapeutic treatment with the prokineticin receptor antagonist PC1 on behavioural and biochemical parameters was evaluated. Peripheral immune activation was assessed measuring macrophage and T-helper cytokine production. An up-regulation of the Prokineticin system was present in spinal cord and nerves of diabetic mice, and correlated with allodynia. Therapeutic PC1 reversed allodynia while preventive treatment blocked its development. PC1 normalized prokineticin levels and prevented the up-regulation of GluN2B subunits in the spinal cord. The antagonist restored the pro-/anti-inflammatory cytokine balance altered in spinal cord and nerves and also reduced peripheral immune system activation in diabetic mice, decreasing macrophage proinflammatory cytokines and the T-helper 1 phenotype. The prokineticin system contributes to altered sensitivity in diabetic neuropathy and its inhibition blocked both allodynia and inflammatory events underlying disease
Searches for axioelectric effect of solar axions with BGO-scintillator and BGO-bolometer detectors
A search for axioelectric absorption of 5.5 MeV solar axions produced in the
reaction has been
performed with a BGO detectors. A model-independent limit on the product of
axion-nucleon and axion-electron coupling constants has
been obtained: for 90\% C.L..Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Proceedings of the 10th Patras Workshop on

The Two-Phase Flow Separator Experiment Breadboard Model: Reduced Gravity Aircraft Results
Life support systems in space depend on the ability to effectively separate gas from liquid. Passive cyclonic phase separators use the centripetal acceleration of a rotating gas-liquid mixture to carry out phase separation. The gas migrates to the center, while gas-free liquid may be withdrawn from one of the end plates. We have designed, constructed and tested a breadboard that accommodates the test sections of two independent principal investigators and satisfies their respective requirements, including flow rates, pressure and video diagnostics. The breadboard was flown in the NASA low-gravity airplane in order to test the system performance and design under reduced gravity conditions
Effects of Varying Gravity Levels on fNIRS Headgear Performance and Signal Recovery
This paper reviews the effects of varying gravitational levels on functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) headgear. The fNIRS systems quantify neural activations in the cortex by measuring hemoglobin concentration changes via optical intensity. Such activation measurement allows for the detection of cognitive state, which can be important for emotional stability, human performance and vigilance optimization, and the detection of hazardous operator state. The technique depends on coupling between the fNIRS probe and users skin. Such coupling may be highly susceptible to motion if probe-containing headgear designs are not adequately tested. The lack of reliable and self-applicable headgear robust to the influence of motion artifact currently inhibits its operational use in aerospace environments. Both NASAs Aviation Safety and Human Research Programs are interested in this technology as a method of monitoring cognitive state of pilots and crew
Search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay of Te with CUORE-0
We report the results of a search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in a
9.8~kgyr exposure of Te using a bolometric detector array,
CUORE-0. The characteristic detector energy resolution and background level in
the region of interest are FWHM and ~counts/(keVkgyr), respectively. The
median 90%~C.L. lower-limit sensitivity of the experiment is and surpasses the sensitivity of previous searches. We find
no evidence for neutrinoless double-beta decay of Te and place a
Bayesian lower bound on the decay half-life, ~ at 90%~C.L. Combining CUORE-0 data with the 19.75~kgyr
exposure of Te from the Cuoricino experiment we obtain at 90%~C.L.~(Bayesian), the most stringent
limit to date on this half-life. Using a range of nuclear matrix element
estimates we interpret this as a limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass,

First array of enriched ZnSe bolometers to search for double beta decay
The R&D activity performed during the last years proved the potential of ZnSe
scintillating bolometers to the search for neutrino-less double beta decay,
motivating the realization of the first large-mass experiment based on this
technology: CUPID-0. The isotopic enrichment in Se, the ZnSe
crystals growth, as well as the light detectors production have been
accomplished, and the experiment is now in construction at Laboratori Nazionali
del Gran Sasso (Italy). In this paper we present the results obtained testing
the first three ZnSe crystals operated as scintillating bolometers, and
we prove that their performance in terms of energy resolution, background
rejection capability and intrinsic radio-purity complies with the requirements
of CUPID-0
