Improving the reliability of network metrics in structural brain networks by integrating different network weighting strategies into a single graph
Structural brain networks estimated from diffusion MRI (dMRI) via tractography have been widely studied in healthy controls and in patients with neurological and psychiatric diseases. However, few studies have addressed the reliability of derived network metrics both node-specific and network-wide. Different network weighting strategies (NWS) can be adopted to weight the strength of connection between two nodes yielding structural brain networks that are almost full-weighted. Here, we scanned 5 healthy participants 5 times each, using a diffusion-weighted MRI protocol and computed edges between 90 regions of interest (ROIs) from the AAL template. The edges were weighted according to nine different methods. We propose a linear combination of these nine NWS into a single graph using an appropriate diffusion distance metric. We refer to the resulting weighted graph as an integrated weighted structural brain network (ISWBN). Additionally, we consider a topological filtering scheme that maximizes the information flow in the brain network under the constraint of the overall cost of the surviving connections. We compared each of the nine NWS and the ISWBN based on the improvement of : a) intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) of well-known network metrics, both node-wise and per network level; and b) the recognition accuracy of each subject over the rest of the cohort, as an attempt to access the uniqueness of the structural brain network for each subject; after first applying our proposed topological filtering scheme. Based on a threshold that the network-level ICC should be > 0.90, our findings revealed six out of nine NWS lead to unreliable results at the network-level, while all nine NWS were unreliable at the node-level. In comparison, our proposed ISWBN performed as well as the best-performing individual NWS at the network-level, and the ICC was higher compared to all individual NWS at the node-level. Importantly, both network- and node-wise ICCs of network metrics derived from the topologically filtered ISBWN(ISWBNTF), were further improved compared to non-filtered ISWBN. Finally, in the recognition accuracy tests, we assigned each single ISWBNTF to the correct subject. Overall, these findings suggest that the proposed methodology results in improved characterisation of genuine between-subject differences in connectivit

The La Silla Schmidt Southern Survey
We present the La Silla Schmidt Southern Survey (LS4), a new wide-field,
time-domain survey to be conducted with the 1 m ESO Schmidt telescope. The 268
megapixel LS4 camera mosaics 32 2k4k fully depleted CCDs, providing a
20 deg field of view with pixel resolution. The LS4
camera will have excellent performance at longer wavelengths: in a standard 45
s exposure the expected 5 limiting magnitudes in , , are
21.5, 20.9, and 20.3 mag (AB), respectively. The telescope
design requires a novel filter holder that fixes different bandpasses over each
quadrant of the detector. Two quadrants will have band, while the other two
will be and band and color information will be obtained by dithering
targets across the different quadrants. The majority (90%) of the observing
time will be used to conduct a public survey that monitors the extragalactic
sky at both moderate (3 d) and high (1 d) cadence, as well as focused
observations within the Galactic bulge and plane. Alerts from the public survey
will be broadcast to the community via established alert brokers. LS4 will run
concurrently with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and
Time (LSST). The combination of LS4+LSST will enable detailed holistic
monitoring of many nearby transients: high-cadence LS4 observations will
resolve the initial rise and peak of the light curve while less-frequent but
deeper observations by LSST will characterize the years before and after
explosion. Here, we summarize the primary science objectives of LS4 including
microlensing events in the Galaxy, extragalactic transients, the search for
electromagnetic counterparts to multi-messenger events, and cosmology
The La Silla Schmidt Southern Survey
We present the La Silla Schmidt Southern Survey (LS4), a new wide-field, time-domain survey to be conducted with the 1 m ESO Schmidt telescope. The 268 megapixel LS4 camera mosaics 32 2k × 4k fully depleted CCDs, providing a ∼20 deg2 field of view with 1″ pixel−1 resolution. The LS4 camera will have excellent performance at longer wavelengths: in a standard 45 s exposure the expected 5σ limiting magnitudes in g, i, z are ∼21.5, ∼20.9, and ∼20.3 mag (AB), respectively. The telescope design requires a novel filter holder that fixes different bandpasses over each quadrant of the detector. Two quadrants will have i band, while the other two will be g and z band with color information obtained by dithering targets across the different quadrants. The majority (90%) of the observing time will be used to conduct a public survey that monitors the extragalactic sky at both moderate (3 days) and high (1 day) cadence, as well as focused observations within the Galactic plane and bulge. Alerts from the public survey will be broadcast to the community via established alert brokers. LS4 will run concurrently with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). The combination of LS4+LSST will enable detailed holistic monitoring of many nearby transients: high-cadence LS4 observations will resolve the initial rise and peak of the light curve while less-frequent but deeper observations by LSST will characterize the years before and after explosion. Here, we summarize the primary science objectives of LS4 including microlensing events in the Galaxy, extragalactic transients powered by massive black holes or stellar explosions, the search for electromagnetic counterparts to multi-messenger events, and supernova cosmology
Constituting the Field
This article critically explores Harry Torrance’s four-volume edited collection Qualitative Research Methods in Education. The author argues that this text is an important intervention in the constitution of a meta-discourse on qualitative research today. Torrance pays particular attention to the field of education, providing much needed historical and genealogical perspectives on contemporary discussions in the field. </jats:p
