Magneto-Electric Effect for Multiferroic Thin Film by Monte Carlo Simulation

Magneto-electric effect in a multiferroic heterostructure film, i.e. a coupled ferromagnetic-ferroelectric thin film, has been investigated through the use of the Metropolis algorithm in Monte Carlo simulations. A classical Heisenberg model describes the energy stored in the ferromagnetic film, and we use a pseudo-spin model with a transverse Ising Hamiltonian to characterise the energy of electric dipoles in the ferroelectric film. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the dynamic response of polarisation is driven by an external magnetic field, when there is a linear magneto-electric coupling at the interface between the ferromagnetic and ferroelectric components.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, The 3rd Advanced Electromagnetics Symposium, Citation: Eur. Some fragments of second-order logic over the reals for which satisfiability and equivalence are (un)decidable

We consider the Σ1 0-fragment of second-order logic over the vocabulary h+, ×, 0, 1, <, S1, ..., Ski, interpreted over the reals, where the predicate symbols Si are interpreted as semi-algebraic sets. We show that, in this context, satisfiability of formulas is decidable for the first-order ∃ ∗ - quantifier fragment and undecidable for the ∃ ∗∀- and ∀ ∗ -fragments. La heterogeneidad de los mundos contemporáneos nos interpela para repensar las teorías de la comunicación. Conceptos clave como comunicación, cultura y hegemonía son retomados aquí desde sus relaciones con los falsos cognados. Se propone una reconceptualización en base a la idea de que la heterogeneidad es constitutiva de todos los procesos de comunicación. Se propone la contraposición entre contacto y comprensión para estudiar procesos comunicativos, desafío que desestabiliza las nociones clásicas de “cultura”. Nuevamente, la cuestión teórica radica en pensar críticamente las tensiones entre marcos dentro de los cuales se instituyen lógicas específicas entre las partes. La hegemonía es constitutiva de las dinámicas de contacto y comprensión, así como de las relaciones entre las partes y el todo. Las visiones que postulan la autonomía absoluta de lo popular, así como las opuestas que afirman clausuras todopoderosas de la circulación del sentido, requieren de otras hendiduras teóricas que permitan instituir desde otros lenguajes las potencialidades de proyectos emancipatorios.The heterogeneity of contemporary worlds challenges us to rethink theories of communication. The key concepts of communication, culture and hegemony are taken up here from their relationships with false cognates. A reconceptualization is proposed based on the idea that heterogeneity is constitutive of all communication processes. Just this need raises the contrast between contact and understanding to study communication processes. That same challenge destabilizes the classical notions of “culture”. Again, the question is theoretical thinking critically tensions between frames within which specific logical instituted between the parts. In turn, power and hegemony are constitutive of the dynamics of contact and understanding, as well as the relationships between the parts and the whole. A lower bound for the complexity of linear optimization from a quantifier-elimination point of view

We discuss the impact of data structures in quantifier elimination. We analyze the arithmetic complexity of the feasibility problem in linear optimization theory as a quantifier-elimination problem. For the case of polyhedra defined by $2n$ halfspaces in $mathbb{R}^n$ we prove that, if dense representation is used to code polynomials, any quantifier-free formula expressing the set of parameters describing nonempty polyhedra has size $Omega(4^{n})$

¿Románticos y realistas? Diálogos sobre conocimiento y política

El presente texto es una respuesta, y una propuesta, al artículo «¿Romanticismo?», escrito y difundido por el Colectivo Situaciones en su sitio de Internet a propósito de un debate clásico: la relación entre conocimiento y política. El texto de Situaciones alude a un diálogo con Arturo Escobar que fue publicado en esta revista, donde en un tramo se plantea una opción teórico-metodológica entre el «romanticismo» y el «realismo». Según Situaciones, la tensión es entre dos opciones intelectuales dicotómicas: militancia de investigación por un lado; investigación científica o académica por otro. Aquí se afirma que los polos de esa tensión pueden tener puntos de contacto, como cuando se introduce una perspectiva política en los horizontes comprensivos con el fin de transformar la realidad. Pero advierte también la necesidad de una política de las agendas de investigación y una política de la teoría que enfrenten las tendencias a analizar actores que a los investigadores les gustan y que desarrollan discursos y prácticas con los cuales estos se identifican
