Measurement of the inclusive and dijet cross-sections of b-jets in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The inclusive and dijet production cross-sections have been measured for jets
containing b-hadrons (b-jets) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass
energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The
measurements use data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb^-1.
The b-jets are identified using either a lifetime-based method, where secondary
decay vertices of b-hadrons in jets are reconstructed using information from
the tracking detectors, or a muon-based method where the presence of a muon is
used to identify semileptonic decays of b-hadrons inside jets. The inclusive
b-jet cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum in the
range 20 < pT < 400 GeV and rapidity in the range |y| < 2.1. The bbbar-dijet
cross-section is measured as a function of the dijet invariant mass in the
range 110 < m_jj < 760 GeV, the azimuthal angle difference between the two jets
and the angular variable chi in two dijet mass regions. The results are
compared with next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. Good agreement is observed
between the measured cross-sections and the predictions obtained using POWHEG +
Pythia. MC@NLO + Herwig shows good agreement with the measured bbbar-dijet
cross-section. However, it does not reproduce the measured inclusive
cross-section well, particularly for central b-jets with large transverse

Applying behavioural theory to the challenge of sustainable development: using hairdressers as diffusers of more sustainable hair-care practices
The challenges presented by sustainable development are broadly accepted, yet resource use increases unabated. It is increasingly acknowledged that while technical solutions may play a part, a key issue is behaviour change. In response to this there has been a plethora of studies into how behaviour change can be enabled, predominantly from psychological and sociological perspectives. This has resulted in a substantial body of knowledge into the factors that drive behaviour change and how they can be manipulated to achieve desired social goals. In this paper we describe a study that draws on this body of knowledge to design an intervention to drive behaviour change across the hairdressing sector, and by the process of diffusion, across the vast social networks of this occupational group to influence domestic hair-care practices. The intervention was successful: hairdressers indicated positive intentions to adopt more sustainable practices within their salons and pass them onto their customers. The customer survey (N=776) confirms this: customers surveyed after their hairdresser attended the Green-Salon-Makeover intervention were significantly more likely to report that environmental issues had been considered in their salon visit and that they themselves would consider such issues in their hair-care practices at home than customers who were surveyed before the intervention
Novel Methods for Analysing Bacterial Tracks Reveal Persistence in Rhodobacter sphaeroides
Tracking bacteria using video microscopy is a powerful experimental approach to probe their motile behaviour. The
trajectories obtained contain much information relating to the complex patterns of bacterial motility. However, methods for
the quantitative analysis of such data are limited. Most swimming bacteria move in approximately straight lines,
interspersed with random reorientation phases. It is therefore necessary to segment observed tracks into swimming and
reorientation phases to extract useful statistics. We present novel robust analysis tools to discern these two phases in tracks.
Our methods comprise a simple and effective protocol for removing spurious tracks from tracking datasets, followed by
analysis based on a two-state hidden Markov model, taking advantage of the availability of mutant strains that exhibit
swimming-only or reorientating-only motion to generate an empirical prior distribution. Using simulated tracks with varying
levels of added noise, we validate our methods and compare them with an existing heuristic method. To our knowledge this
is the first example of a systematic assessment of analysis methods in this field. The new methods are substantially more
robust to noise and introduce less systematic bias than the heuristic method. We apply our methods to tracks obtained
from the bacterial species Rhodobacter sphaeroides and Escherichia coli. Our results demonstrate that R. sphaeroides exhibits
persistence over the course of a tumbling event, which is a novel result with important implications in the study of this and
similar species
Translating upwards: linking the neural and social sciences via neuroeconomics
The social and neural sciences share a common interest in understanding
the mechanisms that underlie human behaviour. However, interactions between
neuroscience and social science disciplines remain strikingly narrow and tenuous.
We illustrate the scope and challenges for such interactions using the paradigmatic
example of neuroeconomics. Using quantitative analyses of both its scientific
literature and the social networks in its intellectual community, we show that
neuroeconomics now reflects a true disciplinary integration, such that research
topics and scientific communities with interdisciplinary span exert greater
influence on the field. However, our analyses also reveal key structural and
intellectual challenges in balancing the goals of neuroscience with those of the
social sciences. To address these challenges, we offer a set of prescriptive
recommendations for directing future research in neuroeconomics

Types of psychosocial job demands and adverse events due to dental mismanagement: a cross sectional study
BACKGROUND: A harsh work environment including psychosocial job demands might cause adverse events due to medical mismanagement, but the association has not been explored. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether some types of psychosocial job demands are associated with adverse events due to dental mismanagement experienced by general dental practitioners. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was mailed to members of a local branch of the Japan dental association. A total of 261 dental practitioners responded anonymously (response rate 53%). Psychosocial job demands were measured by a Japanese version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, which comprises five sub-scales: quantitative demands, cognitive demands, emotional demands, demands for hiding emotions, and sensorial demands. The outcome was defined according to whether the respondent's patients experienced one of the following adverse events due to dental mismanagement at least once during the previous one year: dropping of dental instrument or broken injection needle, soft tissue or nerve injury, accidental bleeding, loss of a tooth root into the maxillary sinus, and emphysema. Associations between each demand index and experience of adverse events were examined by logistic regression analyses adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: Emotional demands and sensorial demands were significantly associated with the experience of adverse events (odds ratio = 3.9 for each). Other than the indices, male gender, younger age, practice alone, many dental chairs (five or more), and many patients (30 or more per day) were the risks. Working hours per week and number of paramedical staff had no significant associations. CONCLUSION: Emotional and sensorial job demands are a potential target for the reduction of adverse events due to dental mismanagement
Rapid Reactivation of Extralymphoid CD4 T Cells during Secondary Infection
After infection, extralymphoid tissues are enriched with effector and memory T cells of a highly activated phenotype. The capacity for rapid effector cytokine response from extralymphoid tissue-memory T cells suggests these cells may perform a ‘sentinel’ function in the tissue. While it has been demonstrated that extralymphoid CD4+ T cells can directly respond to secondary infection, little is known about how rapidly this response is initiated, and how early activation of T cells in the tissue may affect the innate response to infection. Here we use a mouse model of secondary heterosubtypic influenza infection to show that CD4+ T cells in the lung airways are reactivated within 24 hours of secondary challenge. Airway CD4+ T cells initiate an inflammatory cytokine and chemokine program that both alters the composition of the early innate response and contributes to the reduction of viral titers in the lung. These results show that, unlike a primary infection, extralymphoid tissue-memory CD4+ T cells respond alongside the innate response during secondary infection, thereby shaping the overall immune profile in the airways. These data provide new insights into the role of extralymphoid CD4+ T cells during secondary immune responses
