As curiosity grew in the Renaissance, so did the scope of collections of wonders. The Cricket Cage, Jade Screen, and Iron Dragon are three examples of rare collection items from the Far East. While these three east Asian small wonders may have been commonplace in their country of origin, they were considered marvelous to the collectors of Europe who had never seen objects such as these produced in their own countries. Influence of salicylic acid on phytochelatin synthesis in Zea mays during Cd stress
Abstract: Presoaking maize (Zea mays) seeds in salicylic acid (SA) reduces damage caused by cadmium. In the present work the possible
role of phytochelatins (PCs) in SA-mediated protection against Cd toxicity was investigated. Seeds were presoaked in 0.5 mM SA, and
seedlings were grown in hydroponic solution containing 0, 0.01, 0.015, or 0.025 mM Cd. Treatment with Cd increased the PC levels in
maize roots, but only slight changes were observed in the leaves. Long-term exposure to Cd decreased the phytochelatin synthase (PCS)
activity in the roots and led to an increase in PCS and glutathione reductase (GR) activities in maize leaves. Although presoaking seeds
in SA solution before exposure to Cd may reduce the level of heavy metal injury and has an effect on the composition of individual PCs,
this protection is not directly connected with the altered regulation of PCs
Electronic phase separation near the superconductor-insulator transition of Nd1+xBa2−xCu3O7−δ thin films studied by an electric-field-induced doping effect
We report a detailed study of the transport properties of Nd(1+x)Ba(2-x)Cu(3)O(7-delta) thin films with doping changed by field effect. The data cover the whole superconducting to insulating transition and show remarkable Similarities with the effect of chemical doping in high critical temperature superconductors. The results suggest that the add-on of carriers is accompanied by an electronic phase separation, independent on the details of the doping mechanism
Automatic best wireless network selection based on key performance indicators
Introducing cognitive mechanisms at the application layer may lead to the possibility of an automatic selection of the wireless network that can guarantee best perceived experience by the final user. This chapter investigates this approach based on the concept of Quality of Experience (QoE), by introducing the use of application layer parameters, namely Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). KPIs are defined for different traffic types based on experimental data. A model for an ap- plication layer cognitive engine is presented, whose goal is to identify and select, based on KPIs, the best wireless network among available ones. An experimenta- tion for the VoIP case, that foresees the use of the One-way end-to-end delay (OED) and the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) as KPIs is presented. This first implementation of the cognitive engine selects the network that, in that specific instant, offers the best QoE based on real captured data. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a cognitive engine that achieves best QoE in a context of heterogeneous wireless networks
Directional detection of Dark Matter
Among the many experimental techniques available, those providing directional
information have the potential of yielding an unambiguous observation of WIMPs
even in the presence of insidious backgrounds. A measurement of the
distribution of arrival direction of WIMPs can also discriminate between
Galactic Dark Matter halo models. In this article, I will discuss the
motivation for directional detectors and review the experimental techniques
used by the various experiments. I will then describe one of them, the DMTPC

Effective potential at finite temperature in a constant hypermagnetic field: Ring diagrams in the Standard Model
We study the symmetry breaking phenomenon in the standard model during the
electroweak phase transition in the presence of a constant hypermagnetic field.
We compute the finite temperature effective potential up to the contribution of
ring diagrams in the weak field, high temperature limit and show that under

Effective potential at finite temperature in a constant magnetic field I: Ring diagrams in a scalar theory
We study symmetry restoration at finite temperature in the theory of a
charged scalar field interacting with a constant, external magnetic field. We
compute the finite temperature effective potential including the contribution
from ring diagrams. We show that in the weak field case, the presence of the
field produces a stronger first order phase transition and that the temperature
for the onset of the transition is lower, as compared to the case without

Early metal enrichment in high-redshift quasars
Quasars are powerful systems whose spectrum is rich of metal features that
allow us to investigate the chemical evolution of galaxies at very high
redshift, even close to the reionization epoch. I review the main observational
constraints on the metallicity of quasars host galaxies at high redshift and
discuss the implications and issues for models of galaxy evolution in the early

Advances on GRB as cosmological tools
Several interesting correlations among Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) prompt and
afterglow properties have been found in the recent years. Some of these
correlations have been proposed also to standardize GRB energetics to use them
as standard candles in constraining the expansion history of the universe up to
z>6. However, given the still unexplained nature of most of these correlations,
only the less scattered correlations can be used for constraining the
cosmological parameters. The updated E_peak-E_gamma correlation is presented.
