The Influence of Physiological Status on age Prediction of Anopheles Arabiensis Using Near Infra-red spectroscopy
Determining the age of malaria vectors is essential for evaluating the impact of interventions that reduce the survival of wild mosquito populations and for estimating changes in vectorial capacity. Near infra-red spectroscopy (NIRS) is a simple and non-destructive method that has been used to determine the age and species of Anopheles gambiae s.l. by analyzing differences in absorption spectra. The spectra are affected by biochemical changes that occur during the life of a mosquito and could be influenced by senescence and also the life history of the mosquito, i.e., mating, blood feeding and egg-laying events. To better understand these changes, we evaluated the influence of mosquito physiological status on NIR energy absorption spectra. Mosquitoes were kept in individual cups to permit record keeping of each individual insect’s life history. Mosquitoes of the same chronological age, but at different physiological stages, were scanned and compared using cross-validations. We observed a slight trend within some physiological stages that suggest older insects tend to be predicted as being physiologically more mature. It was advantageous to include mosquitoes of different chronological ages and physiological stages in calibrations, as it increases the robustness of the model resulting in better age predictions. Progression through different physiological statuses of An. arabiensis influences the chronological age prediction by the NIRS. Entomologists that wish to use NIR technology to predict the age of field-caught An. gambiae s.l from their study area should use a calibration developed from their field strain using mosquitoes of diverse chronological ages and physiological stages to increase the robustness and accuracy of the predictions.\u
The Spatial, Ionization, and Kinematic Conditions of the z=1.39 Damped Ly-alpha Absorber in Q0957+561 A,B
We examined the sizes of the absorption clouds in a z=1.3911 damped Ly-alpha
absorber (DLA) in the double image lensed quasar Q0957+561 A,B (separation 135
pc at the absorber redshift). Using HIRES/Keck spectra, we studied the MgII
2796,2803 doublet, FeII multiplet, and MgI 2853 transition in absorption. We
defined six "clouds" in the system of sightline A and seven clouds in the
system of sightline B. An examination of the N(v) profiles, using the apparent
optical depth method, reveals no clear physical connection between the clouds
in A and those in B. The observed column density ratios of all clouds is
log[N(MgI)/N(FeII)] ~ -2 across the full velocity range in both systems and
also spatially (in both sightlines). This is a remarkable uniformity not seen
in Lyman limit systems. The uniformity of the cloud properties suggests that
the multiple clouds are not part of a "halo". Based upon photoionization
modeling, we constrain the ionization parameters in the range -6.2 < log(U) <
-5.1, where the range brackets known abundance ratio and dust depletion
patterns. The inferred cloud properties are densities of 2 < n_H < 20 cm^-3,
and line of sight sizes of 1 < D < 25 pc. The masses of the clouds in system A
are 10 < M/M_sun < 1000 and in system B are 1 < M/M_sun < 60 for spherical
clouds. For planar clouds, the upper limits are 400 M_sun and 160 M_sun for A
and B, respectively. We favor a model of the absorber in which the DLA region
itself is a single cloud in thiscomplex, which could be a parcel of gas in a
galactic ISM. A spherical cloud of ~10 pc would be limited to one of the
sightlines (A) and imply a covering factor less than 0.1 for the DLA complex.
We infer that the DLA cloud properties are consistent with those of lower

Electron impact excitations of S2 molecules
Low-energy electron impact excitations of S_2 molecules are studied using the
fixed-bond R-matrix method based on state-averaged complete active space SCF
orbitals. Integral cross sections are calculated for elastic electron collision
as well as impact excitation of the 7 lowest excited electronic states. Also,
differential cross sections are obtained for elastic collision and excitation
of the a^1 Delta_g, b^1 Sigma_g^+ and B^3 Sigma_u^- states. The integrated
cross section of optically allowed excitation of the B^3 Sigma_u^- state agrees

Heisenberg Dimer Single Molecule Magnets in a Strong Magnetic Field
We calculate the static and dynamic properties of single crystal, single
molecule magnets consisting of equal spin or 5/2 dimers. The spins in
each dimer interact with each other via the Heisenberg exchange interaction and
with the magnetic induction via the Zeeman interaction, and
interdimer interactions are negligible. For antiferromagnetic couplings, the
static magnetization and specific heat exhibit interesting low temperature
and strong quantum effects. We calculate the frequency spectrum of
the Fourier transform of the real part of the time autocorrelation function
for arbitrary , and compare our results with
those obtained for classical spins. We also calculate the inelastic neutron

Emerging Practice in Responsible Supply Chain Management: Closed-Pipe Supply Chain of Conflict-Free Minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo
Minerals originated from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are blamed for financing violent conflict in the area over the past decade and have been called conflict minerals. They vividly demonstrate a key human rights issue facing responsible supply chain management. The conflict minerals issue has led to a significant shift in responsible supply chain management in two ways: extending producer responsibility to respect human rights in the total supply chain through establishing traceability and transparency; and developing legally binding supply chain responsibility.This article examines an emerging effort to source conflict-free minerals using closed-pipe supply chain in the DRC as a new strategy to respond to the above paradigm shift. By exploring whether this new strategy can contribute to conflict prevention in the DRC, this article argues that the closed-pipe supply chain allows building long-term relationship with various stakeholders and has the potential to transform socio-economic structures in the producing communities, thereby leading to peacebuilding in the long run.<br/
In situ detection of boron by ChemCam on Mars
We report the first in situ detection of boron on Mars. Boron has been detected in Gale crater at levels Curiosity rover ChemCam instrument in calcium-sulfate-filled fractures, which formed in a late-stage groundwater circulating mainly in phyllosilicate-rich bedrock interpreted as lacustrine in origin. We consider two main groundwater-driven hypotheses to explain the presence of boron in the veins: leaching of borates out of bedrock or the redistribution of borate by dissolution of borate-bearing evaporite deposits. Our results suggest that an evaporation mechanism is most likely, implying that Gale groundwaters were mildly alkaline. On Earth, boron may be a necessary component for the origin of life; on Mars, its presence suggests that subsurface groundwater conditions could have supported prebiotic chemical reactions if organics were also present and provides additional support for the past habitability of Gale crater
Entomological Surveillance of Behavioural Resilience and Resistance in Residual Malaria Vector Populations.
The most potent malaria vectors rely heavily upon human blood so they are vulnerable to attack with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) within houses. Mosquito taxa that can avoid feeding or resting indoors, or by obtaining blood from animals, mediate a growing proportion of the dwindling transmission that persists as ITNs and IRS are scaled up. Increasing frequency of behavioural evasion traits within persisting residual vector systems usually reflect the successful suppression of the most potent and vulnerable vector taxa by IRS or ITNs, rather than their failure. Many of the commonly observed changes in mosquito behavioural patterns following intervention scale-up may well be explained by modified taxonomic composition and expression of phenotypically plastic behavioural preferences, rather than altered innate preferences of individuals or populations. Detailed review of the contemporary evidence base does not yet provide any clear-cut example of true behavioural resistance and is, therefore, consistent with the hypothesis presented. Caution should be exercised before over-interpreting most existing reports of increased frequency of behavioural traits which enable mosquitoes to evade fatal contact with insecticides: this may simply be the result of suppressing the most behaviourally vulnerable of the vector taxa that constituted the original transmission system. Mosquito taxa which have always exhibited such evasive traits may be more accurately described as behaviourally resilient, rather than resistant. Ongoing national or regional entomological monitoring surveys of physiological susceptibility to insecticides should be supplemented with biologically and epidemiologically meaningfully estimates of malaria vector population dynamics and the behavioural phenotypes that determine intervention impact, in order to design, select, evaluate and optimize the implementation of vector control measures
Evaluation of alternative mosquito sampling methods for malaria vectors in Lowland South - East Zambia.
Sampling malaria vectors and measuring their biting density is of paramount importance for entomological surveys of malaria transmission. Human landing catch (HLC) has been traditionally regarded as a gold standard method for surveying human exposure to mosquito bites. However, due to the risk of human participant exposure to mosquito-borne parasites and viruses, a variety of alternative, exposure-free trapping methods were compared in lowland, south-east Zambia. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention miniature light trap (CDC-LT), Ifakara Tent Trap model C (ITT-C), resting boxes (RB) and window exit traps (WET) were all compared with HLC using a 3 × 3 Latin Squares design replicated in 4 blocks of 3 houses with long lasting insecticidal nets, half of which were also sprayed with a residual deltamethrin formulation, which was repeated for 10 rounds of 3 nights of rotation each during both the dry and wet seasons. The mean catches of HLC indoor, HLC outdoor, CDC-LT, ITT-C, WET, RB indoor and RB outdoor, were 1.687, 1.004, 3.267, 0.088, 0.004, 0.000 and 0.008 for Anopheles quadriannulatus Theobald respectively, and 7.287, 6.784, 10.958, 5.875, 0.296, 0.158 and 0.458, for An. funestus Giles, respectively. Indoor CDC-LT was more efficient in sampling An. quadriannulatus and An. funestus than HLC indoor (Relative rate [95% Confidence Interval] = 1.873 [1.653, 2.122] and 1.532 [1.441, 1.628], respectively, P < 0.001 for both). ITT-C was the only other alternative which had comparable sensitivity (RR = 0.821 [0.765, 0.881], P < 0.001), relative to HLC indoor other than CDC-LT for sampling An. funestus. While the two most sensitive exposure-free techniques primarily capture host-seeking mosquitoes, both have substantial disadvantages for routine community-based surveillance applications: the CDC-LT requires regular recharging of batteries while the bulkiness of ITT-C makes it difficult to move between sampling locations. RB placed indoors or outdoors and WET had consistently poor sensitivity so it may be useful to evaluate additional alternative methods, such as pyrethrum spray catches and back packer aspirators, for catching resting mosquitoes
