Direction based Heuristic for Pathfinding in Video Games
Pathfinding has been one of major research areas in video games for many years. It is a key problem that most of the video games are confronted with. Search algorithms such as the A* algorithm and the Dijkstra2019;s algorithm representing such regular grid, visibility graphs also have significant impact on the performance. This paper reviews the current widely used solutions for pathfinding and proposes a new method which is expected to generate a higher quality path using less time and memory than other existing solutions. The deployment of the methodologies and techniques is described in detail. The significance of the proposed method in future video games is addressed and the conclusion is given at the end
Cancer burden and alarm signals: a community based study from Kerala, India
Background: Cancer is emerging as a major public health concern in many countries including India. Kerala state has the highest burden of cancer in the country. Objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of diagnosed cancers, warning signs and selected risk factors of cancer in Kadapra Panchayath of Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Methods: A total of 16,391 population was covered by door to door survey using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire collected information on the sociodemographic variables of the residents, source of water supply, warning signs of cancer and details of diagnosed cancer cases. Results: The mean age of the population was 40.9+21 years. The prevalence of diagnosed cases of cancer in our study population was 776/100,000 population. Breast cancer was the most common cancer (43.5%) identified in the population. The prevalence of any warning sign among the study population was 220/100,000 population. Breast lump was the common warning sign identified. Increasing age and female gender were the factors found to be significantly associated with cancer. Conclusions: As prevalence of cancer was found to be high in this population, an active community based screening along with teaching self-breast examination to the women in the community are required. Improving community awareness could help in early diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Soil and water testing for carcinogens is recommended
Systemic Therapy in Thyroid Cancer
The standard treatment for patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is a combination of surgery, radioactive iodine (RAI), and long-term thyroid hormone–suppression therapy. Treatment of patients whose diseases persist, recur, or metastasize remains a challenge. The role of cytotoxic chemotherapy in the treatment of thyroid cancer is limited. The key signaling pathways involved in the pathogenesis of thyroid cancers are the RAS/RAF/MEK & PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathways. Systemic therapy in thyroid cancer involves the use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors targeting the above mentioned pathways which are often both effective in controlling disease and have manageable toxicity. Sorafenib and lenvatinib are approved for advanced radioiodine refractory and poorly differentiated thyroid cancers and vandetanib and cabozantinib for recurrent or metastatic medullary thyroid cancers. Cabozantinib is also approved for the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic radioactive iodine–refractory differentiated thyroid cancer that has progressed after prior VEGF-targeted therapy. The combination of dabrafenib (BRAF inhibitor) and trametinib (MEK inhibitor) is approved for BRAF V600E mutated unresectable locally advanced anaplastic thyroid cancer. Selpercatinib, RET kinase inhibitor is used for advanced and metastatic RET mutated medullary thyroid cancers and advanced and metastatic RET fusion-positive thyroid cancers of any histologic type. Various clinical trials using newer molecules targeting the aforementioned pathways are ongoing
Diversity analysis of released varieties of Indian cardamom using ISSR markers reveal narrowing genetic base
311-322Elettaria cardamomum Maton the small cardamom of commerce is a monotypic genus in India under the family Zingiberaceae. Genetic diversity studies using inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were conducted on a total of 13 released varieties of cardamom including selections and hybrids from different research stations in South India along with a popular variety Njallani and a wild relative Aframomum sps as checks. ISSR markers however, revealed relatively high level of genetic redundancy among the tested varieties with the exception of a few. Nonetheless, unweighted pair group method of arithmetic average (UPGMA) based cluster analysis of the similarity matrix differentiated all the varieties tested with the exception of two and segregated the wild relative Aframomum. Considerable reduction of polymorphism percentage was observed on exclusion of Aframomum while studying ISSR polymorphism which could be an indicator of the narrowing genetic base in the released varieties. Morphological data were compiled based on International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) cardamom descriptor and revealed moderate variability among the varieties. The results highlighted the requirement of molecular characterization of unutilized germplasm accessions, related wild species, and exotic relatives using specific molecular markers to help refine breeding efforts and introgression of new alleles for further improvement and enhancement of genetic base of cultivated cardamom
Challenges and opportunities in mixed method data collection on mental health issues of health care workers during COVID-19 pandemic in India
Background: The present paper describes the key challenges and opportunities of mixed method telephonic data collection for mental health research using field notes and the experiences of the investigators in a multicenter study in ten sites of India. The study was conducted in public and private hospitals to understand the mental health status, social stigma and coping strategies of different healthcare personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic in India. Methods: Qualitative and quantitative interviews were conducted telephonically. The experiences of data collection were noted as a field notes/diary by the data collectors and principal investigators. Results: The interviewers reported challenges such as network issues, lack of transfer of visual cues and sensitive content of data. Although the telephonic interviews present various challenges in mixed method data collection, it can be used as an alternative to face-to-face data collection using available technology. Conclusions: It is important that the investigators are well trained keeping these challenges in mind so that their capacity is built to deal with these challenges and good quality data is obtained
