Strategies and mechanisms for electronic peer review
This journal article published at the October 2000 Frontiers in Education Conference discusses strategies and mechanisms for electronic peer review. It outlines a peer-grading system for review of student assignments over the World-Wide Web called Peer Grader. The system allows authors and reviewers to communicate and authors to update their submissions. This system facilitates collaborative learning and makes it possible to break up a large project into smaller portions. The article summarizes a unique and innovative method of peer-review. Educational levels: Graduate or professional
Another look at the determinants of current account imbalances in the European Union: An empirical assessment
In a dynamic panel framework, I investigate the qualitative aspects of factors determining current account imbalances in (country groupings within) the European Union. I consider the standard determinants of current account positions discussed in the past literature, but additionally, I include a series of explanatory variables that refer to the sectoral composition of the European economies and that could have significantly contributed to the current account developments in the past decades. Independently of the econometric method used, the main finding suggests that the economic predominance of the construction sector might have played an important role in aggravating current account positions in the European economies. In parallel, some negative influence could be found for some other service sectors, but this shouldn't be of much concern due to their role played in the growth process
The Art of music, apple pie, and coping
Every human has negative energy that needs to be channeled to some place and the reality is, we thrive on emotion and must maintain a healthy equilibrium in order to function. Whether it is turning to external remedies or looking to one's self, coping is a necessary process. Depending on the nature of the obstacle, people seem to seek some kind of remedy to offset the ordeals in life
Pecuniary knowledge externalities across European countries: Are there leading sectors?
This paper investigates empirically the occurrence of pecuniary knowledge externalities at the sectoral level across European economies. The main results suggest that, although some sectors can be considered as playing a particularly important role as a source of pecuniary knowledge externalities in the majority of examined countries, there exist significant national differences in the occurrence of these effects. Moreover, such external effects influence the dynamics of total factor productivity in downstream sectors and appear as a relevant source of growth in modern economies. As such, the concept of pecuniary knowledge externalities, as opposed to pure knowledge externalities postulated in the new growth theory, provides a new clue to understanding of the growth process
Longevity and technological change
We analyze the impact of increasing longevity on technological progress within an R&D-based endogenous growth framework and test the model's implications on OECD data from 1960 to 2011. The central hypothesis derived in the theoretical part is that - by raising the incentives of households to invest in physical capital and in R&D - decreasing mortality positively impacts upon technological progress and thereby also on productivity growth. The empirical results clearly confirm the theoretical prediction which implies that the ongoing demographic changes in industrialized economies are not necessarily detrimental to economic prosperity, at least as far as technological progress and productivity growth are concerned
European market integration and the determinants of firm localization: The case of Poland
The paper analyses empirically the determinants of firms´ localization in Poland. We use regional data of the sixteen Polish administrative regions over the period 2003 to 2010 to examine which role agglomeration forces and other factors played in explaining the choice to operate in a certain location. Our results suggest that agglomeration economies stemming in particular from the R&D sector, as well as human capital and the infrastructure positively influence the regional localization of firms. Poland´s accession to the European Union had a positive impact for the location decision of new firms in the Polish economy
Comparative research of Non-Profit Organisations: a preliminary assessment
This article examines the state of comparative research of Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs). Reviewing 110 articles published in philanthropic and third sector journals in the last 10 years, this article surveys the essential aspects of the research design and content of comparative studies. It is found that practical constraints of the comparative research practice influence NPO research. It is observed that volunteering, regulation NPOs development and philanthropy are the main subject areas examined in comparative research of NPOs, and the main analytical frameworks adopted are social capital, civil society, and welfare regimes. The conclusion points to the necessity to improve the comparative research agenda through the development multi-level analyses, the inclusion of the time dimension and the assessment of the sets of theories used
IRREGULARITIES IN THE YRAST LINE OF 156Er
The variation of the moment of inertia vs the rotational frequency has been investigated at high spin values using the141Pr(19F, 4nγ) 156Er reaction. In addition to the backbending at I = 12 ħ, a second one has been found at I = 26 ħ. Calculations performed by the Warsaw group with the HFB cranking model suggest a probable neutron effect
