Online learning : towards enabling choice
Education is rapidly evolving from an opportunity that was provided mainly for an elite to one that is available to a mass markets and as such is prone to the forces generated by this environment. Where, in the established pattern, commercial interest was limited mainly to the use of skills developed during the educational process, the future model of educational provision will involve extensive commercial activity in the production, delivery and marketing of material. Already there are a number of commercial companies offering framework products enabling "off the shelf solutions" for the construction and delivery of web based courses in any subject area. The commercialisation of education is underway and it is inevitable that it will be viewed, by entrepreneurs and customers alike, as any other commercial product. It would seem reasonable that the consumer should be able to evaluate the performance of these new modes of working in a similar manner to other commercial products. Extreme CO Isotopic Abundances in the ULIRG IRAS 13120-5453: An Extremely Young Starburst or Top-Heavy Initial Mass Function
We present ALMA CO (J=1-0, 3-2 and 6-5), CO (J=1-0) and
CO (J=1-0) observations of the local Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxy,
IRAS 13120-5453 (dubbed "The Yo-yo"). The morphologies of the three isotopic
species differ, where CO shows a hole in emission towards the center. We
measure integrated brightness temperature line ratios of CO/CO
60 (exceeding 200) and CO/CO 1 in the central
region. Assuming optical thin emission, CO is more abundant than
CO in several regions. The abundances within the central 500 pc are
consistent with enrichment of the ISM via a young starburst (7Myr), a

Making a difference - the appropriate use of web technology
Much has been written elsewhere about how, different Information Technology tools, can in principle be used by groups or communities to make their web sites more effective for Continued Professional Development. In practice, complex use is not often the case. In particular, three sites were studied in Scotland, which provided web facilities for the over 60s. The sites, and the communities they served, used only simple Information Technology. Nevertheless, they enabled their communities to participate effectively, on the 'right side', of the European population's 'digital divide'
Elite male Flat jockeys display lower bone density and lower resting metabolic rate than their female counterparts: implications for athlete welfare
To test the hypothesis that daily weight-making is more problematic to health in male compared with female jockeys, we compared the bone-density and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in weight-matched male and female Flat-jockeys. RMR (kcal.kg-1 lean mass) was lower in males compared with females as well as lower bone-density Z-scores at the hip and lumbar spine. Data suggest the lifestyle of male jockeys’ compromise health more severely than females, possibly due to making-weight more frequently
Bulk Viscosity, Decaying Dark Matter, and the Cosmic Acceleration
We discuss a cosmology in which cold dark-matter particles decay into
relativistic particles. We argue that such decays could lead naturally to a
bulk viscosity in the cosmic fluid. For decay lifetimes comparable to the
present hubble age, this bulk viscosity enters the cosmic energy equation as an
effective negative pressure. We investigate whether this negative pressure is
of sufficient magnitude to account fo the observed cosmic acceleration. We show
that a single decaying species in a flat, dark-matter dominated cosmology
without a cosmological constant cannot reproduce the observed
magnitude-redshift relation from Type Ia supernovae. However, a delayed bulk
viscosity, possibly due to a cascade of decaying particles may be able to
account for a significant fraction of the apparent cosmic acceleration.
Possible candidate nonrelativistic particles for this scenario include sterile
neutrinos or gauge-mediated decaying supersymmetric particles.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Characterization of Extragalactic 24micron Sources in the Spitzer First Look Survey
In this Letter, we present the initial characterization of extragalactic 24um
sources in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) by examining their counterparts
at 8um and R-band. The color-color diagram of 24-to-8 vs. 24-to-0.7um is
populated with 18,734 sources brighter than the 3sigma flux limit of 110uJy,
over an area of 3.7sq.degrees. The 24-to-0.7um colors of these sources span
almost 4 orders of magnitudes, while the 24-to-8um colors distribute at least
over 2 orders of magnitudes. In addition to identifying ~30% of the total
sample with infrared quiescent, mostly low redshift galaxies, we also found
that: (1) 23% of the 24um sources (~1200/sq.degrees) have very red 24-to-8 and
24-to-0.7 colors and are probably infrared luminous starbursts with
L(IR)>3x10^(11)Lsun at z>1. In particular, 13% of the sample (660/sq.degrees)
are 24um detected only, with no detectable emission in either 8um or R-band.
These sources are the candidates for being ULIRGs at z>2. (2) 2% of the sample
(85/sq.degrees) have colors similar to dust reddened AGNs, like Mrk231 at
z~0.6-3. (3) We anticipate that some of these sources with extremely red colors
may be new types of sources, since they can not be modelled with any familiar
type of spectral energy distribution. We find that 17% of the 24um sources have
no detectable optical counterparts brighter than R limit of 25.5mag. Optical
spectroscopy of these optical extremely faint 24um sources would be very
difficult, and mid-infrared spectroscopy from the Spitzer would be critical for

Childhood IQ and marriage by mid-life: the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 and the Midspan Studies
The study examined the influence of IQ at age 11 years on marital status by mid-adulthood. The combined databases of the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 and the Midspan studies provided data from 883 subjects. With regard to IQ at age 11, there was an interaction between sex and marital status by mid-adulthood (p = 0.0001). Women who had ever-married achieved mean lower childhood IQ scores than women who had never-married (p < 0.001). Conversely, there was a trend for men who had ever-married to achieve higher childhood IQ scores than men who had never-married (p = 0.07). In men, the odds ratio of ever marrying was 1.35 (95% CI 0.98–1.86; p = 0.07) for each standard deviation increase in childhood IQ. Among women, the odds ratio of ever marrying by mid-life was 0.42 (95% CI 0.27–0.64; p = 0.0001) for each standard deviation increase in childhood IQ. Mid-life social class had a similar association with marriage, with women in more professional jobs and men in more manual jobs being less likely to have ever-married by mid-life. Adjustment for the effects of mid-life social class and height on the association between childhood IQ and later marriage, and vice versa, attenuated the effects somewhat, but suggested that IQ, height and social class acted partly independently

SOFIA/FORCAST and Spitzer/IRAC Imaging of the Ultra Compact H II Region W3(OH) and Associated Protostars in W3
We present infrared observations of the ultra-compact H II region W3(OH) made
by the FORCAST instrument aboard SOFIA and by Spitzer/IRAC. We contribute new
wavelength data to the spectral energy distribution, which constrains the
optical depth, grain size distribution, and temperature gradient of the dusty
shell surrounding the H II region. We model the dust component as a spherical
shell containing an inner cavity with radius ~ 600 AU, irradiated by a central
star of type O9 and temperature ~ 31,000 K. The total luminosity of this system
is 71,000 L_solar. An observed excess of 2.2 - 4.5 microns emission in the SED
can be explained by our viewing a cavity opening or clumpiness in the shell
structure whereby radiation from the warm interior of the shell can escape. We
claim to detect the nearby water maser source W3 (H2O) at 31.4 and 37.1 microns
using beam deconvolution of the FORCAST images. We constrain the flux densities
of this object at 19.7 - 37.1 microns. Additionally, we present in situ
observations of four young stellar and protostellar objects in the SOFIA field,
presumably associated with the W3 molecular cloud. Results from the model SED
fitting tool of Robitaille et al. (2006, 2007} suggest that two objects (2MASS
J02270352+6152357 and 2MASS J02270824+6152281) are intermediate-luminosity (~
236 - 432 L_solar) protostars; one object (2MASS J02270887+6152344) is either a
high-mass protostar with luminosity 3000 L_solar or a less massive young star
with a substantial circumstellar disk but depleted envelope; and one object
(2MASS J02270743+6152281) is an intermediate-luminosity (~ 768 L_solar)
protostar nearing the end of its envelope accretion phase or a young star
