Translation from, to and within the Atlantic Creoles
Translation from, to and within the Atlantic Creoles — Translation involving creóle languages suffers the general disadvantage of writing in creoles: low levels of literacy, the lack of standard orthographies, the overwhelming economic and cultural power of the metropolitan languages with which they compete. The pitfalls attendant to translation in any language are thus aggravated when translating to and from creoles, and these adverse sociolinguistic conditions affect the role of créoles as source and as target languages differently. Another possibility is of course that creoles serve as both SL and TL, and that translation be between or among creóles — a rather rare case. These three eventualities raise several issues of translation theory, in particular the role of shared implicature in languages whose cultures are related (Venuti, 1997). At the same time, certain concepts of translation theory explored recently by Robinson (1997) and others, can shed light upon the particular social and political problems faced by these languages.Traduction et créoles atlantiques — La traduction des langues créoles est sujette aux désavantages que ces langues elles-mêmes rencontrent : de bas niveaux d'alphabétisation, le manque d'orthographes établies, les effets néfastes du pouvoir que les langues « métropolitaines » exercent sur elles. Anapoles in Free-Standing III-V Nanodisks Enhancing Second-Harmonic Generation
Nonradiating electromagnetic configurations in nanostructures open new
horizons for applications due to two essential features: lack of energy losses
and invisibility to the propagating electromagnetic field. Such radiationless
configurations form a basis for new types of nanophotonic devices, where a
strong electromagnetic field confinement can be achieved together with lossless
interactions between nearby components. In our work, we present a new design of
free-standing disk nanoantennas with nonradiating current distributions for the
optical near-infrared range. We show a novel approach to create nanoantennas by
slicing III-V nanowires into standing disks using focused ion beam milling. We
experimentally demonstrate the suppression of the far-field radiation and the
associated strong enhancement of the second-harmonic generation from the disk
nanoantennas. With a theoretical analysis of the electromagnetic field
distribution using multipole expansions in both spherical and Cartesian
coordinates, we confirm that the demonstrated nonradiating configurations are
anapoles. We expect that the presented procedure to design and produce disk
nanoantennas from nanowires become one of standard approaches to fabricate
controlled chains of standing nanodisks with different designs and
configurations. These chains can be an essential building blocks for new types
of lasers and sensors with low power consumption
Journal club: role of endoscopic third ventriculostomy and ventriculoperitoneal shunt in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: preliminary results of a randomized clinical trial.
1. Significance/Context and Importance of the Study:
Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) was first defined by Hakim and colleagues in 19651, and its symptoms later classified by the clinical triad of gait dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and dementia. The exact pathophysiology of this disease is not well understood.2 Surgical options for the treatment of INPH are ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement (most commonly with a programmable valve), and endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). VPS is by far the most common method used to treat INPH worldwide. Debate exists as to the superiority between the two management options. Historically, VPS placement with a programmable valve has led to improved outcomes with INPH.3 More recent use of ETV has been reported in the form of retrospective data, demonstrating neurological improvement in up to 69% of patients.4 However, a cited limitation of this study is the less stringent diagnostic criteria that fails to discriminate secondary NPH from INPH. This is important because of the higher success rates of treatment in secondary NPH.2 This study by Pinto et al should be commended for its attempt to compare ETV to VPS with a nonprogrammable valve for patients with the diagnosis of INPH prospectively. Given that the natural history of VPS carries a significant rate of shunt revision, there have been no prior attempts to provide level I evidence demonstrating equivalence or superiority of ETV to VPS placement

Comparing ASCAT and CYGNSS Winds near Tropical Convection
Gradient Features identified in ASCAT (Advanced Scatterometer) data correspond well to observed CYGNSS (Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System) wind shifts: Comparing ASCAT and CYGNSS winds near tropical convection. Gradient wind magnitude in ASCAT observations has been recently shown to be a useful proxy for the presence of tropical convection cold pools. To help confirm this in the vicinity of precipitation we perform a comparison with the L-band CYGNSS wind dataset. Surgical management of laryngotracheal stenosis in adults
The purpose was to evaluate the outcome following the surgical management of a consecutive series of 26 adult patients with laryngotracheal stenosis of varied etiologies in a tertiary care center. Of the 83 patients who underwent surgery for laryngotracheal stenosis in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, University Hospital of Lausanne, Switzerland, between 1995 and 2003, 26 patients were adults (≥16years) and formed the group that was the focus of this study. The stenosis involved the trachea (20), subglottis (1), subglottis and trachea (2), glottis and subglottis (1) and glottis, subglottis and trachea (2). The etiology of the stenosis was post-intubation injury ( n =20), infiltration of the trachea by thyroid tumor ( n =3), seeding from a laryngeal tumor at the site of the tracheostoma ( n =1), idiopathic progressive subglottic stenosis ( n =1) and external laryngeal trauma ( n =1). Of the patients, 20 underwent tracheal resection and end-to-end anastomosis, and 5 patients had partial cricotracheal resection and thyrotracheal anastomosis. The length of resection varied from 1.5 to 6cm, with a median length of 3.4cm. Eighteen patients were extubated in the operating room, and six patients were extubated during a period of 12 to 72h after surgery. Two patients were decannulated at 12 and 18months, respectively. One patient, who developed anastomotic dehiscence 10days after surgery, underwent revision surgery with a good outcome. On long-term outcome assessment, 15 patients achieved excellent results, 7 patients had a good result and 4 patients died of causes unrelated to surgery (mean follow-up period of 3.6years). No patient showed evidence of restenosis. The excellent functional results of cricotracheal/tracheal resection and primary anastomosis in this series confirm the efficacy and reliability of this approach towards the management of laryngotracheal stenosis of varied etiologies. Similar to data in the literature, post-intubation injury was the leading cause of stenosis in our series. Observation of Amounts of Movement Practice Provided during Stroke Rehabilitation
Objective
To investigate how much movement practice occurred during stroke rehabilitation, and what factors might influence doses of practice provided.
Design
Observational survey of stroke therapy sessions.
Setting
Seven inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation sites.
Participants
We observed a convenience sample of 312 physical and occupational therapy sessions for people with stroke.
Interventions
Not applicable.
Main Outcome Measures
We recorded numbers of repetitions in specific movement categories and data on potential modifying factors (patient age, side affected, time since stroke, FIM item scores, years of therapist experience). Descriptive statistics were used to characterize amounts of practice. Correlation and regression analyses were used to determine whether potential factors were related to the amount of practice in the 2 important categories of upper extremity functional movements and gait steps.
Results
Practice of task-specific, functional upper extremity movements occurred in 51% of the sessions that addressed upper limb rehabilitation, and the average number of repetitions/session was 32 (95% confidence interval [CI]=20–44). Practice of gait occurred in 84% of sessions that addressed lower limb rehabilitation and the average number of gait steps/session was 357 (95% CI=296–418). None of the potential factors listed accounted for significant variance in the amount of practice in either of these 2 categories.
Conclusions
The amount of practice provided during poststroke rehabilitation is small compared with animal models. It is possible that current doses of task-specific practice during rehabilitation are not adequate to drive the neural reorganization needed to promote function poststroke optimally
Toxicity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in the developing male Wistar(Han) rat II: chronic dosing causes developmental delay
We have investigated whether fetal exposure to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) causes defects in the male reproductive system of the rat, using chronically exposed rats to ensure continuous exposure of the fetus. 5-6 week old rats were exposed to control diet, or diet containing TCDD, to attain an average dose of 2.4, 8 and 46 ng TCDD kg-1 day-1 for twelve weeks, whereupon the rats were mated, and allowed to litter; rats were switched to control diet after parturition. Male offspring were allowed to develop until kills on PND70 (25 per group), or PND120 (all remaining animals). Offspring from the high dose group showed an increase in total litter loss, and the number of animals alive on post-natal day (PND) 4 in the high dose group was ~26% less than control. The high and medium dose offspring showed decreased weights at various ages. Balano-preputial separation was significantly delayed in all three dose groups, compared to control. There were no significant effects of maternal treatment when the offspring were subjected to a functional observational battery, or learning tests, with the exception that the high dose group showed a deficit in motor activity. 20 rats per group were mated to females, and there were no significant effects of maternal treatment on the fertility of these rats, nor on the F1 or F2 sex ratio. Sperm parameters at PND70 and 120 showed no significant effect of maternal treatment, with the exception that there was an increase in the proportion of abnormal sperm in the high dose group at PND70; this is associated with the developmental delay in puberty in this dose group. There were no remarkable findings of maternal treatment on organ weights, with the exception that testis weights were reduced by ~10% at PND70 (but not PND120), and although the experiment was sufficiently powered to detect small changes, ventral prostate weight was not reduced. There were no significant effects of maternal treatment upon histopathological comparison of high dose and control group organs. These data confirm that developmental exposure to TCDD shows no potent effect on adult sperm parameters or accessory sexual organs, but show that delay in BPS occurs after exposure to low doses of TCDD, and this is dependent upon whether TCDD is administered acutely or chronically
The role of the CO2 laser in the management of laryngotracheal stenosis: a survey of 100 cases
Over the last decade, improvement of CO2 lasers with the microspot and ultrapulse technologies has broadened the indications for endoscopic CO2-laser resection of benign laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS). This article reviews 100 patients treated solely by endoscopic means for a LTS. There were 47 grade III, 41 grade II and 12 grade I stenoses according to the Myer-Cotton classification. The postoperative results show that the improvement to a nearly normal (>80% luminal size) airway declines from 92% (11/12 patients) for grade I to 46% (19/41 patients) for grade II and 13% (6/47 patients) for grade III stenoses. When compared to open surgery for more severe grades of stenosis (31 grade IV, 66 grade III and 3 grade II stenoses), the results of the endoscopy group is much less favorable: 36% of patients in the endoscopy group versus 76% of patients in the open surgery group were rehabilitated to a normal respiration without exertional dyspnea and 38% versus 5% patients remained tracheotomy dependent. However, if strict selection and therapeutic criteria are respected, a significant number of grade I and II stenoses, and to a lesser degree of grade III stenoses, can be improved to a nearly normal airway by endoscopic means only. The endoscopic treatment is potentially less invasive and risky and only needs a short hospital stay. To try this as a first treatment modality in a selected group of patients is worthwhile, provided that this endoscopic treatment is not repeated a second time, if the stenosis recurs to its initial grade after a primary CO2-laser treatment. A Tale of Two Sylamores: Understanding Relationships Among Land Use, Nutrients, and Aquatic Communities Across a Subsidy-Stress Gradient
Agricultural land use is known to degrade aquatic systems with high inputs of nutrients, sediments, and pesticides. Increased nutrients can lead to increased algal growth and thus possible hypoxic conditions in slow moving water, while increased sediment loads have been shown to obstruct light and reduce substrate stability. These conditions negatively impact primary producers, macroinvertebrates, and fish. However, small-scale changes in land use can subsidize an aquatic ecosystem instead, where an increase in nutrients allows nutrient-limited biota to flourish, and minor increases in sedimentation may help support populations of collector-filterers. The stimulation in performance caused by small disturbances is part of the subsidy-stress gradient, where increasing perturbation subsidizes an ecosystem until a certain threshold is reached, at which a decline in performance and increased variability starts to occur. The North and South Sylamore watersheds in north Arkansas provide a useful template to investigate the subsidy-stress gradient in relation to land use. North Sylamore flows through the Ozark National Forest and has a heavily forested catchment, while South Sylamore flows through mostly private land, some of which is pasture (23%). Physicochemical, macroinvertebrate, and fish data were collected from multiple sites within each watershed to determine if South Sylamore is exhibiting a response to pasture/agriculture characteristic of a subsidy-stress gradient. Sites within South Sylamore had significantly higher nitrate levels, larger macroinvertebrate populations dominated by collector-filterers, and greater abundance of algivorous fish, suggesting South Sylamore may be subsidized by the surrounding pastoral lands. However, South Sylamore also had a significantly lower proportional abundance of sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa and more unique tolerant fish taxa, suggesting South Sylamore is experiencing stress as well. Habitat quality of South Sylamore could be improved by restoration of trees within the riparian zone. Monitoring aquatic systems for subsidy-stress responses can inform restoration/management decisions and guide intervention prior to watersheds and aquatic communities becoming overly stressed
