Information Access in a Multilingual World: Transitioning from Research to Real-World Applications

    Get PDF
Multilingual Information Access (MLIA) is at a turning point wherein substantial real-world applications are being introduced after fifteen years of research into cross-language information retrieval, question answering, statistical machine translation and named entity recognition. Previous workshops on this topic have focused on research and small- scale applications. The focus of this workshop was on technology transfer from research to applications and on what future research needs to be done which facilitates MLIA in an increasingly connected multilingual world

Prospects for the prevention of free radical disease, regarding cancer and cardiovascular disease

Free radicals may be involved in the aetiology of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. In epidemiological studies poor plasma levels of all essential antioxidants are associated with increased relative risks; in particular, low levels of carotene and vitamin E with the risk of cancer and ischemic heart disease, respectively. The studies suggest that for optimal synergistic protection the plasma antioxidant levels should simultaneously exceed the threshold values of 28-30 μmol/l lipid-standardized vitamin E, 40-50 μmol/l vitamin C, 0.4-0.5 (μmol/l carotene and 2.2-2.8 μmol/l lipid-standardized vitamin A. However the preventive efficacy of an optional antioxidant status is still to be proven in randomized intervention trials. Although these antioxidant micronutrients may be the primary protective components of vegetable-rich ‘preventive' diets, the potentials of other plant components await exploration, eg carotenoids other than β-carotene, bioflavonoids and oxygen-sensitive B-vitamin

The Theological Thinking of María Zambrano: Letters from La Pièce. Correspondence with Agustín Andreu

Se descubre de modo sobresaliente la búsqueda del Espíritu como fundamento del conocimiento, por lo que se podría llegar a decir que esta vivencia contribuye y da pie al rechazo del racionalismo en su filosofía y también del materialismo en su concepción de la persona, concebida como un ser espiritualIn this collection of letters a theological reflection stands out in which Maria Zambrano reflects upon some of the problems she has always been interested in: Christianity and Mysticism, with special emphasis on the divine processions including that of the Holy Spirit, the Incarnation of Christ, the Virgin Mary, the liturgy and the reception of the Second Vatican Council, among other personal experiences. In these letters the pursuit of the Holy Spirit as the foundation of knowledge is remarkably noticeable, so that it could be argued that this experience contributes and gives rise to the rejection both of rationalism in her philosophy as well as of materialism in her concept of the human person, which is considered as a spiritual bein

Using CART to Detect Multiple Change Points in the Mean for Large Sample

SSB Research Report number 12 (preprint) The original preprint can be found at http://genome.jouy.inra.fr/ssb/preprint/A procedure is provided to detect multiple change-points in the mean for very large Gaussian signals. From an algorithmical point of view, visiting all possible configurations of change points cannot be performed on large samples. The proposed procedure runs CART to reduce the number of configurations of change-points by keeping the relevant ones, and then runs an exhaustive search on these change-points in order to obtain a convenient configuration. A simulation study compares the different algorithms in terms of theoretical performance and in terms of computational time
