Sourcing founders for species restoration projects can be problematic, especially when using rare or endangered animals. Harvesting from small natural populations could be detrimental to those populations. A possible solution is to use captive-bred founders as this would reduce harvesting pressure on natural source populations. In the summer of 2013, a combination of captive-bred and wild-sourced Duvaucel’s geckos (Hoplodactylus duvaucelii) were released on two islands in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. To assess the suitability of captive-bred founders for species restoration projects, short-term survival, condition, reproductive performance, dispersal and activity patterns, and habitat use were investigated using mark-recapture surveys and radio telemetry over a 12 month period following the release, and comparisons were made between captive-bred and wild-sourced geckos. Captive-bred geckos were encountered more often than wild geckos one year after the release, and had greater increases in body condition index. They also had better overall health, but more partial tail losses. Gravid females from both groups were encountered during the first post-release breeding season and at least 50% of juveniles were encountered alive during the first year. Less than 15% of radio tracked geckos moved further than 100 m away from their release locations. The size of activity areas reduced with time after release. Areas of activity were largest for wild geckos during both radio tracking periods and were much larger than the activity areas of captive-bred geckos during the second radio tracking period. Hoplodactylus duvaucelii did not appear to utilise available habitats randomly and rearing history did not appear to influence habitat use. Flax had considerably high use during both radio tracking periods. Overall, captive-bred geckos performed similarly to their wild counterparts, demonstrating that they are suitable for species restoration projects

Professional wrestling as culturally embedded spectacles in five core countries: the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Mexico and Japan

Culturally embedded spectacle is a unique conceptual framework developed for this paper to explain the continuity of professional wrestling in five core countries or territories. The main factors are: a continuous history, national television exposure during the post World War II era, larger-than-life ‘faces’ during this timeframe, extensive independent federations and celebrating the past

Determination of morphologic and volumetric change, Peyto Glacier, Alberta, 1966-1989

During the summer months of July and August 1989, approximately 23 years after a photogrammetric survey on August 22, 1966, Peyto Glacier, a glacier selected for study during the International Hydrologic Decade (IHD) 1965-74, was re-surveyed using terrestrial geodetic surveying techniques. The volumetric and morphologic change of Peyto Glacier, Alberta from 1966 to 1989 is estimated through a combined application of digital cartometry, digital geodetic survey and Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) digital terrain modeling and analysis. Changes in glacial volume, areal extent, teriminus position, percentage basin glaciation, slope, and aspect for the 23 year interval are shown. Additionally, a 1:10000 contour map of the 1989 Peyto Glacier is presented. The volumetric change of Peyto Glacier is estimated to be -154.6 10^6m3 and compares favourably with the figure of -155.3 106m3 obtained through a directly measured accumulation/ablation stake network. The surface area of Peyto Glacier 1989 is estimated at 12.04 km2, a loss of 1.07 km2 from the 1966 surface area of 13.11 km2. The terminus of Peyto Glacier has retreated 592 m. Significant ablation of the glacier surface below approximately 2600 masl has occurred. A maximum of 86 m vertical loss was measured in the ablation zone. Slope and aspect analysis reveals that although significant ablation has occurred below 2600 masl, surface geometry has remained remarkably similar. This is also true of the hypsometry which, with the exception of the area below 2100 masl, shows areal distributions have changed little over the twenty-three years. Despite complications encountered with aspects of the surface data sets, examination of the methods applied suggests that in situ digital geodetic surveying in concert with TIN DTM analysis is an efficient, reliable, and relatively inexpensive means of assessing glacial morphologic and volumetric change
