New selection rules for resonant Raman scattering on quantum wires
The bosonisation technique is used to calculate the resonant Raman spectrum
of a quantum wire with two electronic sub-bands occupied. Close to resonance,
the cross section at frequencies in the region of the inter sub-band
transitions shows distinct peaks in parallel polarisation of the incident and
scattered light that are signature of collective higher order spin density
excitations. This is in striking contrast to the conventional selection rule
for non-resonant Raman scattering according to which spin modes can appear only
in perpendicular polarisation. We predict a new selection rule for the
excitations observed near resonance, namely that, apart from charge density
excitations, only spin modes with positive group velocities can appear as peaks
in the spectra in parallel configuration close to resonance. The results are
consistent with all of the presently available experimental data.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Experiments on Lunar Core Composition: Phase Equilibrium Analysis of A Multi-Element (Fe-Ni-S-C) System
Previous geochemical and geophysical experiments have proposed the presence of a small, metallic lunar core, but its composition is still being investigated. Knowledge of core composition can have a significant effect on understanding the thermal history of the Moon, the conditions surrounding the liquid-solid or liquid-liquid field, and siderophile element partitioning between mantle and core. However, experiments on complex bulk core compositions are very limited. One limitation comes from numerous studies that have only considered two or three element systems such as Fe-S or Fe-C, which do not supply a comprehensive understanding for complex systems such as Fe-Ni-S-Si-C. Recent geophysical data suggests the presence of up to 6% lighter elements. Reassessments of Apollo seismological analyses and samples have also shown the need to acquire more data for a broader range of pressures, temperatures, and compositions. This study considers a complex multi-element system (Fe-Ni-S-C) for a relevant pressure and temperature range to the Moon's core conditions
Economy-wide and distributional impacts of an oil price shock on the south African economy
As crude oil prices reach new highs, there is renewed concern about how external shocks will affect growth and poverty in developing countries. This paper describes a macro-micro framework for examining the structural and distributional consequences of a significant external shock-an increase in the world price of oil-on the South African economy. The authors merge results from a highly disaggregative computable general equilibrium model and a micro-simulation analysis of earnings and occupational choice based on socio-demographic characteristics of the household. The model provides changes in employment, wages, and prices that are used in the micro-simulation. The analysis finds that a 125 percent increase in the price of crude oil and refined petroleum reduces employment and GDP by approximately 2 percent, and reduces household consumption by approximately 7 percent. The oil price shock tends to increase the disparity between rich and poor. The adverse impact of the oil price shock is felt by the poorer segment of the formal labor market in the form of declining wages and increased unemployment. Unemployment hits mostly low and medium-skilled workers in the services sector. High-skilled households, on average, gain from the oil price shock. Their income rises and their spending basket is less skewed toward food and other goods that are most affected by changes in oil prices.Economic Theory&Research,,Labor Policies,Markets and Market Access,Access to Finance
Glassy Dynamics of Protein Folding
A coarse grained model of a random polypeptide chain, with only discrete
torsional degrees of freedom and Hookean springs connecting pairs of
hydrophobic residues is shown to display stretched exponential relaxation under
Metropolis dynamics at low temperatures with the exponent , in
agreement with the best experimental results. The time dependent correlation
functions for fluctuations about the native state, computed in the Gaussian
approximation for real proteins, have also been found to have the same
functional form. Our results indicate that the energy landscape exhibits
universal features over a very large range of energies and is relatively
independent of the specific dynamics.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, multicolumn, including 5 figures; larger

Sampling constrained probability distributions using Spherical Augmentation
Statistical models with constrained probability distributions are abundant in
machine learning. Some examples include regression models with norm constraints
(e.g., Lasso), probit, many copula models, and latent Dirichlet allocation
(LDA). Bayesian inference involving probability distributions confined to
constrained domains could be quite challenging for commonly used sampling
algorithms. In this paper, we propose a novel augmentation technique that
handles a wide range of constraints by mapping the constrained domain to a
sphere in the augmented space. By moving freely on the surface of this sphere,
sampling algorithms handle constraints implicitly and generate proposals that
remain within boundaries when mapped back to the original space. Our proposed
method, called {Spherical Augmentation}, provides a mathematically natural and
computationally efficient framework for sampling from constrained probability
distributions. We show the advantages of our method over state-of-the-art
sampling algorithms, such as exact Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, using several
examples including truncated Gaussian distributions, Bayesian Lasso, Bayesian
bridge regression, reconstruction of quantized stationary Gaussian process, and
LDA for topic modeling.Comment: 41 pages, 13 figure
A review of implant provision for hypodontia patients within a Scottish referral centre
Background: Implant treatment to replace congenitally missing teeth often involves multidisciplinary input in a secondary care environment. High quality patient care requires an in-depth knowledge of treatment requirements.
Aim: This service review aimed to determine treatment needs, efficiency of service and outcomes achieved in hypodontia patients. It also aimed to determine any specific difficulties encountered in service provision, and suggest methods to overcome these.
Methods: Hypodontia patients in the Unit of Periodontics of the Scottish referral centre under consideration, who had implant placement and fixed restoration, or review completed over a 31 month period, were included. A standardised data collection form was developed and completed with reference to the patient's clinical record. Information was collected with regard to: the indication for implant treatment and its extent; the need for, complexity and duration of orthodontic treatment; the need for bone grafting and the techniques employed and indicators of implant success.
Conclusion: Implant survival and success rates were high for those patients reviewed. Incidence of biological complications compared very favourably with the literature
Kritisi Desain Pseudo Elastis Pada Bangunan Beraturan 6- Dan 10- Lantai Dengan Denah Persegi Di Wilayah 6 Peta Gempa Indonesia
