    Some current measurements in the Sargasso Sea

    Also published as: Deep-Sea Research 12 (1965): 805-814Long-term current measurements at depths of 50 and 100m obtained with Richardson current meters at two deep-water moorings south of Bermuda are reported. The records are dominated by anticyclonic rotations which appear and degenerate, possibly in response to the passage of storms. Spectral analysis of the records indicates that this motion has a period of 24 hours at a depth of 50 m, and 25·3 hours at a depth of 100m. No explanation is given to account for this difference in period over a 50-m separation. Both records indicate the existence of semidiurnal tidal motion.     Development of the health and economic consequences of smoking interactive model

    Objective-To describe the health and economic consequences of smoking model, a user friendly, web based tool, designed to estimate the health and economic outcomes associated with smoking and the benefits of smoking cessation. Results-An overview of the development of the model equations and user interface is given, and data from the UK are presented as an example of the model outputs. These results show that a typical smoking cessation strategy costs approximately pound 1200 per life year saved and pound 22 000 per death averted. Conclusions-The model successfully captures the complexity required to model smoking behaviour and associated mortality, morbidity, and health care costs. Furthermore, the interface provides the results in a simple and flexible way so as to be useful to a variety of audiences and to simulate a variety of smoking cessation methods

    Very high energy gamma rays from the Crab Nebula

    Observations of the Crab pulsar using the atmospheric Cerenkov technique were conducted for 22 hours. The light curve obtained shows a single peak at approximately the position of the expected main peak with a significance level of 3.2 sigma. The pulsed flux above 200 GeV is 2.5 + or - 0.8 x 10 to the 11th power cm(-2)s(-1)

    Unusual High-Energy Phenomenology of Lorentz-Invariant Noncommutative Field Theories

    It has been suggested that one may construct a Lorentz-invariant noncommutative field theory by extending the coordinate algebra to additional, fictitious coordinates that transform nontrivially under the Lorentz group. Integration over these coordinates in the action produces a four-dimensional effective theory with Lorentz invariance intact. Previous applications of this approach, in particular to a specific construction of noncommutative QED, have been studied only in a low-momentum approximation. Here we discuss Lorentz-invariant field theories in which the relevant physics can be studied without requiring an expansion in the inverse scale of noncommutativity. Qualitatively, we find that tree-level scattering cross sections are dramatically suppressed as the center-of-mass energy exceeds the scale of noncommutativity, that cross sections that are isotropic in the commutative limit can develop a pronounced angular dependence, and that nonrelativistic potentials (for example, the Coloumb potential) become nonsingular at the origin. We consider a number of processes in noncommutative QED that may be studied at a future linear collider. We also give an example of scattering via a four-fermion operator in which the noncommutative modifications of the interaction can unitarize the tree-level amplitude, without requiring any other new physics in the ultraviolet.Comment: 24 pages LaTeX, 4 eps figures (v2: reference added, v3: minor clarifications

    The Taguchi methodology which may be applied as off-line quality control in the product design stage or, as on-line quality control during production is presented. As an off-line quality improvement strategy, it is a preventive measure at the product or manufacturing systems design stage which has the capability of making the product design robust. As an on-line quality improvement strategy, it assists in diagnosing the cause of the variation during production for the purpose of either eliminating the cause of variation or redesigning the product/process to make the product robust against the effect of the variation. The results of a case study presented using a computer program developed show that the Taguchi methodology can lead to substantial improvements

    Energy bands, conductance and thermoelectric power for ballistic electrons in a nanowire with spin-orbit interaction

    We calculated the effects of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) on the energy bands, ballistic conductance and the electron-diffusion thermoelectric power of a nanowire by varying the temperature, electron density and width of the wire. The potential barriers at the edges of the wire are assumed to be very high. A consequence of the boundary conditions used in this model is determined by the energy band structure, resulting in wider plateaus when the electron density is increased due to larger energy-level separation as the higher subbands are occupied by electrons. The nonlinear dependence of the transverse confinement on position with respect to the well center excludes the "pole-like feature" in the conductance which is obtained when a harmonic potential is employed for confinement. At low temperature, the electron diffusion thermoelectric power increases linearly with T but deviates from the linear behavior for large values of T.Comment: Updated corrected version of the original submissio

    Lentiviral manipulation of gene expression in human adult and embryonic stem cells

    Human stem cells could revolutionize the field of medicine by providing a diverse range of cell types for tissue replacement therapies and drug discovery. To achieve this goal, genetic tools need to be optimized and developed for controlling and manipulating stem cells ex vivo. Here we describe a lentiviral delivery system capable of high infection rates in human mesenchymal and embryonic stem cells. The lentiviral backbone was modified to express mono- and bi-cistronic transgenes and was also used to deliver short hairpin ribonucleic acid for specific silencing of gene expression in human stem cells. We show that lentiviral transduction can be used to alter gene expression without altering the genes' ability to differentiate in vitro. These vectors will enable rapid analysis of gene function in stem cells and permit the generation of knock-in / knock-out models of human disease in the rapidly developing field of gene therapy
