Migration and Ethnobotanical Practices: The Case of Tifey Among Haitian Immigrants in Cuba

Ethnobotanical knowledge and practices are dynamic and they change as they are transferred and appropriated by people who are adapting to new surroundings and changing environments. Using tifey, a multispecies drink, as a case study, we discuss the changes that emigration brought about related to tifey, and the processes that determined these changes. Tifey is a Haitian drink prepared by soaking Artemisia absinthium and other plants in rum or aguardiente. It probably had its origin in the adoption of the absinthe-based liquor used by French settlers and troops during the colonial period. Haitians progressively added culturally relevant flavorings and medicinal plants to this drink, and differentiated its production and use for medicinal, medicinal food, ritual ( religious and social), and economic purposes. When Haitians migrated to Cuba, they brought tifey with them, but over the course of the twentieth century its use declined and its composition changed due to sociocultural factors such as the dissolution of Haitian settlements, and to ecological factors such as difficulty in cultivation and/or procurement of A. absinthium in the new environment

We classify the affine connections on compact orientable surfaces for which the pseudogroup of local isometries acts transitively. We prove that such a connection is either torsion-free and flat, the Levi-Civita connection of a Riemannian metric of constant curvature or the quotient of a translation-invariant connection in the plane

Bioinspired snapping-claw apparatus to study hydrodynamic cavitation effects on the corrosion of metallic samples

A creative low-cost and compact mechanical device that mimics the rapid closure of the pistol shrimp claw was used to conduct electrochemical experiments, in order to study the effects of hydrodynamic cavitation on the corrosion of aluminum and steel samples. Current-time curves show significant changes associated with local variations in dissolved O2 concentration, cavitation-induced erosion and changes in the nature of the surface corrosion products

El desempleo y la inflación en México

El objetivo del trabajo consistió en analizar algunas variables macroeconómicas que afectan a la inflación y al desempleo, 1980-2015, se elaboró un modelo de regresión lineal múltiple. Estadísticamente resultaron altamente significativos el tipo de cambio, y la tasa de interés. La elasticidad del desempleo con respecto al PIB y a la IED fue de: 3.44x10-6, -1.24x10-4, respectivamente, lo que indicó que al aumentar en 10.0% cada una de éstas, el desempleo varía en muy poca proporción. Para la inflación con la tasa de interés fue 1.4% ante un incremento del 10.0% de ésta, la tasa de inflación aumentara en 14.0%
