Destabilization by noise of tranverse perturbations to heteroclinic cycles: a simple model and an example from dynamo theory
We show that transverse perturbations from structurally stable heteroclinic cycles can be destabilized by surprisingly small amounts of noise, even when each individual fixed point of the cycle is stable to transverse modes. A condition that favours this process is that the linearization of the dynamics in the transverse direction be characterized by a non-normal matrix. The phenomenon is illustrated by a simple two-dimensional switching model and by a simulation of a convectively driven dynamo

A Grammar Compression Algorithm based on Induced Suffix Sorting
We introduce GCIS, a grammar compression algorithm based on the induced
suffix sorting algorithm SAIS, introduced by Nong et al. in 2009. Our solution
builds on the factorization performed by SAIS during suffix sorting. We
construct a context-free grammar on the input string which can be further
reduced into a shorter string by substituting each substring by its
correspondent factor. The resulting grammar is encoded by exploring some
redundancies, such as common prefixes between suffix rules, which are sorted
according to SAIS framework. When compared to well-known compression tools such
as Re-Pair and 7-zip, our algorithm is competitive and very effective at
handling repetitive string regarding compression ratio, compression and
decompression running time

Magnetic field dependence of charge stripe order in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x~1/8)
We have carried out a detailed investigation of the magnetic field dependence
of charge ordering in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x~1/8) utilizing high-resolution x-ray
scattering. We find that the charge order correlation length increases as the
magnetic field greater than ~5T is applied in the superconducting phase (T=2K).
The observed unusual field dependence of the charge order correlation length
suggests that the static charge stripe order competes with the superconducting
ground state in this sample.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Contagion! The BBC Four Pandemic - The model behind the documentary.
To mark the centenary of the 1918 influenza pandemic, the broadcasting network BBC have put together a 75-min documentary called 'Contagion! The BBC Four Pandemic'. Central to the documentary is a nationwide citizen science experiment, during which volunteers in the United Kingdom could download and use a custom mobile phone app called BBC Pandemic, and contribute their movement and contact data for a day. As the 'maths team', we were asked to use the data from the app to build and run a model of how a pandemic would spread in the UK. The headline results are presented in the TV programme. Here, we document in detail how the model works, and how we shaped it according the incredibly rich data coming from the BBC Pandemic app. We have barely scratched the depth of the volunteer data available from the app. The work presented in this article had the sole purpose of generating a single detailed simulation of a pandemic influenza-like outbreak in the UK. When the BBC Pandemic app has completed its collection period, the vast dataset will be made available to the scientific community (expected early 2019). It will take much more time and input from a broad range of researchers to fully exploit all that this dataset has to offer. But here at least we were able to harness some of the power of the BBC Pandemic data to contribute something which we hope will capture the interest and engagement of a broad audience
