The Portability of New Immigrants' Human Capital: Language, Education and Occupational Matching

    Get PDF
The implications of human capital portability -- including interactions between education, language skills and pre- and post-immigration occupational matching -- for earnings are explored for new immigrants to Canada. Given the importance of occupation-specific skills, as a precursor we also investigate occupational mobility and observe convergence toward the occupational skill distribution of the domestic population, although four years after landing immigrants remain less likely have a high skilled job. Immigrants who are able to match their source and host country occupations obtain higher earnings. However, surprisingly, neither matching nor language skills have any impact on the return to pre-immigration work experience, which is observed to be statistically significantly negative. Crucially, English language skills are found to have an appreciable direct impact on earnings, and to mediate the return to pre-immigration education but not labour market experience.Immigration, human capital portability, occupation, education, language

Prion diseases are efficiently transmitted by blood transfusion in sheep

The emergence of variant Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, following on from the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic, led to concerns about the potential risk of iatrogenic transmission of disease by blood transfusion and the introduction of costly control measures to protect blood supplies. We previously reported preliminary data demonstrating the transmission of BSE and natural scrapie by blood transfusion in sheep. The final results of this experiment, reported here, give unexpectedly high transmission rates by transfusion of 36% for BSE and 43% for scrapie. A proportion of BSE-infected tranfusion recipients (3 of 8) survived for up to 7 years without showing clinical signs of disease. The majority of transmissions resulted from blood collected from donors at more than 50% of the estimated incubation period. The high transmission rates and relatively short and consistent incubation periods in clinically positive recipients suggest that infectivity titers in blood were substantial and/or that blood transfusion is an efficient method of transmission. This experiment has established the value of using sheep as a model for studying transmission of variant Creutzfeld-Jakob disease by blood products in humans. (Blood. 2008; 112: 4739-4745

Natural linewidth analysis of d-band photoemission from Ag(110)

We report a high-resolution angle-resolved study of photoemission linewidths observed for Ag(110). A careful data analysis yields kresolvedupperlimitsfortheinverseinelasticlifetimesof-resolved upper limits for the inverse inelastic lifetimes of dholesattheXpointofthebulkbandstructure.Attheupper-holes at the X-point of the bulk band structure. At the upper dbandedgetheholelifetimeis-band edge the hole-lifetime is \tau_h \geq 22 fs,i.e.morethanoneorderofmagnitudelargerthanpredictedforafreeelectrongas.Followingcalculationsforfs, i.e. more than one order of magnitude larger than predicted for a free-electron gas. Following calculations for d$-hole dynamics in Cu (I.\ Campillo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., in press) we interpret the lifetime enhancement by a small scattering cross-section of dd- and spsp-states below the Fermi level. With increasing distance to EFE_F the dd-hole lifetimes get shorter because of the rapidly increasing density of d-states and contributions of intra-dd-band scattering processes, but remain clearly above free-electron-model predictions.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

Television Series and Beyond: Serial Narratives and their Potenzial for the Production of Fan-Fiction

The characteristics of new television series such as multilayered characters and complex narratives open multiple possibilities for a more intense and in-depth reception. One of the probably most illustrative results of these more profound viewer negotiations are fan fictions. The notion of fan fiction refers to fan-created texts, which use character characteristics and the settings from the source text, transforming them in order to tell their own story. Certain gaps in the source text are often considered to be popular starting points for these narratives, which provide the opportunity for fans to negotiate the storylines provided by the series in their own terms. These stories, which are mostly published on specific internet websites, enable the authors to address dissatisfaction with the source product, to relate the story to one’s own knowledge repertoire and to negotiate individually important topics through an ensemble of well-known characters. Furthermore, the possibility to comment the posted fan fictions on the website often triggers extensive discussions of the topics mentioned in the stories by other fans

A novel, resistance-linked ovine PrP variant and its equivalent mouse variant modulate the in vitro cell-free conversion of rPrP to PrPres

    Get PDF
Prion diseases are associated with the conversion of the normal cellular prion protein, PrPc, to the abnormal, disease-associated form, PrPSc. This conversion can be mimicked in vitro by using a cell-free conversion assay. It has recently been shown that this assay can be modified to use bacterial recombinant PrP as substrate and mimic the in vivo transmission characteristics of rodent scrapie. Here, it is demonstrated that the assay replicates the ovine polymorphism barriers of scrapie transmission. In addition, the recently identified ovine PrP variant ARL168Q, which is associated with resistance of sheep to experimental BSE, modulates the cell-free conversion of ovine recombinant PrP to PrPres by three different types of PrPSc, reducing conversion efficiencies to levels similar to those of the ovine resistance-associated ARR variant. Also, the equivalent variant in mice (L164) is resistant to conversion by 87V scrapie. Together, these results suggest a significant role for this position and/or amino acid in conversion

Microscopic measurement of the linear compressibilities of two-dimensional fatty acid mesophases

The linear compressibility of two-dimensional fatty acid mesophases has determined by grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. Surface pressure vs molecular area isotherms were reconstructed from these measurements, and the linear compressibility (relative distortion along a given direction for isotropic applied stress) was determined both in the sample plane and in a plane normal to the aliphatic chain director (transverse plane). The linear compressibilities range over two orders of magnitude from 0.1 to 10 m/N and are distributed depending on their magnitude in 4 different sets which we are able to associate with different molecular mechanisms. The largest compressibilities (10m/N) are observed in the tilted phases. They are apparently independent of the chain length and could be related to the reorganization of the headgroup hydrogen-bounded network, whose role should be revalued. Intermediate compressibilities are observed in phases with quasi long-range order (directions normal to the molecular tilt in L_2 or L_2' phases, S phase), and could be related to the ordering of these phases. The lowest compressibilities are observed in the solid untilted CS phase and for 1 direction of the S and L_2'' phases. They are similar to the compressibility of crystalline polymers and correspond to the interactions between methyl groups in the crystal. Finally, negative compressibilities are observed in the transverse plane for L_2' and L_2'' phases and can be traced to subtle reorganizations upon untilting.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figure

The Economic Return on New Immigrants' Human Capital: the Impact of Occupational Matching

    Get PDF
Using a data set that provides information on source country employment, we examine the effect of source and host country occupational matching on earnings and the economic rate of return to the foreign human capital of immigrants in Canada. Examining occupational distributions we find that immigrants converge very quickly to the skill distribution of the Canadian population in terms of the main job worked, although four years after landing they are still below the source country distribution. We also find that for a large proportion of immigrants, their intended occupation differs from their source country occupation. Although immigrants who are able to match their source and host country occupations obtain higher earnings, successful occupational matching does not have any impact on the return to foreign potential work experience. However, immigrants who match their source and host country occupations do have a higher return to schooling, particularly for females.Immigrants, Occupational Matching, Human Capital, Canada
