Influence of GaInP ordering on the electronic quality of concentrator solar cells
The ordering phenomenon produces a reduction in the band gap of the GaInP material. Though a drawback for many optoelectronic applications, ordering can be used as an additional degree of material and device engineering freedom. The performance of the record efficiency GaInP/GaAs/Ge multijunction solar cells depends on the quality and design of the GaInP top cell, which can be affected also by ordering. The tradeoff existing between band gap and minority carrier properties, and the possibility of creating a back surface field (BSF) structure based on an order–disorder GaInP heterostructure makes the study of the ordering appealing for solar cell applications. In this work, the ordering dependency with the growth conditions and substrate orientation is studied. The results obtained are presented to enrich and extend the data available in the literature. Then the properties of order–disorder GaInP heterostructures are assessed by using them as BSF in GaInP concentrator solar cells. The external quantum efficiency (EQE) shows a good behavior of these BSF layers, but unexpectedly poor electronic quality in the active layers. Although the exact origin of this problem remains to be known, it is attributed to traps introduced by the ordered/disordered domains matrix or growth native defects. EQE measurements with bias light show a recovery of the minority carrier properties, presumably due to the saturation of the traps
Immittance Matching for Multi-dimensional Open-system Photonic Crystals
An electromagnetic (EM) Bloch wave propagating in a photonic crystal (PC) is
characterized by the immittance (impedance and admittance) of the wave. The
immittance is used to investigate transmission and reflection at a surface or
an interface of the PC. In particular, the general properties of immittance are
useful for clarifying the wave propagation characteristics. We give a general
proof that the immittance of EM Bloch waves on a plane in infinite one- and
two-dimensional (2D) PCs is real when the plane is a reflection plane of the PC
and the Bloch wavevector is perpendicular to the plane. We also show that the
pure-real feature of immittance on a reflection plane for an infinite
three-dimensional PC is good approximation based on the numerical calculations.
The analytical proof indicates that the method used for immittance matching is
extremely simplified since only the real part of the immittance function is
needed for analysis without numerical verification. As an application of the
proof, we describe a method based on immittance matching for qualitatively
evaluating the reflection at the surface of a semi-infinite 2D PC, at the
interface between a semi-infinite slab waveguide (WG) and a semi-infinite 2D PC
line-defect WG, and at the interface between a semi-infinite channel WG and a
semi-infinite 2D PC slab line-defect WG.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Linear and Second-order Optical Response of the III-V Mono-layer Superlattices
We report the first fully self-consistent calculations of the nonlinear
optical properties of superlattices. The materials investigated are mono-layer
superlattices with GaP grown on the the top of InP, AlP and GaAs (110)
substrates. We use the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method
within the generalized gradient approximation to obtain the frequency dependent
dielectric tensor and the second-harmonic-generation susceptibility. The effect
of lattice relaxations on the linear optical properties are studied. Our
calculations show that the major anisotropy in the optical properties is the
result of strain in GaP. This anisotropy is maximum for the superlattice with
maximum lattice mismatch between the constituent materials. In order to
differentiate the superlattice features from the bulk-like transitions an
improvement over the existing effective medium model is proposed. The
superlattice features are found to be more pronounced for the second-order than
the linear optical response indicating the need for full supercell calculations

Analysis of Cs Removal Process from Phytoliths by FIB-TOF-SIMS
We have been conducting research on the development and analysis of FIB-TOF-SIMS (Focused Ion Beam Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) instrumentation. As a part of this research, we are also working on the content of research for decontamination activities in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. In our previous study, we confirmed that Cs is adsorbed on phytolith, which is a silicate material contained in plants. In this study, we analyzed the desorption process of Cs from plant opal using FIB-TOF-SIMS from the viewpoint of heat treatment
Efficient synthesis and hydrolysis of cyclic oxalate esters of glycols
Based on the mechanism postulated for the formation of the cyclic carbonates 3 in the reactions of glycols 1 with oxalyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine, we present here three efficient syntheses of the cyclic oxalates 2 of various glycols 1 by controlling the formation of 3: replacement of the base by pyridine markedly diminishes yields of 3 in all reactions, realizing dramatic reversals of the product ratios in the reactions with the (R*,R*)-compounds 1g-i, q, r and pinacol (1k); although considerable amounts of the oxalate polymers are formed in the reactions with some (R*,S*)-glycols, this drawback can be removed by the use of 2,4,6-collidine instead of pyridine; 1,1′-oxalyldiimidazole is useful for the synthesis of two selected cyclic oxalates 2e, f. The cyclic oxalates 2 other than trisubstituted and tetrasubstituted ones were found to be very reactive: kinetic studies on the hydrolysis of 1,4-dioxane-2,3-dione (2a) as well as its mono- and some selected 5,6-disubstituted derivatives 2 have revealed that they undergo hydrolysis 260-1500 times more rapidly than diethyl oxalate (12) in acetate buffer-acetonitrile (pH 5.69) at 25°C. Although the cyclic oxalate 2l from cis-1,2-cyclopentanediol (1l) was 1.5 times more reactive than 2a, it has been shown with other substrates that increasing number of the alkyl substituents decreases the rate of hydrolysis. On the contrary, the phenyl group was found to have somewhat accelerative effect. © 2002 Pharmaceutical Society of Japan
Enhancing Overland Flow Infiltration through Sustainable Well-Managed Thinning: Contour-Aligned Felled Log Placement in a Chamaecyparis obtusa Plantation
Contour felling is a restoration method used to decrease overland flow (OF) and soil erosion in the world. However, the impact of thinning and the placement of felled logs on OF remains inconclusive. Low ground cover and soil permeability promote OF in Chamaecyparis obtusa (Siebold et Zucc.) Endl plantations, making thinning a method for reducing runoff. We examined the relationship between OF and ground cover in a C. obtusa plantation in Japan. Event-based runoff was monitored in three plots from 2016 to 2021, with 40% thinning conducted in 2019. In plot T1, logs were randomly scattered, and, in T2, logs followed contour lines, while control plots stayed the same. After thinning, both treatment plots showed lower OF than the control plot. The ANCOVA test shows a significant slope reduction in treatment plots compared to the control plot from pre-thinning to post-thinning (T1: 0.67 to 0.26, T2: 0.66 to 0.12, p < 0.001, Tukey HSD test). However, in plot T2, OF remained stable for two years post-thinning, affirming the enduring effectiveness of contour-aligned log placement. This study backs the notion that aligning fallen logs with contour lines boosts long-term OF infiltration, supporting sustainable forest and soil management
