New results for the Inert Doublet Model
New results for the Inert Doublet Model (IDM) are discussed. It is very
special among the -symmetric 2HDMs, offering a good DM candidate. New
unitarity constraints were derived for the IDM and SM-like light Higgs boson
scenario in the Mixed Model.Comment: 7 pages, 3 eps figures. An error was found in calculations, which
modified conclusions for the Mixed Model. The current version contains
corrections described in Erratu
Water, Bison, and Horses: Natural Resources and Their Impacts on Native Raids and Relations in Late, Spanish Colonial New Mexico
During the Spanish colonial period in New Mexico’s history, the area became a place where cultural, social, and economic mixing of various Native American groups and Spanish settlers frequently occurred. Certain peoples, such as the Pueblo, lived in an agrarian society and worked in close proximity to the Spanish. Other peoples, such as the Comanche, Apache, and Navajo, developed hostile relationships with these foreigners, and their raids on the Spanish, Pueblo, and each other changed the dynamic of their settlements. Sources from Spanish and Church officials, along with travel logs, discuss the effects of natural resources, such as water and animals – including the bison and horse – on the causes of raids and subsequent effects these hostilities had on Spanish-Indian relations. The importance of water created a strong desire for nomadic societies to obtain and maintain horse-herds and for settled societies to create tight communities near water sources. The need for horses created a cycle of raiding, motivated by the need and competition for natural resources
K-Shell Photoabsorption Studies of the Carbon Isonuclear Sequence
K-shell photoabsorption cross sections for the isonuclear C I - C IV ions
have been computed using the R-matrix method. Above the K-shell threshold, the
present results are in good agreement with the independent-particle results of
Reilman & Manson (1979). Below threshold, we also compute the strong 1s -> np
absorption resonances with the inclusion of important spectator Auger
broadening effects. For the lowest 1s -> 2p, 3p resonances, comparisons to
available C II, C III, and C IV experimental results show good agreement in
general for the resonance strengths and positions, but unexplained
discrepancies exist. Our results also provide detailed information on the C I
K-shell photoabsorption cross section including the strong resonance features,
since very limited laboratory experimental data exist. The resultant R-matrix
cross sections are then used to model the Chandra X-ray absorption spectrum of
the blazar Mkn 421
The Melting ‘Crown of the Continent’: Visual History of Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park (GNP), located in northwest Montana, US, was signed into existence on 11 May 1910 by then President William Howard Taft. Conservationist George Bird Grinnell was instrumental in lobbying for the park’s creation and negotiated the sale with the Blackfeet Indians. As an editor of the outdoor magazine Field and Stream, Grinnell learned about the region from writer James Willard Schultz and made his first visit there in 1885. Enticed and amazed by the glaciers of the area, the high Rocky Mountain alpine terrain, and the flora and fauna that thrived here, Grinnell advocated for the creation of the park, nicknaming it the “Crown of the Continent.”
Grinnell recognized glaciers as a geological wonder. As historian Gerald Diettert records in his 1992 book, Grinnell called the glaciers the “jewels” in the crown. Setting aside land to enjoy the glaciers seemed like a logical means to conserve the landscapes and ecosystems that they supported. Yet today, just about a hundred years from when the park was founded, the glaciers that form GNP’s snow-capped crown are close to extinction. [excerpt
Cmentarzysko ludności kultury pucharów lejkowatych w Marianowie, pow. koniński, stan. 17
The cemetery in Marianowo is the first non-megalithic burial site of the Funnel Beaker culture (hereinafter referred to as TRB from German Trichterbecherkultur), which has been recorded in eastern Wielkopolska. It is also the first one where biritual funeral rites have been adopted. Despite the poor evidence, it might be generally dated to the Classic Wiórek phase (III), and even to sub-phase IIIC of TRB. All six unearthed burials were of children, and the question of the reason why one of them was cremated provides a wide range of interpretative alternatives
The Kleczew enclave of the Kujavian long barrows. An overview
The article is aimed at general overview o f the long barrows o f the Funnel Beaker Culture discovered in the Kleczew vicinity, Konin district. These tombs are largely destroyed and thus presented analysis is mostly based upon archive materials. According to accounts from the early half of the 19th century, there were 150 tombs in this area. Only 22 of them can be localised at present. The article is aimed at general overview o f the long barrows o f the Funnel Beaker Culture discovered in the Kleczew vicinity, Konin district. The Friedel oscillations in the presence of transport currents
We investigate the Friedel oscillations in a nanowire coupled to two
macroscopic electrodes of different potentials. We show that the wave-length of
the density oscillations monotonically increases with the bias voltage, whereas
the amplitude and the spatial decay exponent of the oscillations remain intact.
Using the nonequilibrium Keldysh Green functions, we derive an explicit formula
that describes voltage dependence of the wave-length of the Friedel
oscillations.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, RevTe
Low x_{bj} DIS, QCD and Generalized Vector Dominance
We give a brief overview on the present status of Generalized Vector
Dominance as appplied to vector-meson production and the total photoabsorption
cross section in the region of small x_{bj}. We comment on how GVD originates
from QCD notions such as color transparency.Comment: 5 pages, latex, 2 postscript figure
