    Conatraints on ΔG\Delta G from Prompt Photon plus Jet Production at HERA-N\vec{N}

    The utility of prompt photon plus associated jet production for constraining the size and shape of the polarized gluon density of the proton ΔG\Delta G is examined at S=40\sqrt{S}=40 GeV, appropriate for the proposed HERA-N\vec{N} polarized pp\vec{p}\vec{p} collider experiment. The calculation is performed at next-to-leading order (O(ααs2\alpha\alpha_s^2)) in QCD. The reliability of the predictions are examined in some detail.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

    Associated Production of Charm and a Hard Photon

    The two particle inclusive cross section for the reaction p+pˉγ+c+Xp +\bar{p}\rightarrow \gamma + c + X is studied in perturbative quantum chromodynamics at order O(αs2)O(\alpha ^2_s), for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. Two different techniques are used in performing the phase-space integrals; the first is purely analytical, and the second is a combination of analytic and Monte Carlo integration methods. The second, more versatile technique facilitates imposition of photon isolation restrictions and other selections of relevance in experiments. Differential distributions are provided for various observables, and a comparison is made with preliminary data from the CDF collaboration.Comment: 6 pages.     Thin presentation of knots and lens spaces

    This paper concerns thin presentations of knots K in closed 3-manifolds M^3 which produce S^3 by Dehn surgery, for some slope gamma. If M does not have a lens space as a connected summand, we first prove that all such thin presentations, with respect to any spine of M have only local maxima. If M is a lens space and K has an essential thin presentation with respect to a given standard spine (of lens space M) with only local maxima, then we show that K is a 0-bridge or 1-bridge braid in M; furthermore, we prove the minimal intersection between K and such spines to be at least three, and finally, if the core of the surgery K_gamma yields S^3 by r-Dehn surgery, then we prove the following inequality: |r| <= 2g, where g is the genus of K_gamma.Comment: Published by Algebraic and Geometric Topology at http://www.maths.warwick.ac.uk/agt/AGTVol3/agt-3-23.abs.htm

    Lens space surgeries on A'Campo's divide knots

    It is proved that every knot in the major subfamilies of J. Berge's lens space surgery (i.e., knots yielding a lens space by Dehn surgery) is presented by an L-shaped (real) plane curve as a "divide knot" defined by N. A'Campo in the context of singularity theory of complex curves. For each knot given by Berge's parameters, the corresponding plane curve is constructed. The surgery coefficients are also considered. Such presentations support us to study each knot itself, and the relationship among the knots in the set of lens space surgeries.Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures.     The large NcN_c limit of four-point functions in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory from anti-de Sitter Supergravity

    We compute the imaginary part of scalar four-point functions in the AdS/CFT correspondence relevant to N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. Unitarity of the AdS supergravity demands that the imaginary parts of the correlation functions factorize into products of lower-point functions. We include the exchange diagrams for scalars as well as gravitons and find explicit expressions for the imaginary parts of these correlators. In momentum space these expressions contain only rational functions and logarithms of the kinematic invariants, in such a manner that the correlator is not a free-field result. The simplicity of these results, however, indicate the possibility of additional symmetry structures in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in the large NcN_c limit at strong effective coupling.     A test of genetic models for the evolutionary maintenance of same-sex sexual behaviour

    This study was supported by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) fellowships to NWB (NE/G014906/1, NE/L011255/1) and a NERC grant to NWB and MGR (NE/I016937/1).The evolutionary maintenance of same-sex sexual behaviour (SSB) has received increasing attention because it is perceived to be an evolutionary paradox. The genetic basis of SSB is almost wholly unknown in non-human animals, though this is key to understanding its persistence. Recent theoretical work has yielded broadly applicable predictions centred on two genetic models for SSB: overdominance and sexual antagonism. Using Drosophila melanogaster, we assayed natural genetic variation for male SSB and empirically tested predictions about the mode of inheritance and fitness consequences of alleles influencing its expression. We screened 50 inbred lines derived from a wild population for male–male courtship and copulation behaviour, and examined crosses between the lines for evidence of overdominance and antagonistic fecundity selection. Consistent variation among lines revealed heritable genetic variation for SSB, but the nature of the genetic variation was complex. Phenotypic and fitness variation was consistent with expectations under overdominance, although predictions of the sexual antagonism model were also supported. We found an unexpected and strong paternal effect on the expression of SSB, suggesting possible Y-linkage of the trait. Our results inform evolutionary genetic mechanisms that might maintain low but persistently observed levels of male SSB in D. melanogaster, but highlight a need for broader taxonomic representation in studies of its evolutionary causes.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Analytic Calculation of Prompt Photon plus Associated Heavy Flavor at Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

    Contributions through second order, O(αs2)O(\alpha ^2_s), in perturbative quantum chromodynamics are calculated analytically for inclusive associated production of a prompt photon and a charm quark at large values of transverse momentum in high energy hadron-hadron collisions. Seven partonic subprocesses contribute at order αs2\alpha^2_s. We find important corrections to the lowest order, O(αs)O(\alpha_s), subprocess cgγcc g \rightarrow \gamma c.
