    Calculation of low frequency vibrational resonances of submerged structures

    Numerical techniques for calculating the low frequency vibrational resonances of submerged structures are reviewed. Both finite element and boundary element approaches for calculating fully-coupled added mass matrices for use in NASTRAN analysis are described and illustrated. The finite element approach is implemented using existing capability in NASTRAN. The boundary element approach uses the NASHUA structural-acoustics program to compute the added mass matrix. The two procedures are compared to each other for the case of a submerged cylindrical shell with flat end closures. It is concluded that both procedures are capable of computing accurate submerged resonances and that the more elegant boundary element procedure is easier to use but may be more expensive computationally

    A renormalisation group method. II. Approximation by local polynomials

    This paper is the second in a series devoted to the development of a rigorous renormalisation group method for lattice field theories involving boson fields, fermion fields, or both. The method is set within a normed algebra N\mathcal{N} of functionals of the fields. In this paper, we develop a general method---localisation---to approximate an element of N\mathcal{N} by a local polynomial in the fields. From the point of view of the renormalisation group, the construction of the local polynomial corresponding to FF in N\mathcal{N} amounts to the extraction of the relevant and marginal parts of FF. We prove estimates relating FF and its corresponding local polynomial, in terms of the TϕT_{\phi} semi-norm introduced in part I of the series.Comment: 30 page

    Some factors affecting the distribution and apparent abundance of yellowfin and skipjack tuna in the Eastern Pacific Ocean

    ENGLISH: Since 1951, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission has been investigating the biology, ecology and population dynamics of the yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, and the skipjack tuna, Katsuwonus pelamis, in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Of particular importance has been the study of the effects of fishing and of fishery-independent factors on the abundance and distribution of these tunas. For yellowfin tuna there is, on the average, an inverse relationship between total fishing effort and apparent abundance (Schaefer, 1957a). For skipjack there is no evidence to suggest that fishing effort has ever been sufficiently intense to affect measurably the abundance (Schaefer, 1961). Rather, it appears that the year-to-year fluctuations in apparent abundance are independent of the activities of the fishing fleets. SPANISH: Desde 1951 la Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical se ha dedicado a la investigación de la biología, ecología y la dinámica de las poblaciones del atún aleta amarilla, Thunnus albacares, y del barrilete, Katsuwonus pelamis, en el Océano Pacífico del Este. De importancia especial ha sido el estudio de los efectos de la pesca y de los factores independientes de las pesquerías sobre la abundancia y la distribución de esos atunes. En cuanto al atún aleta amarilla, existe, en promedio, una relación inversa entre el esfuerzo total de pesca y la abundancia aparente (Schaefer, 1957a) . Con respecto al barrilete, no hay evidencia que haga pensar que el esfuerzo de pesca haya sido nunca lo suficientemente intenso como para afectar sensiblemente la abundancia (Schaefer, 1961). Más bien parece que las fluctuaciones de un año a otro en su abundancia aparente, son independientes de las actividades de las flotas pesqueras

    Comparison of 30 day integrations with and without interactive clouds

    A cloud radiation interaction parameterization package has recently been incorporated into a global spectral General Circulation Model (GCM) used for extended range prediction studies at GFDL. The elements of this package are summarized. Analysis of the time mean radiative and dynamical responses suggests that cloud radiation interaction has a favorable impact, overall, on systematic errors. The possible relevance of this sensitivity study to FIRE is mentioned
