Giving forgotten groups and individuals a place in history is in many ways the bread and butter of the historian’s work. But since some individuals have left so few traces, it becomes necessary to compensate for a lack of sources when drawing their portrait. This article will question the virtual absence of Sister Catherine Demers from the collective and institutional memory while shedding some light on the role played by this seamstress who spent almost half a century among the Sisters of Charity of the General Hospital of Montreal (the Grey Nuns)

Household labour supply and the marriage market in the UK, 1991-2008

We document changes in labour supply, wage and education by gender and marital status using the British Household Panel Survey, 1991-2008, and seek to disentangle the main channels behind these changes. To this end, we use a version of Goussé et al. (2016)'s search-matching model of the marriage market with labour supply, which does not use information on home production time inputs. We derive conditions under which the model is identified. We estimate different parameters for each year. This allows us to quantify how much of the changes in labour supply, wage and education by gender and marital status depends on changes in the preferences for leisure of men and women and how much depends on changes in homophily

Study of the goat production system and the quality of milk produced in the Sierra Norte of Seville (Spain)

The objective of this study is to determine the situation of semi-extensive goat farms in the Sierra Norte of Seville (Spain) related to the bacteriological and hygienic quality of the raw milk. Twenty percent of the farms in the district were characterized, covering aspects related mainly to the milking and hygienic management. The bacteria and somatic cell content of raw milk coming directly from the udder and from churns (first at the end of the milking and second few hours after milking), were monitorized for a period of nine months in 14 farms. Besides all the farms hold general sanitary norms, most of them do not carry out the general dairy herd recommendations for milking routine. It is observed that most germ contamination in milk occurred in the hours after milking (from 46,000 up to 267,000 germ/ml), always below the maximum allowed.

The Politics Of Justice: Navigating The Waters Between Legal Efficacy And Racial Profiling In The State Of Maine

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the issue and causal factors of racial disparity in Maine’s contemporary penal system. More pointedly, this thesis examines the ways in which contemporary Maine society functions to procure the causal factors responsible for conditioning racial minorities as “criminalized” populations, thus stimulating overrepresentation in the criminal justice system. This thesis focuses on Native American populations in the state of Maine and the historical, socio-economic, political, and legal ways in which the state has interacted with and subsequently disenfranchised them. Through a comparative examination of the work of legal scholar Michelle Alexander, the well-established argument of the American racial caste system as it pertains to black minorities is considered and redefined to fit a Mainespecific, Native American-specific context. A theoretical analysis is constructed using the work of Michele Foucault to typify Maine’s criminal justice system and the social structures that support it as belonging to a system of incumbent power and privilege for white citizens. Collectively, this thesis relies on data collected with the permission and assistance of the Maine Department of Corrections in examining and explaining the extent and causality of racial disparity in Maine prisons from complimentary empirical and theoretical perspectives

Assessment of bladder pressure and discomfort symptoms: How do overactive bladder differ from interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome patients?

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: To better understand the sensation of bladder pressure and discomfort , and how they are similar or distinct from the pain and urgency symptoms in IC/BPS and OAB. METHODS: IC/BPS and OAB patients rated their bladder pain, pressure, discomfort, and urinary urgency on separate 0-10 numeric rating scales (NRS). Their NRS ratings were compared between IC/BPS and OAB, and Pearson correlations were performed. RESULTS: Among IC/BPS patients (n = 27), their mean numeric ratings of pain, pressure, discomfort, and urinary urgency were almost identical (6.6 ± 2.1, 6.0 ± 2.5, 6.5 ± 2.2, and 6.0 ± 2.8 respectively). The three-way correlations between pain, pressure, or discomfort were very strong (all \u3e 0.77). Among OAB patients (n = 51), their mean numeric ratings of pain, pressure, and discomfort (2.0 ± 2.6, 3.4 ± 2.9, 3.4 ± 2.9) were significantly lower than urgency (6.1 ± 2.6, p \u3c 0.001). The correlations between urgency and pain, and between urgency and pressure were weak in OAB (0.21 and 0.26). The correlation between urgency and discomfort was moderate in OAB (0.45). The most bothersome symptom of IC/BPS was bladder/pubic pain, while the most bothersome symptom of OAB was urinary urgency and daytime frequency. CONCLUSIONS: IC/BPS patients interpreted bladder pain, pressure, or discomfort as the similar concepts and rated their intensity similarly. It is unclear whether pressure or discomfort provide additional information beyond pain in IC/BPS. Discomfort may also be confused with urgency in OAB. We should re-examine the descriptors pressure or discomfort in the IC/BPS case definition
