Property rights and innovation dynamism: the role of women inventors

    Get PDF
How do stronger property rights for disadvantaged groups affect innovation? I investigate the impact of strengthened property rights for women on U.S. innovation by analyzing the Married Women's Property Acts, which granted equal property rights to women starting in 1845 in New York State. I examine the universe of granted patents from 1790 until 1901, exploiting the staggered adoption of the laws over time across states. The strengthening of women's property rights led to a 40% increase in patenting activity among women in the long run, with effects peaking about a decade after the laws were introduced. Importantly, women's innovations were not of lower quality (as measured by a novelty index based on patent text analysis) and did not generate negative effects on male innovation. Finally, I show that the main mechanism was through higher human capital accumulation among women inventors and innovation incentives, rather than an increase in participation in STEM fields, labor force participation, or relieving financial frictions

The Impact of Positive Psychological Capital on Organizational Cynicism

    Get PDF
The concept of Positive Psychological Capital has started to possess an important role in the literature by the beginning of the 1990s, and many researches regarding this field have been conducted heavily throughout the 2000s. Positive psychological capital focuses on identifying people's strengths and their results personally and on an organizational level, and how it contributes to achieving the desired organizational success. As Individuals and organizations determine success/high performance or revenues as goals to be achieved, a lot of intense effort must be made to prepare a suitable environment in order to overcome challenges and problems. Since the 1980s, an approach called "cynicism" developed among an organization’s employees has started to attract attention in the business world.  Therefore, the concept of positive psychological capital is thought to be the best alternative to reduce the negative outcomes of cynicism in organizations in order to have a healthier work environment for better positive outcomes. In this respect, the aim of this article is to understand how Positive Psychological Capital impacts organizational cynicism throughout reviewing the literature since the 2000s

    Get PDF
In this paper, we investigate the stability of the zero solution of an integro-differential equation of the second order with variable delay. By means of the fixed point theory and an exponential weighted metric, we find sufficient conditions under which the zero solution of the equation considered is stable

Contemporary urologic minilaparoscopy : indications, techniques, and surgical outcomes in a multi-institutional European cohort

OBJECTIVES: To provide an analytical overview of contemporary indications, techniques, and outcomes of urologic minilaparoscopy (ML) in multiple European centers. METHODS: Data of patients who had undergone a minilaparoscopic urologic procedure at nine European institutions between 2009 and 2012 were retrospectively gathered. Surgical procedures were classified as upper or lower urinary tract and as ablative or extirpative and reconstructive. The main surgical outcome parameters were analyzed and relevant operative data related to the surgical technique were recorded. RESULTS: Overall, 192 patients (mean age 45.25±17.8 years) were included in the analysis. Most of them were nonobese (mean body mass index [BMI] 24.7±3.6?kg/m(2)) at low estimated surgical risk (mean American Society of Anesthesiologists [ASA] 1.69±0.68). Indications for surgery were mostly nononcologic (132 cases, 68.8%). Most of the procedures were done in the upper urinary tract (133 cases, 69.2%) and were mostly with a reconstructive intent (109 cases, 56.7%). Overall operative time was 132.7±52.3 minutes with an estimated blood loss of 60.9±47.6?mL while the mean hospital stay was 5±2.1 days. Most of the postoperative complications were low Clavien grade (1 and 2), with only one (0.5%) grade 3 and one (0.5%) grade 4 complications recorded. CONCLUSIONS: A broad range of common procedures can be safely and effectively performed with ML techniques. By duplicating the principles of standard laparoscopy, but potentially offering less surgical scar and trauma, ML can be regarded as a viable option when looking for a virtually "scarless" surgery

Renewable Energy Support Mechanism in Turkey: Financial Analysis and Recommendations to Policymakers

    Get PDF
The Turkish Grand National Parliament passed a renewable energy promotion law that provides feed-in tariffs for electricity generation from renewable energy sources in 2005. This law was not attractive to investors due to the low level of feed-in tariffs. Then, in 2011, the promotion law was amended and a new support scheme integrated in the day-ahead market was introduced. Therefore, the main purpose of this article is to explain the new support mechanism, analyze it from the financial perspective, and discuss the related key issues and challenges. In addition, to further improve the support mechanism, some recommendations have been made to policymakers. Keywords: Feed-in tariff; RES support scheme; Turkish electricity market Jel Classifications: E6; G39; H2; Q4

Ankara : Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design and the Institute of Economics and Social Sciences of Bilkent University, 1999.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 1999.Includes bibliographical references leaves 105-109This thesis discusses the supportive role of color, form, and size in the recreational spaces in public complexes. The basic concepts, and the relationship of color, form, and size is presented. Human responses and semiotics of color, form, and size is studied with the perception, symbolic interpretation, and psychological responses. Application of color, form and size in the interior spaces are discussed and the roles of those features are analyzed by defining the space. The definition of the recreation is presented with its significance in human life and changes in its character. Public space is defined and the emergence of public complexes is introduced. The role of recreation on public complexes is discussed with its commercial, social, and psychological features. A field research is conducted to test whether there is a difference in the preference of color form and size for different activities and for different sexes in recreational spaces in public complexes, among 100 subjects in the Bilkent University dormitories.Gozen, GünerM.S

Resonance Suppression in Multi-Degree-of-Freedom Rotating Flexible Structures Using Order-Tuned Absorbers

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper considers the dynamic response and order-tuning of vibration absorbers fitted to a rotating flexible structure under traveling wave (TW) engine order excitation. Of specific interest is the extension of previous results on the so-called no-resonance zone, that is, a region in linear tuning parameter space in which the coupled structure/absorber system does not experience resonance over all rotation speeds. The no-resonance feature was shown to exist for cyclic rotating structures with one structural and one absorber degree-of-freedom (DOF) per sector. This work uses a higher-fidelity structural model to investigate the effects of higher modes on the cyclically-coupled system. It is shown that the no-resonance zone is replaced by a resonance-suppression zone in which one structural mode is suppressed, but higher-order resonances still exist with the addition of the absorbers. The results are general, in the sense that one vibration mode can be eliminated using a set of identically-tuned ab-sorbers on a rotating structure with arbitrarily many DOFs per sector

Morphologic and molecular assessments of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) landraces

    Get PDF
In this study, 90 locally grown cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) landraces were collected and morphologically characterized using 20 descriptors derived from UPOV (International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants). Genetic diversity and relationships of the genotypes were revealed using 20 sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) marker combinations. The discrimination power of each polymorphic marker (estimated by the polymorphism information content) ranged from 0.15 to 0.99 with an average of 0.73. Dice's similarity coefficient ranged between 0.00-1.00. The cluster analysis that was conducted using the unweighted pair group method of arithmetic averages (UPGMA) for both molecular and morphologic data showed that all of the genotypes fell into two main groups and many subdivisions. According to morphological data, fruit length, diameter and weight of the genotypes were determined between 6.5 - 32.5 cm, 25 - 52 mm and, 28 - 625 g respectively. It is clear from the results, a moderate level of genetic diversity, which has the potential for broadening the genetic base, was observed among the Turkish cucumber landraces

PENGEMBANGAN WEBSITE KONTEN VISUAL DAN DISKUSI SEBAGAI SARANA PERTUKARAN IDE HASIL KARYA GENERATIVE IMAGE

    Get PDF
