Investigations of a turbulent jet in a crossflow

    Get PDF
Analyses of flow field downstream of jet directed at right angles into crossflow for heated and unheated single jets are presented. Application of flow data to cooling system for gas turbine combustion chambers is discussed. Temperature distribution, velocity trajectory, and vortex motion are described

A measure for the chirality of triangles

A measure for the description of the chirality of triangles is introduced. The measure XδX\delta is zero for triangles with at least one mirror axe, i.e. equilateral or isosceles triangles, and positive or negative for scalane, i.e. left or right handed triangles, respectively

Comment on "Potential Energy Landscape for Hot Electrons in Periodically Nanostructured Graphene"

In a recent letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 (2010) 036804] the unoccupied electronic states of single layers of graphene on ruthenium are investigated. Here we comment on the interpretation, which deviates in four points from [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 22 (2010) 302001] and outline the corresponding consequences

The entrainment rate for a row of turbulent jets

    Get PDF
Entrainment rates for a row of isothermal circular air jets issuing into a quiescent environment are found by integrating velocity distributions measured by a linearized hot-wire anemometer. Jet spacing to jet diameter ratios of 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 are studied at jet Reynold's numbers ranging from 5110 to 12070. Velocity distributions are determined at regular downstream intervals at axial distances equal to 16.4 to 164 jet diameters from the jet source. The entrainment rates for the four spacing configurations vary monotonically with increasing spacing/diameter between the limiting case of the slot jet entrainment rate (where the jet spacing to diameter ratio is zero) and the circular jet entrainment rate (in which the spacing to diameter ratio is infinity)

Rocking motion induced charging of C60 on h-BN/Ni(111)

One monolayer of C60 on one monolayer of hexagonal boron nitride on nickel is investigated by photoemission. Between 150 and 250 K the work function decreases and the binding energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) increases by approx. 100 meV. In parallel, the occupancy of the, in the cold state almost empty, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) changes by 0.4 electrons. This charge redistribution is triggered by onset of molecular rocking motion, i.e. by orientation dependent tunneling between the LUMO of C60 and the substrate. The magnitude of the charge transfer is large and cannot be explained within a single particle picture. It is proposed to involve electron-phonon coupling where C60- polaron formation leads to electron self-trapping.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

Dilution Jet Experiments in Compact Combustor Configurations

    Get PDF
The effects of cooling jets on the velocity and temperature fields in a compact reverse flow combustion are discussed. The work is motivated by the need to limit the temperature of past-combustion gases in jet engines to values within the endurance capabilities of turbine blades. The application requires not only that the temperature be kept sufficiently low but also that a suitably tailored temperature profile be provided at the combustor exit, with higher temperatures generally permissible at the blade tip than at the blade root because of higher centrifugal loads at the root. A single jet. As spacing is reduced, jet penetration is also reduced, and the cooling jets tend to remain close to the wall from which they are injected. Results suggest that cooling and temperature distribution tailoring can be accomplished without injecting cooling jets upstream of the turn, and thus it appears that combustors can be made smaller than current designs
