Searches for Higgs Boson(s) at the Upgraded Tevatron

We summarize the status of Higgs boson searches at the upgraded Fermilab Tevatron performed by the DO and CDF collaborations. We report on three categories of searches, namely 1) the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson (p\bar{p} --> H, WH or ZH, with H --> WW* and/or H --> b\bar{b}), 2) the search for the minimal supersymmetric Higgs boson using p\bar{p} --> hb\bar{b} --> b\bar{b}b\bar{b} and p\bar{p} --> hX --> tau tau X, 3) the search for doubly charged Higgs boson.Comment: 10 pages, Moriond Electroweak 2005 conference proceeding

    Ultimate Polynomial Time

The class UP\mathcal{UP} of `ultimate polynomial time' problems over C\mathbb C is introduced; it contains the class P\mathcal P of polynomial time problems over C\mathbb C. The τ\tau-Conjecture for polynomials implies that UP\mathcal{UP} does not contain the class of non-deterministic polynomial time problems definable without constants over C\mathbb C. This latest statement implies that PNP\mathcal P \ne \mathcal{NP} over C\mathbb C. A notion of `ultimate complexity' of a problem is suggested. It provides lower bounds for the complexity of structured problems

H1 Results in Deep Inelastic Scattering

Recent deep inelastic results from the H1 collaboration are presented. The topics covered include inclusive diffractive physics, the determination of alpha_S using the event shapes, the study of the hadronic final state at low x with single particles and with jets, the structure function measurements in particular F_2 at low Q^2 and the high Q^2 physics both in neutral and charged current.Comment: H1 plenary talk at the Chicago 5th DIS and QCD workshop. Bohr's way to defining complementarity

We go through Bohr's talk about complementary features of quantum theory at the Volta Conference in September 1927, by collating a manuscript that Bohr wrote in Como with the unpublished stenographic report of his talk. We conclude - also with the help of some unpublished letters - that Bohr gave a very concise speech in September. The formulation of his ideas became fully developed only between the fifth Solvay Conference, in Brussels in October, and early 1928. The unpublished stenographic reports of the Solvay Conference suggest that we reconsider the role that discussions with his colleagues possibly had on Bohr's final presentation of the complementary sides of atomic physics in his 1928 papers.Comment: Substantial revision. A new paragraph - no. 8 - has been added and the Conclusions rewritte

    The Mexican pension annuity market

This paper analyzes the performance and development of the Mexican pension annuity market established as a consequence of the 1997 pension reform. The Mexican experience displays interesting characteristics providing lessons for other countries that still need to design the decumulation phase of their newly established second pillars. At the same, time it raises some technical and policy concerns that need addressing as they could hamper, in the future, the healthy development of the market. The paper concludes that: 1) general life insurance companies may better hedge longevity risk than specialized annuity companies; 2) competition should be based on prices rather than additional products; 3) better disclosure of options under the 1973 and 1997 social security laws should be given to disability and life annuitants; and 4) various measures should be taken to improve asset liability management including allowing companies to trade over the counter derivatives and substituting over time the regulatory asset liability management framework with an economic asset liability management framework.Insurance&Risk Mitigation,Markets and Market Access,Economic Theory&Research,Non Bank Financial Institutions,Pensions&Retirement Systems
