    Cooling due to collisions between hydrogen molecules and helium atoms

    This study concerns the cooling that occurs in molecular clouds. The contribution to the cooling in these clouds by collisions between hydrogen molecules and helium atoms was investigated. The semi-classical method was used to calculate the rate coefficients for all He-induced H2 ro-vibrational transitions, and these were compared with previous quantum mechanical calculations. The steady state ro-vibrational level populations were found and used to compute the cooling function over a range of temperatures and densities. The time required to reach steady state is discussed, and a comparison is made of the results to corresponding values in thermodynamic equilibrium. The cooling function is compared to a previous quantum mechanical calculation. The suitability of the semi-classical method is discussed

Please consult print copy in Library.This thesis is a case study of the development of the National Cervical Screening Programme policy. The aim of the study was to identify and describe the political, social and ideological factors which may have influenced the National Cervical Screening Programme policy. The policy-makers included community or consumer participants as well as professionals. This relatively unique feature of community involvement was also a focus of study. The study involved a literature search and review as well as interviews with key informants. Cervical screening on a population basis was trialled as far back as the 1960s at the same time that Professor Green was questioning the efficacy of early treatment of cervical abnormalities. Green's controversial research resulted in a Royal Commission of Inquiry which recommended the establishment of a population based national cervical screening programme. The political, social and ideological context in which the National Cervical Screening programme policy was developed is described and interpreted. It is concluded that the National Cervical Screening Programme policy was adopted by the Government as a means to ameliorate the crisis of legitimation which was evident during the 1980s. It is further concluded that community or consumer participation in policy development is a highly complex issue requiring further study. Consumer representation is particularly problematic as consumer policy-makers require considerable skills, the acquisition of which may cause them to become less representative of the public whose voice they are intended to be

    Ocean color algorithm for remote sensing of chlorophyll

    An algorithm for the remote detection of chlorophyll a in the ocean was tested during a Nantucket Shoals experiment conducted by NASA. A set of Multichannel Ocean Color Sensor (MOCS) data selected from one flight for each of the two altitudes flown was used to calibrate the algorithm for chlorophyll a concentration. The equations were then applied to all unsaturated MOCS data collected during the 8-day experiment to generate contour maps of chlorophyll a concentration over the shoals. One additional flight was conducted away from the shoals both on and off the Continental Shelf. Although no solar elevation or environmental corrections were made to the original conversions, the equations in these tests determined chlorophyll a concentrations to an accuracy better than 1.0 micron g/L despite the fact that the solar elevation varied between 20 deg and 56 deg during the data collection periods of the experiments

    This conference analysed the creative process of styling – the purposeful construction of a ‘look’ –whether it be in dress, space, or object. In his theoretical writings on fashion, Roland Barthes underscored the complexities of how style is consciously constructed, for example observing that dandyism manifested in the careful selection and combination of particular sartorial items and conventions, with a keen attention to detail; that it was ‘not only an ethos… but also a technique.’ Today we might call this process ‘styling’, and those who engage in the practice professionally, or personally, ‘stylists’. In contemporary visual culture, the professional Stylist is familiar largely within fashion, but can also be found in other design fields such as architecture, interiors, product design, film, journalism, and commercial photography. The Stylist is perhaps an overlooked creative figure, although many artists and designers have themselves been Stylists of a sort in their own practice. Yet the act of styling as a form of creative production has had extremely limited discussion. The ultimate goal of the conference was to gain a more nuanced and interdisciplinary understanding of styling, problematizing accepted views of the creative acts that lie at the heart of artistic production. Key questions to be explored included: Can styling itself be considered a mode of creative process and practice? Can we employ styling as a theory to re-examine and unpack complicated issues surrounding the identities we construct through our clothes, homes, offices, and even personal effects? How does styling differ between creative disciplines? To what extent is identity performed through the act of styling? How do issues such as class, gender, geography and national identity affect styling

    The White-Eyed Blowout fracture in the child: beware of distractions

    Inferior ‘trapdoor’ orbital floor fractures with muscle and soft tissue incarceration are the most common type of orbital fracture in children. Delays to treatment can lead to a significant morbidity. It has been recommended that children who present with a ‘white-eyed blowout’ fracture should have surgery performed within 48 h of diagnosis, otherwise prognosis is poor. A 14-year-old boy was initially misdiagnosed with a head injury due to the minor appearance of his orbital injury and his presenting complaint of nausea and vomiting. This resulted in a significant delay to surgery. The oculovagal reflex associated with orbital injuries is well documented (Wei and Durairaj in Pediatric orbital floor fractures. J AAPOS 2011;15:173–80). It should be considered by emergency department and paediatric staff when dealing with patients who have sustained a blow to the orbital region, despite not having a subconjunctival haemorrhage. The importance of examination to detect other features of orbital blow-out and entrapment are stressed

    Segregation of an intruder in a heated granular dense gas

    A recent segregation criterion [V. Garz\'o, Phys. Rev. E \textbf{78}, 020301(R) (2008)] based on the thermal diffusion factor Λ\Lambda of an intruder in a heated granular gas described by the inelastic Enskog equation is revisited. The sign of Λ\Lambda provides a criterion for the transition between the Brazil-nut effect (BNE) and the reverse Brazil-nut effect (RBNE). The present theory incorporates two extra ingredients not accounted for by the previous theoretical attempt. First, the theory is based upon the second Sonine approximation to the transport coefficients of the mass flux of intruder. Second, the dependence of the temperature ratio (intruder temperature over that of the host granular gas) on the solid volume fraction is taken into account in the first and second Sonine approximations. In order to check the accuracy of the Sonine approximation considered, the Enskog equation is also numerically solved by means of the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method to get the kinetic diffusion coefficient D0D_0. The comparison between theory and simulation shows that the second Sonine approximation to D0D_0 yields an improvement over the first Sonine approximation when the intruder is lighter than the gas particles in the range of large inelasticity. With respect to the form of the phase diagrams for the BNE/RBNE transition, the kinetic theory results for the factor Λ\Lambda indicate that while the form of these diagrams depends sensitively on the order of the Sonine approximation considered when gravity is absent, no significant differences between both Sonine solutions appear in the opposite limit (gravity dominates the thermal gradient). In the former case (no gravity), the first Sonine approximation overestimates both the RBNE region and the influence of dissipation on thermal diffusion segregation.Comment: 9 figures; to be published in Phys.     Co-ordination of boron in sillimanite

    Ion-Microprobe analyses of six sillimanites associated with kornerupine show that the sillimanite can incorporate from 0.035 to 0.43 wt. % B_2O_3 (Grew and Hinthorne, 1983). Boron appears to substitute for silicon concomitantly with Mg substitution for Al such that the atomic Mg/B ratio is close to 0.5. This substitution results in a deficiency of cationic charge, which Grew and Hinthorne (1983) attributed to a submicroscopic rearrangement of the sillimanite structure involving loss of oxygen. A possible substitution scheme is 2(B + xMg) → 2(Si + xAl) + (1 + x)O, where x ≃ 0.5. In the present study, we have addressed the question of co-ordination of boron in sillimanite. As boron can occur in trigonal or tetrahedral coordination with oxygen, there is no compelling reason that B substitution for Si implies tetrahedral co-ordination for B
