The what and where of adding channel noise to the Hodgkin-Huxley equations
One of the most celebrated successes in computational biology is the
Hodgkin-Huxley framework for modeling electrically active cells. This
framework, expressed through a set of differential equations, synthesizes the
impact of ionic currents on a cell's voltage -- and the highly nonlinear impact
of that voltage back on the currents themselves -- into the rapid push and pull
of the action potential. Latter studies confirmed that these cellular dynamics
are orchestrated by individual ion channels, whose conformational changes
regulate the conductance of each ionic current. Thus, kinetic equations
familiar from physical chemistry are the natural setting for describing
conductances; for small-to-moderate numbers of channels, these will predict
fluctuations in conductances and stochasticity in the resulting action
potentials. At first glance, the kinetic equations provide a far more complex
(and higher-dimensional) description than the original Hodgkin-Huxley
equations. This has prompted more than a decade of efforts to capture channel
fluctuations with noise terms added to the Hodgkin-Huxley equations. Many of
these approaches, while intuitively appealing, produce quantitative errors when
compared to kinetic equations; others, as only very recently demonstrated, are
both accurate and relatively simple. We review what works, what doesn't, and
why, seeking to build a bridge to well-established results for the
deterministic Hodgkin-Huxley equations. As such, we hope that this review will
speed emerging studies of how channel noise modulates electrophysiological
dynamics and function. We supply user-friendly Matlab simulation code of these
stochastic versions of the Hodgkin-Huxley equations on the ModelDB website

In and around: identifying predictors of theft within and near to major mass underground transit systems
This article identifies factors that encourage or reduce pick-pocketing at underground rail stations through a case study analysis of the London Underground. Negative binomial Poisson regression models found predictor variables of pick-pocketing selected from the internal characteristics of stations and features of their nearby surroundings. Factors that increased risk were those associated with greater congestion inside stations including lifts, waiting rooms and fewer platforms; and increased levels of accessibility near stations, more paths and roads. Features that reduced risk were those likely to encourage detection and guardianship; stations with more personal validators, staffing levels and shop rentals; and the presence of more domestic buildings nearby. Station type was also influential; those that were ‘attractors’ of crime and those frequently used by tourists were at greater risk. The findings suggest a transmission of theft risk between the internal settings of underground stations and their nearby surroundings

DESCRIÇÃO DAS AÇÕES DE VIGILÂNCIA EM FOCOS DA DOENÇA DE AUJESZKY
Aujeszky’s disease (AD) is known for causing huge productive and economical losses in the swine industry. This study focused on describing the actions of the official animal health protection used on identification of AD outbreaks. Two outbreaks that occurred in Cerqueira César city were selected, a case presenting only seropositive animals (outbreak 1) and another one where there were animals with clinical signs of the disease (outbreak 2). The methods used to identify the outbreaks in surveillance actions and to diagnose the epidemiological situation were described. The measures implemented to eliminate the outbreaks in infected pig production systems were appointed in animal health protection laws and were able to eliminated all outbreaks identified. In conclusion, the official animal health protection measures and the appliance of the sanitary legislation were effective in eradicating AD, reassuring that notifications of suspicous cases of AD facilitate animal health surveillance activities
Effects of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) on exercise performance and body composition across varying levels of age, sex, and training experience: A review
The leucine metabolite beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) has been extensively used as an ergogenic aid; particularly among bodybuilders and strength/power athletes, who use it to promote exercise performance and skeletal muscle hypertrophy. While numerous studies have supported the efficacy of HMB in exercise and clinical conditions, there have been a number of conflicting results. Therefore, the first purpose of this paper will be to provide an in depth and objective analysis of HMB research. Special care is taken to present critical details of each study in an attempt to both examine the effectiveness of HMB as well as explain possible reasons for conflicting results seen in the literature. Within this analysis, moderator variables such as age, training experience, various states of muscle catabolism, and optimal dosages of HMB are discussed. The validity of dependent measurements, clustering of data, and a conflict of interest bias will also be analyzed. A second purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive discussion on possible mechanisms, which HMB may operate through. Currently, the most readily discussed mechanism has been attributed to HMB as a precursor to the rate limiting enzyme to cholesterol synthesis HMG-coenzyme A reductase. However, an increase in research has been directed towards possible proteolytic pathways HMB may operate through. Evidence from cachectic cancer studies suggests that HMB may inhibit the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway responsible for the specific degradation of intracellular proteins. HMB may also directly stimulate protein synthesis, through an mTOR dependent mechanism. Finally, special care has been taken to provide future research implications
