    Current Trends on MA Translation Courses in the UK: Changing Assessment Practices on Core Translation Modules

    Assessment underpins all forms of translator training and is an essential element of any teaching and learning process. By looking at university assessment practices, we can gain an insight into current understandings about the nature of translation practice and what issues are foregrounded in translator education. This paper presents the findings of the second stage of our research into assessment practices on core translation modules of MA Translation courses offered in the UK, and follows on from a preliminary case study conducted at the University of Westminster in 2015 and 2016 with MA Translation tutors and students (n=16; n=53). The research presented in this paper was carried out via documentary research into all universities offering MA Translation courses (n=27) and via a survey which asked a representative of each UK university to fill out a questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by 55% of universities (n=15). The areas explored include universities' learning outcomes, assessment instruments and criteria. In the light of the data gathered, our study aims to discover if and to what extent current assessment practices on the core translation modules reflect the competence-based understandings of the translation process and have adopted new forms of assessment

    Meta-Analysis of Calcineurin-Inhibitor-Sparing Regimens in Kidney Transplantation.

    Calcineurin-inhibitor-sparing strategies in kidney transplantation may spare patients the adverse effects of these drugs, but the efficacy of these strategies is unknown. Here, we conduct a meta-analysis to assess outcomes associated with reducing calcineurin inhibitor exposure from the time of transplantation. We search Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials for randomized controlled trials published between 1966 and 2010 that compared de novo calcineurin-inhibitor-sparing regimens to calcineurin-inhibitor-based regimens. In this analysis, we include 56 studies comprising data from 11337 renal transplant recipients. Use of the contemporary agents belatacept or tofacitinib, in combination with mycophenolate, decreased the odds of overall graft failure (OR 0.61; 95% CI 0.39–0.96; P = 0.03). Similarly, minimization of calcineurin inhibitors in combination with various induction and adjunctive agents reduces the odds of graft failure (OR 0.73; 95% CI 0.58–0.92; P = 0.009). Conversely, the use of inhibitors of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), in combination with mycophenolate, increases the odds of graft failure (OR 1.43; 95% CI 1.08–1.90; P = 0.01). Calcineurin-inhibitor-sparing strategies are associated with less delayed graft function (OR 0.89; 95% CI 0.80–0.98; P = 0.02), improved graft function, and less new-onset diabetes. The more contemporary protocols did not seem to increase rates of acute rejection. In conclusion, this meta-analysis suggests that reducing exposure to calcineurin inhibitors immediately after kidney transplantation may improve clinical outcomes

    Translation process research in audiovisual translation

    The last thirty years have witnessed a steady increase in the pursuit and status of translation process research (TPR) and of audiovisual translation (AVT) research in translation studies. This chapter explores past, present and potential future intersections between the two fields. Distinguishing between TPR in AVT reception studies and research focussed on the processes of AV translators as they work, including applied didactic studies directed at translator’s competence development, it considers the historical and theoretical foundations of TPR in AVT research and the current underdeveloped state of TPR in the context of AVT. Based on evidence that AVT researchers are beginning to move from an exclusive focus on AVT products and their reception to one that encompasses the processes of production and those actually doing the translations, the chapter concludes by sketching out future prospects for more extensive interfaces within the framework of an incipient cognitive audiovisual translatology
