Measuring the Hubble Constant with the Hubble Space Telescope
Ten years ago our team completed the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project on
the extragalactic distance scale. Cepheids were detected in some 25 galaxies
and used to calibrate four secondary distance indicators that reach out into
the expansion field beyond the noise of galaxy peculiar velocities. The result
was H_0 = 72 +/- 8 km/sec/Mpc and put an end to galaxy distances uncertain by a
factor of two. This work has been awarded the Gruber Prize in Cosmology for

Crystal structure of Hop2-Mnd1 and mechanistic insights into its role in meiotic recombination
In meiotic DNA recombination, the Hop2-Mnd1 complex promotes Dmc1-mediated single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) invasion into homologous chromosomes to form a synaptic complex by a yet-unclear mechanism. Here, the crystal structure of Hop2-Mnd1 reveals that it forms a curved rod-like structure consisting of three leucine zippers and two kinked junctions. One end of the rod is linked to two juxtaposed winged-helix domains, and the other end is capped by extra ?-helices to form a helical bundle-like structure. Deletion analysis shows that the helical bundle-like structure is sufficient for interacting with the Dmc1-ssDNA nucleofilament, and molecular modeling suggests that the curved rod could be accommodated into the helical groove of the nucleofilament. Remarkably, the winged-helix domains are juxtaposed at fixed relative orientation, and their binding to DNA is likely to perturb the base pairing according to molecular simulations. These findings allow us to propose a model explaining how Hop2-Mnd1 juxtaposes Dmc1-bound ssDNA with distorted recipient double-stranded DNA and thus facilitates strand invasion
On two Thomae-type transformations for hypergeometric series with integral parameter differences
We obtain two new Thomae-type transformations for hypergeometric series with r pairs of numeratorial and denominatorial parameters differing by positive integers. This is achieved by application of the so-called Beta integral method developed by Krattenthaler and Rao [Symposium on Symmetries in Science (ed. B. Gruber), Kluwer (2004)] to two recently obtained Euler-type transformations. Some special cases are given
On the adiabatic properties of a stochastic adiabatic wall: Evolution, stationary non-equilibrium, and equilibrium states
The time evolution of the adiabatic piston problem and the consequences of
its stochastic motion are investigated. The model is a one dimensional piston
of mass separating two ideal fluids made of point particles with mass . For infinite systems it is shown that the piston evolves very rapidly
toward a stationary nonequilibrium state with non zero average velocity even if
the pressures are equal but the temperatures different on both sides of the
piston. For finite system it is shown that the evolution takes place in two
stages: first the system evolves rather rapidly and adiabatically toward a
metastable state where the pressures are equal but the temperatures different;
then the evolution proceeds extremely slowly toward the equilibrium state where
both the pressures and the temperatures are equal. Numerical simulations of the
model are presented. The results of the microscopical approach, the
thermodynamical equations and the simulations are shown to be qualitatively in

Yet another puzzle? the relation between price and performance in the mutual fund industry
Gruber (1996) drew attention to the puzzle that investors buy actively-managed funds even though, on average, they underperform index funds. We uncover another puzzling fact about the market for actively-managed equity mutual funds: funds with worse before-fee performance charge higher fees. We then conduct a series of robustness checks and find that the apparently anomalous fee-performance relation survives all of them. Finally, we show that this relation may be explained as the outcome of strategic fee setting by mutual funds in the presence of investors with different degrees of sensitivity to performance
