Solving Large-Scale Optimization Problems Related to Bell's Theorem
Impossibility of finding local realistic models for quantum correlations due
to entanglement is an important fact in foundations of quantum physics, gaining
now new applications in quantum information theory. We present an in-depth
description of a method of testing the existence of such models, which involves
two levels of optimization: a higher-level non-linear task and a lower-level
linear programming (LP) task. The article compares the performances of the
existing implementation of the method, where the LPs are solved with the
simplex method, and our new implementation, where the LPs are solved with a
matrix-free interior point method. We describe in detail how the latter can be
applied to our problem, discuss the basic scenario and possible improvements
and how they impact on overall performance. Significant performance advantage
of the matrix-free interior point method over the simplex method is confirmed
by extensive computational results. The new method is able to solve problems
which are orders of magnitude larger. Consequently, the noise resistance of the
non-classicality of correlations of several types of quantum states, which has
never been computed before, can now be efficiently determined. An extensive set
of data in the form of tables and graphics is presented and discussed. The
article is intended for all audiences, no quantum-mechanical background is
necessary.Comment: 19 pages, 7 tables, 1 figur
Essential elements of work as subject to copyright protection. Some remarks 20 years after the adoption of the Act on Copyright and Related Rights in Poland
Artykuł w założeniu ma stanowić głos w dyskusji i punkt wyjścia do dalszych studiów nad tematem w kontekście poszukiwania rozwiązań problemu ustalania tzw. granicznego poziomu twórczości.This article focuses on the process of establishing and determining the essential elements of work as subject to copyright protection. This issue is considered as the most crucial challenge faced by the present day copyright law. When it comes to determining the creativity and individual character of a copyrightable work, an examination of judicial decisions and the theoretical analysis of the term ‘work’ only highlights the powerlessness of science and practice. The existing multitude of definitions of the object of copyright protection, especially relating to so called borderline cases, may be eliminated only after profound scientific research. The article emphasizes the potential benefits of expanding the research perspective by taking into account various fields of scientific study, including neuroaesthetics, and seeks to contribute to the discussion on the issue described above as well as to further research on the subject
Multipartite nonlocality and random measurements
We present an exhaustive numerical analysis of violations of local realism by
families of multipartite quantum states. As an indicator of nonclassicality we
employ the probability of violation for randomly sampled observables.
Surprisingly, it rapidly increases with the number of parties or settings and
even for relatively small values local realism is violated for almost all
observables. We have observed this effect to be typical in the sense that it
emerged for all investigated states including some with randomly drawn
coefficients. We also present the probability of violation as a witness of
genuine multipartite entanglement.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables, journal versio
Distinct amino acid compositional requirements for formation and maintenance of the [PSI+] prion in yeast
Multiple yeast prions have been identified that result from the structural conversion of proteins into a self-propagating amyloid form. Amyloid-based prion activity in yeast requires a series of discrete steps. First, the prion protein must form an amyloid nucleus that can recruit and structurally convert additional soluble proteins. Subsequently, maintenance of the prion during cell division requires fragmentation of these aggregates to create new heritable propagons. For the Saccharomyces cerevisiae prion protein Sup35, these different activities are encoded by different regions of the Sup35 prion domain. An N-terminal glutamine/asparagine-rich nucleation domain is required for nucleation and fiber growth, while an adjacent oligopeptide repeat domain is largely dispensable for prion nucleation and fiber growth but is required for chaperone-dependent prion maintenance. Although prion activity of glutamine/asparagine-rich proteins is predominantly determined by amino acid composition, the nucleation and oligopeptide repeat domains of Sup35 have distinct compositional requirements. Here, we quantitatively define these compositional requirements in vivo. We show that aromatic residues strongly promote both prion formation and chaperone-dependent prion maintenance. In contrast, nonaromatic hydrophobic residues strongly promote prion formation but inhibit prion propagation. These results provide insight into why some aggregation-prone proteins are unable to propagate as prions
Nonclassicality of pure two-qutrit entangled states
We report an exhaustive numerical analysis of violations of local realism by
two qutrits in all possible pure entangled states. In Bell type experiments we
allow any pairs of local unitary U(3) transformations to define the measurement
bases. Surprisingly, Schmidt rank-2 states, resembling pairs of maximally
entangled qubits, lead to the most noise-robust violations of local realism.
The phenomenon seems to be even more pronounced for four and five dimensional
systems, for which we tested a few interesting examples.Comment: 6 pages, journal versio
Fiber opticsensors for precursory acoustic signals detection in rockfall events
Two fiber optic sensors (FOSs) for detection of precursory acoustic emissions in rockfall events are addressed and experimentally characterized. Both sensors are based on interferometric schemes, with the first one consisting of a fiber coil used as sensing element and the second one exploiting a micro-machined cantilever carved on the top of a ferrule. Preliminary comparisons with standard piezo-electric transducers shows the viability of such FOSs for acoustic emission monitoring in rock masses
The Right to Attention in The Information Economy: A Tool To Protect Individuals Against Functional Illiteracy
In a technological reality increasingly dominated by screen devices, there has been a decline in peoples\u27 ability to use written and spoken language in a way that enables us to function effectively in society (functional illiteracy). Every seventh 15-year-old does not have sufficient reading skills and can only decode the text. From the perspective of education, one of the crucial causes of the threat of functional illiteracy are the significant distractions resulting from the improper use of screen devices. Thus, the modern economy, based on the exploitation of attention, appears to excessively strain individuals\u27 ability to concentrate, leading to a decline in cognitive autonomy and the growing problem of functional illiteracy. The aim of this article is to analyse the right to attention as a tool to protect individuals in the context of the impact of digital technologies on education and cognitive development. The article examines the relationship between the right to attention, mental integrity, educational challenges, and the necessity of regulating mechanisms within the information economy. The article highlights the particular harm that attention economy poses to vulnerable groups, especially children
Limits of (Im)Mortality - Reflections on the Right to Die in the Context of the Transhumanist Vision of the Future Human
Contemporary breakthrough discoveries of biological sciences and the ongoing technological revolution make the problem of the border of human life and the ways of its designing sound today in a completely new light. The aim of the paper is primarily to identify problems that arise on the legal grounds in connection with the latest discoveries of science. There is doubt as to whether dynamically developing social movements, such as transhumanism, do not require rethinking, in a completely new context, the right to death, subject to the huge complexity of this issue. The paper points out that in the light of immortality projects, there is the need to regulate the right to death in a manner significantly different from the already existing and still controversial approaches. The considerations carried out in the article are futurological and legal in nature, but it was mainly about a panoramic overview of legal problems related to biotechnological progress and projects of extending human life, including up to eternity.Contemporary breakthrough discoveries of biological sciences and the ongoing technological revolution make the problem of the border of human life and the ways of its designing sound today in a completely new light.
