The epidemiology of West Nile virus in Louisiana
West Nile virus (WNV), a member of the genus Flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes, first appeared in the New York in 1999. Within five years WNV was detected throughout the contiguous 48 states causing disease in reservoirs and accidental hosts alike. In Louisiana, WNV was first detected in 2001 with one human case, ten equine cases, and six dead birds reported. The introduction of WNV into Louisiana presented an unique opportunity to observe an emerging disease unfold, so a study was launched to gain insight into the epidemiology of WNV in Louisiana. The first component, an environmental predictive model for West Nile virus, was developed using geographic information systems and remote sensing in relationship to the prevalence of human cases and the percent of WNV positive dead birds by parish for 2002 and 2003. Linear regression analysis showed a 13 variable model with environmental and human factors for the 2003 human dataset to be the best model. This model was able to explain 74% of the variation in human WNV prevalence by parish. The results of the model along with one-way chi-square analysis of categorical variables indicated largely urban cycle when the mosquito-bird transmission cycle reaches high levels as the main mode of WNV transmission with spillover to humans, and other accidental hosts. A serosurvey of wild birds in East Baton Rouge Parish was conducted from November 2002 to October 2004. A total of 1287 samples were tested by the plaque reduction neutralization test. Overall, 222/1287 (17.25%; CI: 15.19-19.31) tested positive. Species, location, sex, age, and monthly differences were detected. The study identified Northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardninalis) as a statistically significant host for WNV in Louisiana. Mediterranean house geckos (Hemidactylus turcicus) were assessed as a potential reservoir for West Nile virus. Geckos were inoculated orally with West Nile virus and a field study was conducted to determine the prevalence of WNV in naturally infected geckos. Results obtained through virus culture and RT-PCR indicated that geckos could become infected with an oral inoculation of WNV, but that naturally infected geckos do not produce high enough viremias to act as a reservoir
Diving into the Depths of Consciousness and the Ocean
Freediving at its core is holding your breath underwater. But beneath the surface, the body, mind, and spirit undergo a transformation. The mammalian dive response drives the physiological changes that humans undergo while diving to conserve enough oxygen in the body for basic functions to continue to function. The autonomic nervous system synergistically influences the cardiac, pulmonary, and vascular systems and causes apnea, bradycardia, vasoconstriction and splenic emptying to sustain aerobic ATP production in the heart and brain. Additionally, the act of breath holding has many beneficial effects on the mind. Much research has been done on the positive effects of meditation and conscious breath control such as reduction in stress and help with mental health and cognition. Coordination between the breath and body can have positive effects on people’s emotional states and sense of self. Finally, many freedivers have reported having transcendent moments while freediving. Many traditions centered around the breath such as Buddhism, yoga, and Qi Gong also have religious ties. Conscious breathwork can deeply connect the individual simultaneously to the self and something beyond the self, facilitating transcendent experiences. Being immersed in nature is also conducive to experiencing moments of spirituality by connecting to the self and the universe. Freediving activates the mind, body and spirit; a freediver is not simply diving into the depth of the ocean but into themselves too
Hechizos y libros : Harry Potter y sus múltiples plataformas
Based on the evaluation of different devices and transactions that put the Harry Potter story in circulation, the article explores the notion of order of the books (Chartier, 1998), with the aim of tensioning elements that were incorporated into the field of editorial pro duction considering the mediatization processes. We used bibliographic research and documentary research, in a theoretical approach. We observed the preponderance of the verbal, which has a paradigmatic object in the book, which was rethought with the dissemination of other semiotic modalities enhanced by the expansion of the plot in multiplatform devices, as well as through editorial practices that incorporated new production methods and processes made possible by digital media. The Harry Potter at Home section of the Wizarding World website brings the book back to the center, resignifying its place in a media ecology that has been intensively transforming since the saga emerged.
This paper discusses the transformation of the practices of watching TV with digital media and the internet, with a focus on serial fictional narratives. In a scenario in which contents are detached from their traditional devices and accessed in different gadgets, we identify contemporary modalities of consumption of television shows and analyze and debate how they are reinvented, in an exploratory approach. To do so, we use bibliographical and documental research, as well as the data obtained regarding the consumption of TV series through an electronic questionnaire. We define what we understand by serial fictional narratives and briefly tell its history in relation to the different contexts of the North-American society. We then discuss how people make use of digital devices, (re)creating the practices of watching TV series. Finally, we debate the process of detachment of these programs from traditional programming and their insertion in multiple screens through two forms – piracy and paid streaming services, looking to identify current modalities of consuming TV series, analyzing and discussing how these are reinvented. It is observed that the content detaches itself from the television set and becomes portable, with the use of mobile devices, and endowed with a fluid temporality – it can be watched at any time, paused and continued at another moment. Practices reinvent themselves and renew themselves with time; and the creation of a new forms of enjoyment of television content does not mean the elimination of another: they coexist, articulating and influencing each other mutually
Voices & audiovisual : the Coronavirus crisis and the coverage of The Intercept Brasil on Instagram
The study uses as an empirical object the coverage of The Intercept Brasil about the Coronavirus published on Instagram stories in order to understand how different voices are incorporated into the audiovisual content that was produced. The corpus was composed of nine highlights on the Intercept’s profile, totaling 260 stories. Based on bibliographic research, the parameters of analysis were determined, and the documentary research guided the contextualization of the empirical object, in a qualitative approach. The narratives promote trust and credibility in what is told from the witness point of view that the subjective camera allows, taking the public around environments, permitting them to observe places and people, interact with subjects, constituting records of referenciality reinforced by direct sound. The editing features with the insertion of textual elements ensures the understanding of what goes on without the audio being activated. The presence of different contributions is in line with the editorial proposal of the vehicle and reveals characteristics such as horizontality, participation and user engagement. The stories are used to tell narratives, not just serving as a way to redirect to the site. The coverage gives visibility to realities that do not usually gain space in traditional business models and was driven to/on Instagram by the situation created by the pandemic and social isolation

Innovation in the newspaper Zero Hora (ZH) : the processes of journalistic convergence and the video department
The article has as empirical object the newspaper Zero Hora (ZH), published by Rede Brasil Sul de Comunicação (RBS). Based on the observation of the publication’s initiatives, focusing on the characterization and evaluation of the video department, we discuss the elements of innovation present in the processes of journalistic convergence. The methodological procedures adopted are bibliographical and documentary research and semi-structured interviews. We observed that economic aspects anchor the processes of innovation of ZH, mainly due to the strong technological investment, but also noticeable in the changes in the scope of professional culture and in the product multiplatform created, which is identified with the fifth generation of cyberjournalism. The creation of a new professional identity is noticed, in which the technical field overlaps with other values of recognition of the activity, related to the formation of new departments within the company and based on its values and goals
COVID-19: A One Health Issue
COVID-19 has very rapidly become part of modern societal lexicon as the disease highlights the importance understanding zoonotic diseases and the impact they can have on human life. With a 177million human cases and 3.82million deaths globally at the time of this publication, the One Health nature of the disease has had a lasting impact across the planet. As the disease spread rapidly, it highlighted the dissemination of information through social media and other sources. With this in mind, Dr. Gary Vroegindewey, Director for One Health at LMU-CVM, put forth the idea to have students collect and summarize information about COVID-19 and animal welfare. In April-May 2020, twenty LMU-CVM students, 2 non-CVM students, and a number of faculty were put into groups based on interest with 1-2 faculty mentors assigned to each group. The groups included: Legislation/Policy/Administration, Production Animals and Equine, Public Health and Zoonoses, Shelter/Companion Animal/Working Dog, and Zoo/Wildlife/Exotic/Laboratory Animal. Using Cloud based tools, students worked remotely to summarize the information for their topics. A Qualtrics database was created from the summarized information to examine informational trends. Here we provide an overall summary of the project and highlight some of the outcomes
Design editorial e publicação multiplataforma
The article identify, feature and discuss aspects that underlie the editorial design activity in contemporaneity considering the introduction of digital and network technologies, convergence processes and multiplatform publication. It is a theoretical and exploratory approach. The topics raised are related to investigations carried out under the Research Group Laboratório de Edição, Cultura e Design (Lead). It is concluded that as the digital design practice consolidates and breaks down into different layers. As computer field's knowledge becomes necessary to implement publications in digital platforms, there is a tension of knowledge and practices that lead to a redesign of professional and academia under the editorial production, particularly the design activity linked to the field.
