Redefining the boundaries of interplanetary coronal mass ejections from observations at the ecliptic plane
On 2015 January 6-7, an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) was
observed at L1. This event, which can be associated with a weak and slow
coronal mass ejection, allows us to discuss on the differences between the
boundaries of the magnetic cloud and the compositional boundaries. A fast
stream from a solar coronal hole surrounding this ICME offers a unique
opportunity to check the boundaries' process definition and to explain
differences between them. Using Wind and ACE data, we perform a complementary
analysis involving compositional, magnetic, and kinematic observations
providing relevant information regarding the evolution of the ICME as
travelling away from the Sun. We propose erosion, at least at the front
boundary of the ICME, as the main reason for the difference between the
boundaries, and compositional signatures as the most precise diagnostic tool
for the boundaries of ICMEs.Comment: 9 pages and 7 figures in the original forma
A Non-Perturbative Chiral Approach for Meson-Meson Interactions
A non-perturbative method which combines constraints from chiral symmetry
breaking and coupled channel unitarity is used to describe meson-meson
interactions up to \sqrt{s}\lesssim 1.2 GeV, extending in this way the range of
applicability of the information contained in Chiral Perturbation Theory (\chi
PT), since this perturbative series is typically restricted to \sqrt{s}\lesssim
500 MeV. The approach uses the O(p^2) and O(p^4) \chiPT Lagrangians. The seven
free parameters resulting from the O(p^4) Lagrangian are fitted to the
experimental data. The approach makes use of the expansion of T^{-1} instead of
the amplitude itself as done in \chiPT. The former expansion is suggested by
analogy with the effective range approximation in Quantum Mechanics and it
appears to be very useful. The results, in fact, are in good agreement with a

Supergranular-scale magnetic flux emergence beneath an unstable filament
Here we report evidence of a large solar filament eruption on 2013, September
29. This smooth eruption, which passed without any previous flare, formed after
a two-ribbon flare and a coronal mass ejection towards Earth. The coronal mass
ejection generated a moderate geomagnetic storm on 2013, October 2 with very
serious localized effects. The whole event passed unnoticed to flare-warning
systems.
We have conducted multi-wavelength analyses of the Solar Dynamics Observatory
through Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) and Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager
(HMI) data. The AIA data on 304, 193, 211, and 94 \AA sample the transition
region and the corona, respectively, while HMI provides photospheric
magnetograms, continuum, and linear polarization data, in addition to the fully
inverted data provided by HMI.

We have observed a supergranular-sized emergence close to a large filament in
the boundary of the active region NOAA11850. Filament dynamics and magnetogram
results suggest that the magnetic flux emergence takes place in the
photospheric level below the filament. Reconnection occurs underneath the
filament between the dipped lines that support the filament and the
supergranular emergence. The very smooth ascent is probably caused by this
emergence and torus instability may play a fundamental role, which is helped by

Spatiotemporal chaotic dynamics of solitons with internal structure in the presence of finite-width inhomogeneities
We present an analytical and numerical study of the Klein-Gordon kink-soliton
dynamics in inhomogeneous media. In particular, we study an external field that
is almost constant for the whole system but that changes its sign at the center
of coordinates and a localized impurity with finite-width. The soliton solution
of the Klein-Gordon-like equations is usually treated as a structureless
point-like particle. A richer dynamics is unveiled when the extended character
of the soliton is taken into account. We show that interesting spatiotemporal
phenomena appear when the structure of the soliton interacts with finite-width
inhomogeneities. We solve an inverse problem in order to have external
perturbations which are generic and topologically equivalent to well-known
bifurcation models and such that the stability problem can be solved exactly.
We also show the different quasiperiodic and chaotic motions the soliton
undergoes as a time-dependent force pumps energy into the traslational mode of
the kink and relate these dynamics with the excitation of the shape modes of

Development of Head Space Sorptive Extraction Method for the Determination of Volatile Compounds in Beer and Comparison with Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction
A headspace sorptive extraction method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HSSE-GC-MS) was developed for the determination of 37 volatile compounds in beer. After optimization of the extraction conditions, the best conditions for the analysis were stirring at 1000 rpm for 180 min, using an 8-mL sample with 25% NaCl. The analytical method provided excellent linearity values (R-2 > 0.99) for the calibration of all the compounds studied, with the detection and quantification limits obtained being low enough for the determination of the compounds in the beers studied. When studying the repeatability of the method, it proved to be quite accurate, since RSD% values lower than 20% were obtained for all the compounds. On the other hand, the recovery study was successfully concluded, resulting in acceptable values for most of the compounds (80-120%). The optimised method was successfully applied to real beer samples of different types (ale, lager, stout and wheat). Finally, an analytical comparison of the optimised HSSE method, with a previously developed and validated stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) method was performed, obtaining similar concentration values by both methods for most compounds
