Noise and diffusion of particles obeying asymmetric exclusion processes
The relation between noise and Fick's diffusion coefficient in barrier
limited transport associated with hopping or tunneling mechanisms of particles
obeying the asymmetric simple exclusion processes (ASEP) is physically assessed
by Monte Carlo simulations. For a closed ring consisting of a large number of
barriers the diffusion coefficient is related explicitly to the current noise
thus revealing the existence of a generalized Nyquist-Einstein relation. Both
diffusion and noise are confirmed to decrease as the square root of the number
of barriers as a consequence of the correlation induced by ASEP. By contrast,
for an open linear chain of barriers the diffusion coefficient is found to be
no longer related to current noise. Here diffusion depends on particle
concentration but is independent of the number of barriers

On the c-theorem in more than two dimensions
Several pieces of evidence have been recently brought up in favour of the
c-theorem in four and higher dimensions, but a solid proof is still lacking. We
present two basic results which could be useful for this search: i) the values
of the putative c-number for free field theories in any even dimension, which
illustrate some properties of this number; ii) the general form of three-point
function of the stress tensor in four dimensions, which shows some physical

WEIGHTBIT: An advancement in wearable technology
Wearable devices are becoming an important interface between users and fitness activities. Their capabilities are improving exponentially, and new strategies are being developed to track sports using sensors that are widely used in robotics. These wearable gadgets are normally created in conjunction with smartphone applications enabling the user to visualise the data and share it through social networks, or compete with other users. The technology behind these devices is often simple using sensors that can be found in a smartphone, such as GPS, accelerometer and gyroscope. However, there are currently no devices capable of measuring the gym activity of weight lifting. In this paper, we present WeightBit: a system consisting of technologically enhanced gym gloves, comprised of the aforementioned sensor’s as well as an additional weight sensor to detect weight and arm movements. Using this data in combination with a smartphone application, it will be possible to monitor a new series of sports activities with specific focus on weight training. Furthermore, the data collected by the application will enable broader research by medical researchers or institutions. The goal is to keep users focused and keen to live a healthy life, providing them a great tool to track their progress, and to develop a system that will allow medical institutions access to this data for further study
ATLAS RPC offline monitoring and data quality assessment
In this work several aspects of ATLAS RPC offline monitoring and data quality
assessment are illustrated with cosmics data selected by RPC trigger. These
correspond to trigger selection, front-end mapping, detection efficiency and
occupancy, which are studied in terms of low level quantities such as: RPC
off-line hits and standalone tracks. The tools and techniques presented are

Sustainable reuse of modern movement heritage buildings : problems and solutions in Scotland and Italy
Many buildings which were built in the 20th century, and due to their exceptional architectural value included in the lists of built heritage, are sometimes standing vacant for different reasons. This paper investigates the problems that need to be resolved to enable a sustainable reuse of various types of modern heritage buildings. The investigation is undertaken through case studies of some modern heritage buildings in Scotland and Italy in order to identify common problems and regional differences in enabling the reuse of those buildings. In addition, some examples of the reuse of modern built heritage are presented to highlight what has contributed to the reuse, and whether and how that meets the current environmental requirements, and the local social and economic needs. The research indicates how public and private organisations have contributed to the successful reuse of modern built heritage and what problems they encounter in the efforts to provide new uses for the remaining vacant buildings. The investigation examines how economic, social, environmental, functional, structural and design aspects impact on defining new uses for modern heritage buildings. The analysis of the above requirements through the selected case studies leads to the recommendations on the key issues, strategies and tactics that should be considered to enable an appropriate and timely reuse of the 20th century built heritage

Is type 2 diabetes really resolved after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy? Glucose variability studied by continuous glucose monitoring
The study was carried out on type 2 diabetic obese patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Patients underwent regular glycemic controls throughout 3 years and all patients were defined cured from diabetes according to conventional criteria defined as normalization of fasting glucose levels and glycated hemoglobin in absence of antidiabetic therapy. After 3 years of follow-up, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) was performed in each patient to better clarify the remission of diabetes. In this study, we found that the diabetes resolution after LSG occurred in 40% of patients; in the other 60%, even if they showed a normal fasting glycemia and A1c, patients spent a lot of time in hyperglycemia. During the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), we found that 2 h postload glucose determinations revealed overt diabetes only in a small group of patients and might be insufficient to exclude the diagnosis of diabetes in the other patients who spent a lot of time in hyperglycemia, even if they showed a normal glycemia (<140 mg/dL) at 120 minutes OGTT. These interesting data could help clinicians to better individualize patients in which diabetes is not resolved and who could need more attention in order to prevent chronic complications of diabetes
Critical renormalized coupling constants in the symmetric phase of the Ising models
Using a novel finite size scaling Monte Carlo method, we calculate the four,
six and eight point renormalized coupling constants defined at zero momentum in
the symmetric phase of the three dimensional Ising system. The results of the
2D Ising system that were directly measured are also reported. Our values of
the six and eight point coupling constants are significantly different from
those obtained from other methods.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Self-Averaging in the Three Dimensional Site Diluted Heisenberg Model at the critical point
We study the self-averaging properties of the three dimensional site diluted
Heisenberg model. The Harris criterion \cite{critharris} states that disorder
is irrelevant since the specific heat critical exponent of the pure model is
negative. According with some analytical approaches \cite{harris}, this implies
that the susceptibility should be self-averaging at the critical temperature
(). We have checked this theoretical prediction for a large range of
dilution (including strong dilution) at critically and we have found that the
introduction of scaling corrections is crucial in order to obtain
self-averageness in this model. Finally we have computed critical exponents and
cumulants which compare very well with those of the pure model supporting the
