    Self-scaled barrier functions on symmetric cones and their classification

    Self-scaled barrier functions on self-scaled cones were introduced through a set of axioms in 1994 by Y.E. Nesterov and M.J. Todd as a tool for the construction of long-step interior point algorithms. This paper provides firm foundation for these objects by exhibiting their symmetry properties, their intimate ties with the symmetry groups of their domains of definition, and subsequently their decomposition into irreducible parts and algebraic classification theory. In a first part we recall the characterisation of the family of self-scaled cones as the set of symmetric cones and develop a primal-dual symmetric viewpoint on self-scaled barriers, results that were first discovered by the second author. We then show in a short, simple proof that any pointed, convex cone decomposes into a direct sum of irreducible components in a unique way, a result which can also be of independent interest. We then show that any self-scaled barrier function decomposes in an essentially unique way into a direct sum of self-scaled barriers defined on the irreducible components of the underlying symmetric cone. Finally, we present a complete algebraic classification of self-scaled barrier functions using the correspondence between symmetric cones and Euclidean Jordan algebras.Comment: 17 page

    The reasons for proposing a London 2012 bid are outlined in the light of London city planning over the past sixty years. The processes influencing the bid for the London 2012 Olympics are investigated in respect of the lessons from Barcelona and Sydney. The role of environmental and landscape improvement is examined and the importance of legacy is described and analysed. The cost of Olympiads since Sydney 2000 are described and compared. Then progress of the London 2012 Olympics development is described relative to regeneration of East London. Finally the effects of current proposals to cut back the costs of the 2012 Olympics are considered. Olympic Games play significant roles in host city’s economy as well as other outcomes such as tourism, culture, unemployment, infrastructure. However the economy can never describe the whole picture of Olympic Games’ gainnings, it is one of the most significant sign before, during and after the event. All of the expenditures have different values at different legacy levels. Although post election budget cut-backs in the United Kingdom have placed a question mark on the costs; the proposed urban legacy make the city beautiful and London East End livable

    After two types of inflation uncertainty are derived within a time-varying parameter model with GARCH specification, the relationship between inflation uncertainty and interest rates for safe assets is investigated. The results support the existence of a ‘‘flight to quality’’ effect.

    Turbo-Aggregate: Breaking the Quadratic Aggregation Barrier in Secure Federated Learning

    Federated learning is a distributed framework for training machine learning models over the data residing at mobile devices, while protecting the privacy of individual users. A major bottleneck in scaling federated learning to a large number of users is the overhead of secure model aggregation across many users. In particular, the overhead of the state-of-the-art protocols for secure model aggregation grows quadratically with the number of users. In this paper, we propose the first secure aggregation framework, named Turbo-Aggregate, that in a network with NN users achieves a secure aggregation overhead of O(NlogN)O(N\log{N}), as opposed to O(N2)O(N^2), while tolerating up to a user dropout rate of 50%50\%. Turbo-Aggregate employs a multi-group circular strategy for efficient model aggregation, and leverages additive secret sharing and novel coding techniques for injecting aggregation redundancy in order to handle user dropouts while guaranteeing user privacy. We experimentally demonstrate that Turbo-Aggregate achieves a total running time that grows almost linear in the number of users, and provides up to 40×40\times speedup over the state-of-the-art protocols with up to N=200N=200 users. Our experiments also demonstrate the impact of model size and bandwidth on the performance of Turbo-Aggregate

    Acaciapollenites acaciae sp. nov., una nueva políade de mimosoidea del neógeno, en la Cuenca del Colorado, Argentina

    Fossil mimosoid polyads have been recently recovered from Neogene deposits in the Colorado Basin, Argentina, and the new species Acaciapollenites acaciae sp. nov. is described, which is closely similar to polyads of species included in Acacia Miller subgenus Acacia Vassal. It is characterized by colporate apertures on the distal face of the pollen grains, a typical polyad of the subgenus Acacia species. The new polyad species is very similar to those of the extant Acacia curvifructa Burkart. Comparing the habitat of subgenus Acacia extant species, the Acaciapollenites acaciae occurrence suggests drier and warmer paleoclimatic conditions than today for the Late Miocene-Early Pliocene in the Colorado Basin. Paleogeographic data of Acacia pollen diversity are discussed. A similar early diversification and distribution of Acacia genus is recognized for the new and old worldPolíades afines a Mimoisoideas fueron recuperadas de depósitos del Neógeno de la cuenca del Colorado, Argentina. Por sus detalles morfológicos es reconocida una nueva especie con afinidad botánica a las especies actuales del género Acacia, subgénero Acacia. Acaciapollenites acaciae sp. nov. se distingue por presentar aperturas colporadas sobre la superficie distal de sus granos de polen, políade típica de las especies del subgénero Acacia. La nueva especie de políade se compara con las de la especie actual Acacia curvifructa. Comparando el hábitat de las actuales especies del subgénero Acacia, la presencia de Acaciapollenites acaciae en el Neógeno de la cuenca del Colorado, sugiere condiciones paleoclimáticas mas áridas y cálidas que las de hoy día. Se discuten los datos paleogeográficos de la diversidad de Acacia.     Spatial Interference Detection for Mobile Visible Light Communication

    Taking advantage of the rolling shutter effect of CMOS cameras in smartphones is a common practice to increase the transfered data rate with visible light communication (VLC) without employing external equipment such as photodiodes. VLC can then be used as replacement of other marker based techniques for object identification for Augmented Reality and Ubiquitous computing applications. However, the rolling shutter effect only allows to transmit data over a single dimension, which considerably limits the available bandwidth. In this article we propose a new method exploiting spacial interference detection to enable parallel transmission and design a protocol that enables easy identification of interferences between two signals. By introducing a second dimension, we are not only able to significantly increase the available bandwidth, but also identify and isolate light sources in close proximity

    Importance and applications of robotic and autonomous systems (RAS) in railway maintenance sector: a review

    Maintenance, which is critical for safe, reliable, quality, and cost-effective service, plays a dominant role in the railway industry. Therefore, this paper examines the importance and applications of Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) in railway maintenance. More than 70 research publications, which are either in practice or under investigation describing RAS developments in the railway maintenance, are analysed. It has been found that the majority of RAS developed are for rolling-stock maintenance, followed by railway track maintenance. Further, it has been found that there is growing interest and demand for robotics and autonomous systems in the railway maintenance sector, which is largely due to the increased competition, rapid expansion and ever-increasing expense
