    Do neutrons publish? A neutron publication survey 2005-2015

    Publication in scientific journals is the main product of scientific research. The amount of papers published, their placement in high impact journals, and their citations are used as a measure of the productivity of individual scientists, institutes or fields of science. To give a profound basis on the publication record and the quality of the publication efforts in neutron scattering, a survey has been done following the approach to use bibliographic databases. Questions to be addressed by this survey are: Is the productivity of research with neutrons changing over the years? Which is the geographic distribution in this field of research? Which ones are leading facilities? Is the quality of publications changing? The main results found are presented

    Use of small angle neutron scattering to study the interaction of angiotensin II with model membranes

    Understanding biological processes assumes a detailed understanding of the interaction of all involved molecules. Here the effect of the peptide hormone angiotensin II (Ang II), an agonist of the angiotensin receptors, on the structure of unilamellar and multilamellar dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine vesicles was studied by small angle neutron scattering, dynamic light scattering and differential scanning calorimetry. The calorimetry data indicate a weak interaction of Ang II with the surface of the membrane bilayer, as the pretransition persists during all experiments, and the main transition is only slightly shifted towards higher temperatures. From the SANS data we were able to confirm the calorimetric data and verify the interaction of the hormone with the membrane surface. At low temperatures, when the lipid molecules are in the gel phase, more precisely in the ripple phase, the peptide penetrates in the head group core, but due to the close packing of the acyl chains, the hydrophobic region is not affected. In a temperature region below but close to the region of the phase transition, the hydrophibic core starts to be affected by the peptide, and the same is true for the fluid phase. Upon binding of the peptide, the thickness of the head group increases, and the scattering length density of the head group starts to rise with increasing peptide concentrations. This interaction and binding to the membrane surface may be relevant for the relocation, binding and reconstitution of the angiotensin receptors into the membrane.     Magnetic Proximity Effect in Perovskite Superconductor/Ferromagnet Multilayers

    YBa2Cu3O7/La2/3Ca1/3MnO3\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7/La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3} superconducting/ferromagnetic (SC/FM) multilayers have been studied by neutron reflectometry. Evidence for a characteristic difference between the structural and magnetic depth profiles is obtained from the occurrence of a structurally forbidden Bragg peak in the FM state. The comparison with simulated reflectivity curves allows us to identify two possible magnetization profiles: a sizable magnetic moment within the SC layer antiparallel to the one in the FM layer (inverse proximity effect), or a ``dead'' region in the FM layer with zero net magnetic moment. The former scenario is supported by an anomalous SC-induced enhancement of the off-specular reflection, which testifies to a strong mutual interaction of SC and FM order parameters.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PR

    Waste in the City: Challenges and Opportunities for Urban Agglomerations

    Worldwide cities are rapidly expanding, creating visible environmental and social challenges. The generation of waste is one of the central concerns in urban agglomerations, particularly in the global South, where inadequacies, absences and weaknesses shape the local waste management system. Uneven geographic development has created obvious spaces of exclusion and neglect. In response, informal and organized waste pickers engage in selective waste collection and recycling, serving their community and the environment. These contributions are still mostly unrecognized and unaccounted for. This chapter begins with emphasizing the challenges of urban growth, consumption, poverty and waste. In the global South, every day millions of informal waste pickers reclaim recyclables from household waste to earn their living. In doing so they make an important contribution to reducing the carbon footprint of cities, recovering resources, improving environmental conditions and health creating jobs and income among the poor, particularly in low-income residential areas. This chapter discusses the organization of these initiatives into networks and examines the challenges and benefits of such practices that promote grassroots resilience and contribute to reducing both the adverse impacts of cities on climate and environmental change (UN sustainable development target # 11.6) as well as urban poverty (Goal # 8)
