Rare hemoglobin variant Hb Yaizu observed in Turkey

Objective: To determine the characteristic features of the rare hemoglobin (Hb) variant Hb Yaizu to enable laboratory diagnosis of the hemoglobin variants during screening programs. Materials and Methods: Genomic DNA was obtained from the 4 members of a family living in Denizli province, an Aegean region of Turkey. Blood cell counts, hemoglobin composition, hemoglobin electrophoresis (both alkaline and acid), HPLC analysis, DNA sequencing and beta globin gene cluster haplotypes were done. Results: Hb Yaizu carriers were apparently healthy individuals. Hb Yaizu was slightly faster than Hb S at alkaline pH, but slower than Hb S at acidic pH in hemoglobin electrophoresis. An abnormal hemoglobin peak was observed with a retention time of 4.77 min in HPLC analysis attributed to Hb Yaizu. Two members of the family were heterozygous Hb Yaizu [beta 79(EF3) Asp>Asn] confirmed by DNA sequencing. The mutation was found to be linked with the Mediterranean haplotype I [+ - - ++]. Conclusion: We have presented the details of Hb Yaizu, a rare hemoglobin variant that may be important to hemoglobinopathy screening programs, although its clinical significance is unclear. Impacts of Remediation of Halogenated Organic Compounds in Soils and Sediments

Halogenated hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) have been used in various industrial applications and are present in many commercial products. Due to their emissions during manufacturing and discharges as wastes, halogenated HOCs such as polychlorinated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers are ubiquitously found in the environment and create contaminated sites. To remove the contamination from these sites, various remediation techniques have been useful. The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the impacts of traditional and emerging remediation techniques on ecosystem. One of the traditional remediation techniques is dredging and the mostly studied emerging remediation techniques are bioaugmentation and biostimulation. The efficiency of these techniques is also evaluated regarding reduction in contaminant mass. Overall, this chapter presents the efficiency and possible impacts of dredging, bioaugmentation and biostimulation of soils and sediments, and the implications include the evaluation of most feasible remediation techniques by using life cycle assessment. © 2020 by IGI Global. HLA-B51 gene and its expression in association with Behçet's Disease in Denizli Province of Turkey

Behçet's Disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory disorder as a triad of symptoms including recurrent oral and genital aphthous ulceration, and uveitis with unknown pathogenesis. Many researchers have tried to investigate the association of HLA-B51 gene with the BD. We aimed to investigate the association of the HLA-B51 gene and its expression, also polymorphic structure by PCR, RT-PCR and sequence specific oligonucleotide primers and probes in BD patients (n: 35) and control group (n: 50). According to our results, we did not observe any association in between HLA-B51 gene, its polymorphism, expression and BD patients. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V

Beta globin gene cluster haplotypes of abnormal hemoglobins observed in Turkey

Since the first observation of hemoglobin S (Hb S) in Turkey by Aksoy, the number of hemoglobin variants reported was increased. Beta globin gene cluster haplotypes are being used to determine the origin of the mutations under interest. We studied the beta globin gene cluster haplotypes for the six different abnormal hemoglobins which are Hb S, Hb D-Los Angeles, Hb G-Coushatta, Hb E, Hb E-Saskatoon and Hb J-Iran observed in Turkey. In this study, we report two novel haplotypes [- + + - - - +] and [- + - + + +] in association with the Hb G-Coushatta mutation. The haplotype for the Hb J-Iran is also reported as [- + - + + + +] for the first time in world populations from Turkey. © Turkish Society of Hematology

Influence of caregiver burden on well-being of familymember caregivers of older adults

    No full text
Background Caregiving to older adults is one of the most important social issues associated with aging. While caregiving provides a suitable care and supportive environment for older adults, changes in the lives of caregiving family members also affect their health. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of care burden on the well-being of family members providing care for older adults. Methods The study used a cross-sectional design. The study sample included 363 family caregivers of older adults. Socio-demographic questionnaire form, Burden Interview and Caregiver Well-Being Scale were used as data collection tools. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to explore the predictors of well-being in the family caregivers of older adults. Results The caregiver burden mean score was 32.63 +/- 15.72 and Caregiver Well-Being Mean score was 159.38 +/- 24.55. Caregiver burden, perceived health status of the older adults, marital status, perceived health status of caregiver and social support of caregiver were found to be statistically significant predictors of well-being in family member caregivers of older adults. Caregiver burden level was found to be the strongest predictor of well-being in the family caregivers of older adults. Conclusion Results showed that caregiver burden had an important effect on well-being of the caregiver. For this reason caregiver burden should be considered during interventions for improving well-being in family caregivers of older adults. Findings of our study revealed the necessity of showing special attention to caregivers by healthcare professionals and the importance of conducting interventional studies that aim to reduce caregiver burden in order to promote well-being.C1 [Or, Recep] Pamukkale Univ, Hlth Sci Inst, Dept Publ Hlth, Denizli, Turkey.[Kartal, Asiye] Pamukkale Univ, Fac Hlth Sci, Dept Publ Hlth Nursing, Kinikli Campus, Denizli, Turkey
